To get back to the original question, there's a balance.
If your DPI is too high and your game FPS too low, your mouse (unless you're playing something built on the Q3 engine not including source games) will run into the edge of your screen and won't be able to move any farther in that frame. It's called negative acceleration, and basically limits how fast you can turn your character ingame. Then again if you get a mouse with too low of a DPI for your mouse speed, you'll run into a problem where you'll have to set your in-game sensitivity so high that you lose pixel-perfect accuracy.
I HIGHLY recommend you read this thread, and then decide based on your resolution, framerate, and preferred mouse sensitivity what DPI mouse you should get.

And if you're too lazy, just get a mouse with a high DPI that you can change down if needed without the drivers.
Why?
Why?
Because drivers add things like secondary acceleration, drift control, and "precision" tools, all of which distort the raw information the mouse sends the OS. All of these tools are designed to "correct" the user input, when in FPS games, the last thing you need is your mouse moving somewhere different than you tell it to.
In my experience almost all mice are entirely plug and play anyways, so it's easiest just to avoid mouse drivers altogether, since they don't add anything useful usually anyways.
In SetPoint you can disable mouse acceleration, and adjust DPI, and I don't feel any difference anyway

Between Drivers and Non-drivers
I bought my friend an MX518 for his birthday, it's a really, really nice mouse.
What is a Sidewinder X9..?
Evidently a typo since there is no X9.
The X8 sucks anyway.

What I meant with the sidewinder x9, since it looks like the x5, but got display and such. Never found out the real name of it...
That's the original Microsoft SideWinder Mouse. The more updated models are the X3, X5 and the X8. Which all equally suck.
A mouse is a mouse, I used to game on a mouse with a roller-ball. Before I had enough money to get decent PC. I have a standard Microsoft optical mouse, and some high DPI gaming mouse. Only reason my "Gaming" mouse is better is that its more comfortable.
The Sidewinder rocks in my opinion.
I use a high DPI just because I'm lazy and don't want to move my arm/wrist much.
I have it low enough that I can move individual pixels, but high enough so I don't have to move the mouse much to get around the whole screen.
If you're used to a normal 800dpi mouse, then upgrading to 1600dpi is simply epic.
If you haven't got better than an 800dpi mouse, then I recommend getting a cheap 1600dpi mouse (There's one on newegg for around $15)
If you however, is used to a +800dpi mouse, then upgrading won't have nearly as much an improvement, but in some cases is still worth it.

With many mice (prime example being the kinzu) that doesn't actually cut it as negative acceleration (or even positive..) still exists.
A lot of you guys are mentioning a desire for higher sensitivity - why not just increase windows/in game sensitivity rather than paying up for a higher DPI mouse (and their problems).
The mouse will run over the DPI it can, so a 2000DPI mouse simply cannot run 2500DPI.
simply genius man

what the fuck

I'm starting to really think that some of you guys don't know you can increase sensitivity without increasing DPI
but this Precision mode button on the Rat 5-9 mouse is really cool and useful.

Is that a mouse? Looks like a freaking transformer to me...
Id go for the MX518. Ive been using one for like 4 years or something and the only problem I have with it is the cord malfunctioning and disconnecting the mouse hundreds of times. Possibly because its already 4 or 5 years old and im like the 3rd owner or something.
It still is VERY relyable.
Please put me in a box-fort.

You can, but why would you?
You can, but why would you?
Funny trolling man.
Logitech G5 is the best for money IMO

Oh G500 is the same thing, yeah whatever

Raising the sensitivity just makes windows skip pixels. Setting the sensitivity bar to the 8th position makes one input from your mouse move 2 pixels. Set it to the 6th, which is 1:1, or enjoy your shit accuracy.

And in game sensitivity?
enjoy your shit negative acceleration.

that laser from the xai/g500/g9x doesn't track well on cloth pads at all. Might as well go with the MX518 especially since the benefits of the 5700 DPI or whatever doesn't matter because the negative acceleration is abundant. Otherwise it's a fine mouse, getting one soon from Logitech for an office computer :D(old old G5 was dead so may as well get it replaced :>)
