I personally don't use anything. Unless I'm opening a file that I can't trust. I don't download or accept files very often, and I have yet to get a virus. I've been running without virus protection for 2 years, and I haven't got one. But this is my gaming PC, so I don't put anything but legit software on it. But if I ever need to do something that could be risky, I open ThreatFire. I like it.
Avast.
I'm using Nod32, it works very well.
F-Secure has served me loyally for the past 5 years. Uses less memory than Xfire or Steam, too. Even has a built in firewall so you can ditch the crappy Windows firewall.
Its not free though, but it sure is a quality product.

So, those games are:
Hysis, Need the Speed, Universe of WarCraft?
I use kaspersky, isn't free, but does it's job, gamer-friendly, I like it
Avast.
Clearly you should get XP Antivirus 2009.
I use Avira, it's stopped 6 or so viruses and trojans over the past year or so, just renewed my license for it, actually.

There's also a free version, I saw it at the top of the Consumer Reports charts for Anti Viruses, even compared against pay ones like Norton and Kaspersky. It's worth noting however, that Microsoft Security Essentials also scored very well, and was Number 2 on the list. Avast was somewhere under that.
A Brain?
Kaspersky is lovely.
Avira anti-virus.

MSE
MSE
/caps
In the comparison above MSE did kind of intermediate. There were a lot that did better though. It also had extremely slow scannig speed, roughly 1/4th of some others.
They tested 1.3 million different viruses and the like and AVIRA got 99.6 percent of them. Microsoft got 96.3 percent. AVIRA on the second comparison had the lowest system impact and in the most recent comparison had the second highest scanning speed.
One thing that microsoft did have going for it is that it had the third lowest number of false positives, but if thats what you are looking for you could use the 1st or 2nd place for that category which are better in every other category as well.
From what I have seen and researched I suggest the free AVIRA with ThreatFire on top. Or just AVIRA. Some of the reviews on ThreatFire are pretty negative and they say it slows down their computer greatly or gives them a lot of false positives. Personally I use both, but if you want the least hassle I would use just Avira. Keep in mind though that I haven't looked up things such as hitman pro, so I don't know how they perform. I have used Avira, AVG, Kaspersky, Norton, Giant, Avast, Panda, Comodo and numerous other mainstream anti-virus programs and so far I've found Avira and threatfire to be the best combination. I also have Malwarebytes scanner as a back up, but rarely use it.
AVG has always proven to me that it is a piece of shit. NOD32 or MSE = win.
Based on this thread I installed MSE, 10 minutes later I got a BSOD. Restarted, got another BSOD after about 30 minutes. Uninstalled and have been fine for a couple hours now.
Microsoft products.
Microsoft Security Essentials
Brilliant piece of AV, I'd expect a certain company beggining with G to produce such a simple, purposeful AV but Microsoft suprised me.
Got a spare cd key for kaspersky from a buddy of mine.
It doesn't interrupt me at all (some antivirus software stops your game when you boot it for the first time, asking if the game is ok)

hurr
have you tried the latest update?
Threatfire is really more of the back-up plan if something ever goes wrong with your main antivirus. But I prefer hitman pro over threatfire(mainly due to it being a cloud scanner).
All the reviews and tests I read put it as a consistent top scorer in not only detecting and preventing viruses, but also as an offline scanner.

I have tried them all, and found them to be most effective in order:
Malwarebytes (THIS IS GOD-TIER)
Dr.Web Antivirus (Linux LiveCD, finds shit on the harddrive before it even has a chance to boot up and hide.)
Spybot S&D (This finds trojans and backdoor shit really well.)
NOD32 (Excellent AV coverage.)
Kapersky (Very good scanner, no problems with it.)
Microsoft Security Essentials (very nice tool, especially for free.)
Windows Defender (You would think they'd be smart enough to merge the two, but noooo.... This is Microsoft we're talking about.)
Avast/Avira (They work about equally well, but nothing bad really. Fairly average protection.)
Panda Antivirus (Annoying as fuck, constant nags every few seconds, ad a stubborn uninstaller, just like every Symantec product.)
AVG Free (misses alot of viruses and malware, so I deem it unreliable anymore)
...Do I even need to list McAfee and Norton? LOL
Norton Internet Security came with UT2 if anyone was wondering
Norton actually does have some of the highest tested scores on anti-virus protection, but I never use it so maybe you guys bash it for other reasons.
Personally I use Avira anti-virus, Comodo firewall, threatfire, and Malwarebytes scanner. I have both Comodo and my router set to stealth every port.
I pass every single test on both of these:
http://www.pcflank.com/
http://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?rh1dkyd2
and have tested it myself with various anti-virus testers. I've never had a virus or anything.
Also, this is kind of off-topic but just for maintenance I use Comodo system cleaner, CCleaner, and Smart Defrag. Every single thing I mentioned runs (scans, etc) every morning at 5:00 and my computer automatically boots up at 4:56. It shuts down when its done.
