Holy christ, Garry's mod is slow as dicks on Fedora. CSS runs on 130FPS with my HD5870.
Garry's mod has 10FPS and a huge input delay. When I move my mouse, the player follows after a second. It's retarded. It appeared to slightly better in GNOME, but that shouldn't really make a difference, should it?
turning on multicore rendering helped for me
Question, how would I go about creating gif's of different terminal commands.
You can make a gif screen recorder using slop and byzanz-record or ffmpeg.
For example this image was made using slop and byzanz-record:

ffmpeg can do the same thing, but it's less efficient.

Thanks mate I appriciate it.
are you using the catalyst drivers or the open source ones?
fglrx
[editline]9th November 2013[/editline]
I had the same issue as he is having before using the catalyst drivers. insane input lag but not too much of a frame loss. I fixed it by enabling tear-free rendering and disabling v-sync in the catalyst settings.
[editline]8th November 2013[/editline]
also, my new rig is using crossfire now and not single GPU. not sure if it always was like that, but before I got my crossfire setup I had no lag in killing floor (even with the v sync bug or whatever for the catalyst drivers). now it's around 10 fps. I've enabled crossfire obviously. doesn't linux/catalyst offer proper crossfire support or something?
Thanks, I'll try that
For fuck's sake. Steam randomly crashes (I haven't done the GPU trick yet)

Do you guys know what this is or should I upload the crash log?
what DE are you using?
Gnome has a weird issue with steam that seems to be fixed if you install the top icons plugin

AwesomeWM.
Finally got around to installing compton and making my terminal windows all transparent and such.
Would anyone know how to turn off an output in pulseaudio once it's been unplugged?
Here are a few pictures of what I mean:

In this case, when my TV that is hooked up via HDMI turns off or is not connected, it shows up as unplugged in pulseaudio. However...

Audio is still being sent to the HDMI channel, even though pulseaudio recognizes it as being unplugged. If I manually turn off HDMI under the configuration tab, then all audio will default to analog, which is what I want.
Could pulseaudio do that, or could I write a script to do that?
Hey guys. I just installed Mint parallel to Win7 on my SSD and I sorta want to check if everything works right.
What are the general things I have to look for? Any special settings for the SSD?

Make sure you don't have swap turned on or you'll fry your ssd.
Make sure you don't have swap turned on or you'll fry your ssd.
why
why
SSD's have a IOOP life time. If you hit swap you will thrash out IOOP's until your SSD burns out.

Why can't they make ones that last longer?
Why can't they make ones that last longer?
that's an ongoing effort
Oh boy, I'm looking at ccache and distcc to speed up my kernel compilations.
I'm going to end up maintaining my own fork of the kernel if this keeps up.

Same reason they don't just cure cancer; it's really fucking hard.
Wow, this required no hacking at all. First DE I've integrated E with that I didn't have to change something:

Behold the magic of Freedesktop.org's EWMH - but don't play so close to that van lest Lennart Poettering jump out and attempt to integrate you into systemd, too.

I didn't specify a swap partition when I installed, how would I check if swap is turned on?

type swapon -s in your terminal.
Only shows the "header" (Filename Type Size Used Priority) so I assume it's off.

Arch's wiki has a nice section on optimizing Linux for SSDs.
Oh fuck, apparently I do have a swap on my SSD, how do I disable that?
Oh fuck, apparently I do have a swap on my SSD, how do I disable that?
delete the swap partition, or if you have a swap file, do this
swapoff -a
rm -f /swapfile

Oh fuck, apparently I do have a swap on my SSD, how do I disable that?
uncomment it from /etc/fstab
reboot and boot to a liveCD/liveUSB
delete the swap partition
regrow the / partition to fill the swap partitions space
reboot again, but this time without liveCD/liveUSB
enjoy
I read somewhere that it(Mint at least) will still use swap by writing a file, not on a partition.

Thanks, I'll try it when I get home.
Wrote this and bound it to alt+right so that I can switch between virtual consoles even if I am in a wm.
#!/bin/bash
VAR=$(file -s /proc/$$/fd/1 | tail -c 3 | head -c 1)
if [ $VAR == 0 ] ; then
chvt 2
else
chvt $(expr "$VAR" + 1)
fi
Also holy fuck are internet browsers resource hungry, I installed arch on a crappy atom netbook.
It was fairly snappy until I opened chrome. I ended up installing surf, but that's no good for normal browsing.

Because you don't make something happen just by wishing it.

I am using chrome in Mint in an atom netbook and what are you talking abbout.
It's probably a faster one, that or it's the graphics fault. It's an S10e Intel Atom N270 / 1.6 GHz, Intel GMA 950 graphics. Pretty fucking awful, but I got it for free.
Running Arch/Openbox, Chrome shows 60-90% cpu usage, whereas Arch and Openbox use fuck all.
