beats the hell out of me, I use Gentoo
you might try specifying a version to pacman (e.g. "cmake-2.8.11.2" instead of just "cmake")

nope, not working :(
There was a guy in #gentoo who claimed it worked in both cmake versions with no fuss, perhaps just reinstall?
I'm completely talking out of my ass at this point but it's better than silence.
didn't work sadly, thanks for your help anyway :v:

also, after switching to compiz every window I open end up with their title bar inside my panel so I can't drag it out. why is that? how can I fix that? running xfce. currently using a key combo to move the window out of the bar but it's incredibly frustrating that it won't pop up where I can pull it around
how do I downgrade packages though? remove current, go to aur and find another one which is outdated?
Always check the wiki first.

But really it looks like you should just apply the patch from the thread about jreen being broken (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=171303)
Pavelgood tells you exactly what steps to take in order to get it to install.
there was a guy who wrote about a patch he made but I have no idea how to apply that wall of text to the package.
There's a program called 'patch' that applies a patch. Check the man page.
Posting from inside Wayland, bitches. :v:
(Well, technically xwayland - I don't think there's a web browser that works natively under Wayland yet)
Sadly GNOME is basically unusable under Wayland for me
It amuses me how it vaguely breaks shit in that manner though, just over some hanging
Specially as all you have to do to hang a linux system is literally this
#include<unistd.h>
#include<stdlib.h>
int main(){while(1){malloc(1024*1024);fork();}}

Fork bombs aren't Linux-specific.
well the wayland fun train didn't last long
Xwayland won't stop crashing now and now I need my laptop for work...so...
so every time I try to launch conky it now displays this in terminal.
This program is calling the Imlib call:
imlib_context_free();
With the parameter:
context
being NULL. Please fix your program.
[editline]23rd October 2013[/editline]
I can't seem to fix it
Got Arch up and running! Took longer than it should of because I kept overlooking stuff that I needed to pay attention to. Otherwise, I'm loving it so far.
so i decided to try to install ubuntu on my secondary drive, i've burnt the .iso to the disk and when i insert it and boot from the DVD, it comes up with nothing but a purple screen, an image of a man and a keyboard.
it won't get anywhere passed that, anyone know what's up?

Welcome to the wonderful world of Arch, where you never stop loving "pacman -Syu".
Speaking of Arch, here's my current config with Manjaro.

Time to mess with conky.
Does anyone know of a screenshot app like ShareX?
I'm looking for something that hopefully doesn't need a ton of interation. I'm used to the CTRL+PTSCRN, select an area, and have a link to it on imgur in the clipboard.
I've looked around, shutter seems like it does it, but needs a bunch of user interation instead of just uploading the screenshot...?
Thanks!

Haha that's exactly what I've made. I'm disappointed it didn't come up in your searches.
Check out slop and maim. The script listed in slop's readme under "practical applications" does exactly what you ask (even records videos), but it requires a server mounted somewhere.
You can easily edit the script to upload to imgur instead. Contact me if you need help.
I got a new laptop that has Ubuntu natively installed, which is really, really cool. I'm enjoying it but i'd like to ask about dual booting something, is it worth it or should i just stick with wine? Furthermore, since i've never used linux, what's the "must have" installs for a fresh Ubuntu install? Thanks.
It's worth it if you play games a lot, but I'd look and see if most of your games have native Linux binaries first.

still kinda stuck. decided to go with the patch but I'm clueless. the guy in that thread says something about a cmake folder (cmake/jreenMacros.cmake) which I have no clue where is located. still not really understanding this patch thing. couldn't find the man page for 'patch' so I'm clueless.

I'm a bit confused about your "maim" naming convention. As far as I have seen, when any program wants to shorten the word "make" they do "mk". "maim" does sound cooler though.

Read the thread carefully. Pavelgood made a pkgbuild that does everything for you:
So, create files (PKGBUILD and jreenMacros.diff) , put them into empty directory and build package:
$ ls
jreenMacros.diff PKGBUILD
$ makepkg
$ sudo pacman -U jreen-1.1.1-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

All you have to do is create the files as described in his post and run the commands that he says. If you can't figure out how to do that then... maybe you aren't quite ready for Arch.
I just installed Ubuntu on my USB stick, it told me to reboot, so i did, but nothing happened, it's still Windows, what's wrong?
I just installed Ubuntu on my USB stick, it told me to reboot, so i did, but nothing happened, it's still Windows, what's wrong?
Have you setup your BIOS to boot from the USB stick?
Fork bombs aren't Linux-specific.
Well yes, compare that between Linux and Windows (with fork replaced with an equivilent) though
Linux locks up permanently the second you run it, no possible recovery
To boot from USB, you usually need to hit either F2, delete, or F10 depending on the board you use to get to the boot menu/bios.
It should be really self explanatory. Look for a boot menu.

My program screenshots-- but scrot was already taken :u.
A truncation of "make image" into maim is good enough, I thought.
Oh you're right though it doesn't make sense, I just wanted it to be pronounceable I guess. (And it sounds questionably badass to maim your screen)

Okay thanks. but I am now greeted with a black screen with this message:
SYSLINUX 4.06 EDD 2012-10-23 Copyright (C) 1994-2012 H. Peter Anvin et al
No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found!
boot:
Any ideas?
It sounds like you're inside the bootloader but it isn't set up to boot the OS. I'm not that familiar with syslinux but there might be some manual way to select what to boot.

You need to tell syslinux what you plan to boot; you need to tell it where the kernel is (LINUX), any options to pass to the kernel (APPEND), and the initramfs for the kernel to load (INITRD). There may be a relevant label already defined, just no default (try hitting tab a few times to see a list of available commands and search for something arch related). If not, a typical config (i.e. mine) is something to the effect of:
LABEL arch
LINUX ../vmlinuz-linux
APPEND root=UUID=5482bbc2-eafe-46d2-b9fc-42cbd0498097 rw
INITRD ../initramfs-linux.img
Everything but the root mount-point option should be the same for any default arch install. So, at the boot> prompt you should type:
boot>LABEL arch
boot>LINUX ../vmlinuz-linux
boot>APPEND root=<insert your root device here> rw
boot>INITRD ../initramfs-linux.img
boot>arch
I think that should get you booted. Once you are you will need to edit the config file: add a similar label and make it the default.
The config file should be at /boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg; add something like:
DEFAULT arch
LABEL arch
LINUX ../vmlinuz-linux
APPEND root=UUID=<insert your root device here> rw
INITRD ../initramfs-linux.img
Every time it write one of those commands, it says Could not find kernel image: LABEL, am I doing something wrong?

Let me reboot and see what you mean, I haven't had to use the prompt in a long time.
