If you don't have to play games, why not use the open source drivers? And even if you do, give 'em a shot if you haven't already.
I was surprised by the open source drivers 3d performance, they're worth a shot.
This is late but if you do lsattr and an i shows up that means the file is immutable and you can't edit it. (even if you're root)
You can use chattr to change it.
after having it for a couple hours I got sick of looking at conky and uninstalled it all together. :v:
since the spotify client is being really mean to me and slowing down my entire system, I decided to move back to clementine (gonna miss you, radio). problem is, I'm unable to log in with my spotify account through clementine for whatever reason. I press the login button, but nothing at all happens. running clementine through terminal doesn't give me any errors either when trying to log in. need dire help, need my music!
Visualization in NCMPCPP? Yes there is. You might have to compile it yourself to enable it, though, but mpd can use fifo outputs with ncmpcpp.

I got it from the debian repositories and virtualization works fine. You just have to configure some things. (enable fifo output in mpd, and pointing to the fifo file in ncmpcpp)
hi i'm installing linux mint 15 (cinnamon) using this method: http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/744
when i install inside windows, i get try hd 0,0 nstf5 after selecting it in the boot menu. i uninstalled it and am now trying the 'demo and full installation' option but since i don't have a cd i'm trying the "help me boot from cd" option and its currently doing things
i have no idea about linux so i'm trying to figure out if i am on the right track
Any Grub gurus out there?
I have Xubuntu 13.10 and Windows 8.1 installed, though I can only boot into Xubuntu from Grub. When I select the option to boot Windows, the screen goes black for a short moment and I get kicked back to the grub menu. I've tried boot-repair, though it doesn't fix the problem.
EDIT: Nevermind! I used the instructions here: http://superuser.com/questions/460762/how-can-i-repair-the-windows-8-efi-bootloader to rebuild my Windows 8 bootloader and the Windows option works. And so does the Xubuntu one! Now all I have to do is get the sound to work and I'll be good.
So how would one set up Xwayland under Arch Linux?

Not really a solution as such but you could always use http://play.spotify.com/ instead, the WebUI. You could always cancel Spotify and move to another service like Rd.io. Maybe try the WINE version and see if that's better? XBMC also has quite a nice unofficial implementation which might suit your needs.

my god, why haven't I thought of using XBMC before? I used sonata but this plugin is just beautiful, so now I have a beautiful music player as well as my spotify! thanks!
Can anyone help a brother out with Netflix? Using Mint, went through all the steps on this guide http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2084592 and I can see it in my application list. However when I click the icon my mouse shows the loading symbol, and then it just stops and nothing happens and I have no idea what it's doing. Can anyone help please?
Edit:
Nevermind, managed to fix it with a whole load of faffing around.
So yea...
I just got this sent to me on the /g/ Irc.

Is it bad I want to try that task management mode?
Would it be worth it to install Ubuntu 13.10 on my Windows 8 laptop, or should I use a different Linux variant?

I'd try out a couple of distro's in a vm first

no, mopidy doesn't support it.

It depends on your preferences. If you want a distro with batteries included get Ubuntu. It literally comes with pretty much anything you need. An office suite, image editor, image viewer, pdf viewer, firefox, movie player, file browser, terminal editor, pulseaudio server, banshee media player (basically itunes), a desktop environment with window manager, and much more.
Rather than selecting software you want in Ubuntu, you're usually finding software you don't want and uninstalling it.
I for one wanted to hand-pick my batteries. I specifically pick and choose my desktop environment and what kind of applications I want on it. So I use Arch Linux, but this is by far not a beginner's distribution. Here you choose what software you need, rather than removing things you don't.
It's how much effort you're willing to put into your system and what exactly you want. You're best to try out a few distros personally on a VM and deciding which one you like the most.
no, mopidy doesn't support it.
yet
The dev said that he'd someday work on it
Has anyone else had an issue with Xchat?
When I try to connect to a server it will just keep saying its loading up but it seems like no progress is being made.

nope, but you should try irssi
I've used irssi for about a year and would recommend it to anyone.
Argh. Wish there was a better DE than the few known so far. I like the Applications and Places buttons like GNOME 2, Pantheon's Slingshot when Applications is clicked, the "AppMenu" next to that like GNOME 3, and hiding the file bar entries in said "AppMenu" similar to Unity. It feels so picky yet nice to try.
So i am downloading Ubuntu right now (hope it's worth it) and been thinking, should i completely remove Windows or install Ubuntu as separate OS? I kinda want to remove Windows because it has so much bullshit that makes me uncomfortable and there's still around 10 GB left my hard-drive and i want to clean up the shit but can't find what i don't need for some reason.
I upgraded to Kernel 3.12 RC6 today and now for some reason playing fullscreen games (Possibly windowed too? Netflix/Flash work fine) for just a few minutes will cause my display to turn off, and my sound to skip in Source based games, or continue in Wine games. Control-alt-f2 does nothing and the display remains off (Red light on the monitor, so absolutely no attempt to display anything).
I downgraded back to the 3.11 release and it still does it now. Any idea how I could debug this? I'm using XMir/Mir if that changes anything.

It's most likely Mir is causing your problems.
It's most likely Mir is causing your problems.
I'll remove it right now and see what happens. It worked fine on 3.11 though, so I can't figure out why it wouldn't work after downgrading to 3.11
-Edit-
Well, that was it. Thank you very, very much man! Saved the day.
I hope Wayland gets some love, and soon.
Are there any good sources for themes for lxde, or ones from another DE that would be compatible? How about xfce? I'd like it to not look awful without having to go to gnome 3 or kde, and a lot of what I've found so far doesn't really cut it.
