benchmarks!
BY GEORGE the dirt 2 benchmark! :qfg:
If ALL DX11 games would perform that well on Fermi then boys, we have a winner.
But i would have loved for Nvidia to edge out ATi by the slightest, starting a huge competition to see who will become best by the the end of the fiscal year.

tl;dr: nvidia takes 6 months to create 5870 that uses more power

I have a feeling that the 490 won't be far off, seeing those bench tests.
Didn't nVidia advertise the GTX 480 as 5% - 10% faster than the 5870? On average, that seems like what we got. Yes, Fermi is a power hungry oven, but that shouldn't be the deciding factor for whether or not it fails. Don't get me wrong, I wonder what the fuck they were doing when they made this thing so power hungry and why the fuck couldn't they make it more efficient, but this is stuff we already knew, and its just being confirmed now.
Also, is it me, or does it seem like people were expecting another G80?
lol, the power consumption of the gtx 480 is unacceptable. how much will the gtx 470s cost
from all the hype the fermi got, it sounded like it was going to be a voodoo vs NV3 all over again.
i was not expecting only a 5-10% or less increase in performance.
and im laughing my ass off at the power and cooling requirements xD.
to bad i only have a agp port... i really need an upgrade lol.
Tom's Hardware has a pretty extensive review up. My HD5850 beats a GTX470 in Crysis while using almost half the power. Fuck yeah.
Pretty underwhelming to be honest. It does't look like we'll be getting a price drop on ATI cards either. :(
God, when will they release another 8800 (at least the equivalent in the leap of performance)
Heh

Also, openGL 4.0 preview drivers for ati.

Here is a video of the cards so you can hear their fan noise.

Now here is a reviewer I can trust. Good old anandtech

Good Lord, think about how even louder they're going to be inside a hot case.
Apparently anandtech has crashed for me. Anyone else?
Broke my automerger :argh:
Damn high traffic.

There's loads of links here and reviews. Seems fine, but it's not going to be my next card. My 9800gtx might be tired, but it's not dead yet.
£499 for a 480 http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/Components/Graphics-Nvidia/NvidiaGTX480Series/

And yet, we all know people will buy it.
Not all that impressed I mean it is like months late I was expecting flash bang awesomeness is it the fastest single gpu card yes is it all that impressive no. Now I want to see about a 5890 and how it will compare to these.
:\
Unless nvidia gets serious in pricing/performance, they're going to have to ride off brand recognition this card generation.
It runs too hot, too loud, it consumes too much power, and it's too expensive for the performance gains.

Cheapest GTX 470 on Novatech is £320 compared to £260 for the 5850 (either a stock cooler with a copy of AvP or a fantastic Vapour-X cooler). I know which one I'd choose.
Isn't these benches with those crippled cores, and whatnot? And they didn't say it would be the most powerful card known to man, They said it would be a card. not jesus card but a card.

wtf? and also, nvidia sure did hype up their cards. paying $100 more for a sometimes 5-10% increase in game performance is not economical. at all.

They have also been telling us for the past couple of months that the gtx 480 would be 5 - 10% faster than the 5870. Any experienced pc enthusiast should know to know place all their hopes on hype alone.
well, that was underwhelming...

Apparently nobody can understand that nvidia's consumer target is and has been enthusiasts for a while now.
Enthusiasts are willing to shell out 100 more dollars for 10% more performance.

The smart thing for ATI to do would be to take that market by allowing for something crazy like 8 way crossfire.

But even at the middle-high range, it isn't worth it, it's on par with a 5850 and uses like twice the power and costs more.
Plus, enthusiasts like to overclock. The TDP is 235W or so, it already pulls most of that. There's probably little to no overclocking headroom.
Also, lol paper launch.
