Why not Fedora?
It's nice
[editline]16th October 2013[/editline]
Yeah I skipped straight past Fedora, and chose Mint instead. Elementary looks real nice and sleek, but I'm done with the whole 'icons along the bottom' type thing, too similar to the MacBook I used to have. Just made a small 50GB partition and gonna install it onto that, pretty excited never having used Linux before and I can't wait to see how it compares. Not going for Unbuntu because I'm not a massive fan of how it looks, and Mint comes with a load of cool software pre-installed too which is handy for a first time user I suppose.
Don't forget to install the rpmfusion repos if you're using mint.

No matter how cool and hip and nice Fedora ever will be, it's just not suited for beginners right now. Even in the very stages it's gone through, it's still not a beginner distribution on the level that Mint and eOS are.

My first distro was fedora. It worked out fine for me. I dabbled around with ubuntu before that but I just didn't like it.
Finally got it installed (was struggling because I wasn't sure how to partition my hard drive, fixed it anyway), this came up for 5-10 minutes when it prompted a restart:

EDIT: Now been like this 20 or so minutes now. This normal?
Press enter
I did, told me to remove the media and then press enter, which I did. Now been like that telling me it's synchronising the SCSI cache since. I'm scared, hold me...
Should I upgrade to Ubuntu 13.10? I've managed okay with 12.04
Should I upgrade to Ubuntu 13.10? I've managed okay with 12.04
Depends. If 12.04 is going alright for you, you could just wait it out until 14.04, the next LTS release. I'd probably recommend upgrading though because you get quite a few performance optimizations and more up-to-date software.

Fuck yeah! Been using this for about an hour now and totally loving it. Don't know why I didn't do this any sooner to be honest.

I felt the same way when I started using xubuntu
[editline]16th October 2013[/editline]
By the way, your clock is an hour behind.
So I want to install Xubuntu. Is there a way to do it with out wiping my drive? I have Ubuntu 13.04 installed

I meant permanently. I don't want Ubuntu. I wanted Xubuntu instead and I already had it in a VM

Not really, no. Do you not have a backup drive of some sort?
Also, does anyone know why grub isn't loading on boot when I install Linux to my partitioned SSD? It doesn't make much sense.
also, could you guys here who is running KDE show off your desktops? kinda curious to see what people have done with that DE. considering to use it myself
just in case you're still curious

Well then this will be the THIRD time I have to wipe my hard drive clean in about a month
I never managed to fix this by myself and it's starting to get on my nerves. I have a palo alto firewall installed at home, and we've made it so we need a certificate to use the internet here. everything but https works. google, facebook etc doesn't work without that certificate. however, I can't import the certificate for whatever reason?

It's easy to install the Xubuntu components, but also equally hard to remove the Ubuntu specific components.
sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
You're on your own with removing Unity and friends.

force install, ignore dependencies.
but you wont be able to play many games, plus if steam crashes, id blame it on not using the recommended drivers.

got it working by choosing the third provider. one problem though, fonts aren't really working for me.

Doesn't catalyst-utils depend on the catalyst package? How are you using the open source driver?
[img_thumb]http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k55/lew-m-b06/Screenshotfrom2013-10-16223111_zps24179ea5.png[/img_thumb]

You can turn off those purple bubbles in the Ghostery settings.

I moved them to the lower left corner instead.
That way they're still visible, but not in the way.

no clue :v:

Yeah that was one of the first things I did. Had only just got on by that point and all my extensions were loading so I hadn't sorted it all out how I like it, but done now, thanks.
I swear to god, fuck spotify. for some reason it'll make my house hang until I terminate the app, why is that? I got it from the AUR
The joy of Catalyst on Linux.. Had to spend an half-hour of removing and installing an new Catalyst driver after the upgrade to Kubuntu 13.10 dumped me to low-graphics mode. And after upgrading to the new Catalyst driver (13.11 Beta) the game I'm working on keeps segfaulting with error 4 in fglrx_dri.so. Seems like they broke blendmaps/texture splatting in their latest drivers. Fun.
