FISH looks neat. I should give it a go
What exactly does fish do that zsh doesn't, apart from pretty colors?

Blast processing.
On the topic of Fish shell, it is also great for netbooks and low-power devices. Trust me, I used to have an Intel Atom netbook, and Fish was much faster than Bash in most respects.
might as well switch from zsh to fish just so my terminal can get a little more beautiful
Tried to install manjaro linux.
The fucking installer locked (because idle for < 20min, and I couldn't get back in, because the user doesen't have a password.
Just decided to try fish on a wim it's amazing.
uhm, trying to install arch on my SSD (root partition on SSD, home partition on HDD) and I can't format the root partition to ext4? it gives me the error that the drive is already in use and it can't make a filesystem there. I decided to check cfdisk to see if the drive had changed, and it had. instead of being a linux partiton, it had turned into a isw_raid_mem partition? if I delete it and make a new one, it won't stay as a linux partition. my GPU's fans are going crazy, they're at 100% and I don't want them hanging for too long. need help fast!

eventually got it solved, phew.

So nothing.
I'll stick with what I know then.
How can I change the tab behavior in FISH?

man fish

But the password is manjaro
so new arch install, again. for some reason tomahawk isn't playing my spotify songs and I can't launch Natural Selection 2 through steam. getting the error "Steam must be running to play Natural Selection 2".
I ran tomahawk through the terminal but it didn't return any errors or anything worth mentioning.

also, what do I do if I don't want to have my cinnamon panel on my primary display?
I just had to set up an encrypted LVM manually in the Debian installer (I wanted btrfs instead of ext4 for my root FS, so the automatic option was out of the question).
My brain hurts, but I understand the process now, and I am smarter than I was a few hours ago.

satisfied! last thing which is bothering me is the fact that cinnamon doesn't offer proper multi monitor wallpaper setup. is there a way to make it so one wallpaper spans across both screens in cinnamon?
Jesus fucking Christ, I wanted to jump over to testing from stable in Debian, pretty sure it's been updating for like the last 2 hours or something.
It's replacing pretty much every package in the system, while the system is running.

Welcome to Arch Lin- wait, what? Debian has a testing repo? Cool.
2 hour updates sounds like you're using a slow server. Try switching mirrors.

It downloaded the all the packages in about 10 minutes.
We're talking about ~600 megabytes worth of packages, with each having having to be unpacked and then installed etc.
A stock Xfce install just happens to have a lot of packages apparently.

... It swapped from XFCE to GNOME3 when I switched to testing.
What the fuck.
Basics done, time to soup it up.

I'm liking the process, going from nothing to a working machine that's built like I want it, except not quite as silly as Arch as far as customization goes.
update your kenel to 3.11
I started compiling 3.12 with my own config before I had to head to uni, but I didn't have time to finish the compile.
Installing Fedora 19 on my PC.
I know 20 will be released tomorrow, but I heard the upgrading should go well enough.

I installed Fedora 19 on a VM yesterday. I just wanted to see how well it performs on Vmware Workstation 10, before I try out Fedora 20.
Got an acceptable result. Aparently the best result in a VM for Linux is still *buntu.
I guess they were right about the old image. I'm downloading half a gigabyte in updates.
[editline]7th November 2013[/editline]
Also, GNOME 3 is still shit.
Is it safe to upgrade the kernel on kubuntu from 3.11 to 3.12?

Fedora 19 runs on Gnome3 version 3.8.4. there is a big improvement on Gnome 3.10.
I can't wait for Fedora 20 to arrive.

Any tips on how I could improve my desktop?

Font antialiasing.
Font antialiasing.
How do I do that?
How do I do that?
I am gonna assume tfhat you're either using MATE or Cinnamon, so I'd suggest you look in the settings menu under Appearance. I think there's the options to configure font antialiasing.
