Does your system meet the requirements? I've noticed you're not running the most up-to-date gnome because it has gone through some drastic changes lately. Perhaps your GTK is out of date?
Oh damn, thought I got the latest with apt-get. Currently running 3.4.1. Gotta dig the internet how to get 3.6.
Edit:
And now it just updated to 3.5.4...
And turns out Ubuntu 12.04LTS does not support GTK3.6, well there goes everything...
Does anyone know how linux determines what a multi-size icon is, and how it points to a program? Firefox has various icons spread around /usr/share/icons/hicolor/(something)x(something)/apps/, but the .desktop file for Firefox doesn't mention any of them at all.
I think you can just use any size for an icon as it scales it down, at least that was what it did for me in KDE.
I know that some icons can be stored in /usr/share/pixmaps. For example if doom.png was placed in there, any .desktop file referencing "doom.png" for a picture would grab it from /usr/share/pixmaps.
Otherwise the icons come from whichever icon theme you're using. Not sure where those are stored.
(This might be the other way around, pixmaps could be grabbed from the icon theme, then from /usr/share/pixmaps)

Ubuntu isn't really a power-user distribution. It's really made for grandmas who just browse the internet or masochists who love struggling to make any kind of change to their system without breaking anything.
If you want cool themes, just install supported ones that probably come in Ubuntu's repository.
If you want bleeding edge stuff, either update Ubuntu to 13.whatever or use a different distribution.
Heh I installed Ubuntu only because I heard it was the easiest one to install and I was kinda in desperate need of a Linux OS to make my University Assignments.
Well then, now I need to find good looking 3.5.4 themes so I can still my urge to customize
Well, let's say it is the start to get me into linux more, maybe in the next semester break I will learn how to get rid of ubuntu and get arch linux, who knows?
Just use gnome-tweak tool to switch themes.

So that's GNOME 3.10. How much better is it than 3.8, in terms of experience?

Things are prettier and the plugins feature has been expanded a bit.
What I particularly liked was that I can clear all pending messages, since MPD could queue up a shitload of notify-send events.

Oh I forgot to mention, but now using mod+middle click/right click to resize windows causes the mouse to get stuck resizing the window until you leftclick. It's incredibly infuriating that such a glaring bug got by in the release, but it's assigned in the bugtracker so it could pass pretty quickly.
Hey, just got my School Laptop unlocked because I just finished Year 12 HSC.

I was wondering which distro would be best for it? if I wanted to put Linux on it

There is no "best distribution" for your laptop. However there is a "best distribution" for you. Since your spec image doesn't include your personality or what you expect of Linux, we can't really recommend anything for you :u.
If you want to have an OS thats bleeding edge, efficient as the center of hell, and highly depends on your knowledge of computers and patience. [sp]And if you're a masochist[/sp]: Gentoo
If you want to have an OS thats bleeding edge, efficient as the 3rd circle of hell, is pretty easy to use, and would still like to build your system from scratch: Arch
If you want to have an OS that comes with EVERYTHING you'd EVER need with almost literally no set-up, and don't care for customization or efficiency: Ubuntu (or Xbuntu). Just make sure to get the most up-to-date one else you'll be missing some features (and/or possibly drivers).
If you want to have an OS that's rock solid with excellent quality control: Debian
If you want something else: Go find a distribution that suits you! I don't know all the distributions, but I've listed some of the main ones.
since MPD could queue up a shitload of notify-send events.
I've partially remedied that situation by adding "-t 180" to my notify-send arguments.
Though the delay seems to be magic-number: "notify-send --help" claims its milliseconds, but it takes WAY longer than 180ms for the notification to go away.

In Gnome, notifications don't go away unless you're actively doing something on the computer. So if you're not moving the mouse or pressing keys notifications last indefinitely.
Changing the time argument does help slightly, but only if I'm actually using the computer-- in which case its completely useless since the notifications stack up whenever I'm gone anyway. :/
I might look into writing a plugin to fix it. It shouldn't be too hard I hope.

What is the main differences between Xbuntu and Ubuntu.
What is the main differences between Xbuntu and Ubuntu.
Desktop environment. Xubuntu comes with XFCE, Ubuntu comes with Unity. Other derivatives include Kubuntu with KDE and Lubuntu with LXDE. GNOME Ubuntu also exists, but you would likely be better off with going for regular Ubuntu then downloading the GNOME shell.
Is it just me or is skype for linux kinda wonky? It runs in the background and if I close the skype window I cannot open it up again. There is no Bar Indicator for it and running the program from the application list again results in "Skype is already running".

If you want an OS that kinda looks like windows and is easy to set up: Cent OS
RebeccaBlackOS if you want wayland instead of X.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/rebeccablackos/
Well I put Ubuntu on it, only one I'm kinda familiar with.

Yes it's a piece of shit, and now that Microsoft own it I don't think it's going to get any better.

I want an operating system to be up at all times. I don't want it to be down on fridays.

Skype for Linux has always been kind of shit, but you're right that it's getting worse.
One can only hope, that they soon finish Tox, so we don't have to rely on Skype.

This was the most confusing thing about Ubuntu for me (back when I was just getting started with Linux). Why have four different OSes just to have a different desktop environment?

Most do this, because it makes it easier for the user to pick their system and just install it. No need to install a system, then install a different DE, change themes, etc.

only sometimes you go and install an xfce spin of some distro and it is basically just the gnome one but with xfce installed and all the gnome bits rattling around loose in the bottom
well actually that doesn't happen any more i guess but i still have nightmares about it
in other news:
[t]http://good-mechs.info/secret/shibby.png[/t]
i installed fedora jam
jack is cool
kde is still fucking weird
i am gonna make some jams tonight

In THEORY they could make one big DVD ISO image with all of them combined, and at boot from the image it prompts the user to choose a desktop environment before proceeding further.
Oh damn, thought I got the latest with apt-get. Currently running 3.4.1. Gotta dig the internet how to get 3.6.

Hey, I've gotta thank you. Numix is actually a really nice theme. Finally a dark and clean theme that Chromium follows!
Also I've been trying out FISH as a shell, and it's really damn cool:

It even autocompleted "this is really cool" when I typed "echo thi" :u. I think I've typed it before somewhere though...

What terminal is that with the fancy left-side shit?
This I'm guessing.

Not quite, it's actually fish with the agnoster theme from oh-my-fish.
Unek was kind enough to show me it, not sure if he has an FP account though.
