Except that analogy doesn't work because unlike Android this won't gain any traction at all. I work for a carrier in Canada, and I can tell you right now that carriers are not going to carry Ubuntu phones, it's completely against their best interests to have phones they can't control. That's why WP7 had so much trouble with zero tolerance for changes, and the iPhone is the only real exception because carriers are crippled without it so they deal with Apple's demands.
I think carriers aren't going to influence Ubuntu fir phones that much. Seeing how galaxy nexus image of ubuntu will be released soon, I expect to have a port of it for popular phones within days of release. Ofcourse after couple weeks more stable releases will be made. So it will be run by community more like android is right now. Once it is picked up by developers and community that are interested in something new, it will most likely start to gain media attention. The only reason I own an android phone (Nexus 4) is because of community of developers behind it and behind android os. I have an option to install different rom thus giving me control over what I use my device for. Moreover if ubuntu for phones os will be fully open source then we can expect even better portability. tl;td; Ubuntu for phones will be kept alive by community and developers until it get's medias' attention just like android. Plus who doesn't like an option
Any update or changes must go through the carrier. Features must be removed if requested, such as tethering/mobile hotspot. Like you said there'll be the need for branding and applications. Carriers can also request certain apps from the OS be removed or disabled or whatever. [editline]12th January 2013[/editline] Also OEMs are going to want to be able to put their own apps and to customize the OS however they want visually. Otherwise they'll stay with Android.
Canonical isn't google, and they aren't under any oblication to just do whatever the carrier says, and probably won't This would be good for the consumer, bad for the company
Canonical aren't google, and they aren't under any oblication to just do whatever the carrier says, and probably won't This would be good for the consumer, bad for the company
That's exactly what I was saying, if they WON'T do that, nobody is going to carry Ubuntu phones.
the class is the team is canonical is not the class are the team are canonical are
Actually, "are" is acceptable for emphasizing the individual members of a group, for example, the team are the world champions. In the context of comparing two entire companies, however, you're right, it doesn't make much sense.
Eh, I find it comfortable to say either is or are for a company. When you're saying "is", you're referring to the company itself, but "are" is like referring to the company and the whole team that makes up the company. "Microsoft is getting better/Microsoft are getting better" these both seem perfectly fine to me
I found it pretty weird how the video starts with him complaining that you don't get the same user interface across different devices (something which there's nothing wrong with as different inputs like touch or trackpad require different user interfaces) And then he goes on to announce something with a totally different user interface to everything else they make. Seriously, it was such an irrelevant rant.

They are offering the same/similar desktop across devices which others are not offering.
