Good Lord, think about how even louder they're going to be inside a hot case.
Not to mention in muropaketti's test it got to 105 degrees celcius
Guess I'll just get me a single 5970 then...
I think everyone should read the anandtech review before deciding anything. Basically, they explain that nvidia is taking a risk with tessellation in future games, hoping that devs make more tessellation heavy games because with the new architecture, thats where GF100 is going to excel, as is suggested with Dirt 2 and battleforge where the new cards enjoy a sizable lead over ati.

Think of it as a bet on the future, if you win, you win big, if you lose, well you got 10-20% performance gain for 100$ more, worth it or not is up to you. Over here the 5870 and 480 (if it really is going to be 499$) seem to cost more or less the same (give or take 40$), that said I'm not very enthusiastic about those temperatures, so if they release a good third party cooler soon I'll get a 480, otherwise I'll go for a 5XXX.
But even at the middle-high range, it isn't worth it, it's on par with a 5850 and uses like twice the power and costs more. Plus, enthusiasts like to overclock. The TDP is 235W or so, it already pulls most of that. There's probably little to no overclocking headroom. Also, lol paper launch. I'll probably get the GTX 470 then if it costs around 300 bucks.
This thing is a power hungry disaster. That is bad news I was really hoping it to be at least on par with ati's stuff so that there would be a price war so I could replace my aging 8800 with either or. Shit. I don't really want this new series if it eats that much power and ATI charges too much. What is one to do... Maybe I'll buy a Matrox!
matrox should release new cards.
Oh fuck this. 6 months of waiting and for nothing. HD 5970 here I come!
What the fucking shit. That's more than a 5970.
when DX11 becomes more mainstream, then i would give a damn about extra tesselation power the 480 provides, but for now, not worth the >£100 extra over the 5870

There's a trend with Nvidia. Every time some major feature needs improvement, they make sure it's perfect before working on another feature, usually sacrificing the reputation of the generation in the process. Take, for example, the transition from 8 series to 9 series. I don't think they didn't want to actually design new cards and instead just rebrand them. They most likely decided that upping the performance wasn't worth it as much as fine-tuning their SLI system, making the 9 series much more efficient in dual-card setups compared to the 8 series. This same thing is happening in the transition from the 200 series to the 400 series (or whatever series it is I mean god damn what happened to the 300 series). They probably decided it was better to focus on mass tessellation than performance, and probably only when that was done they shifted their focus to general performance. I'm not saying ATI is bad because they don't do it, in fact I think it's great that they're able to get all the new major features in so fast. I'm sure there's a logical fallacy somewhere in there but I'm not trying to blindly defend anyone. I'm just pointing out that their method of adding things is much slower but more thorough. [editline]09:24AM[/editline] Basically they're setting up the next generation (even though that's goddamn far away) for a large chance at success.

More expensive, more power draw, same performance. Well I'm glad I bought my 5850.

GF100 may not be another G80 in general performance, but in tessellation intensive games, I would go as far as calling it another G80. With heavy tessellation, no single GPU card beats the GTX 480. Problem is we still have to wait for those games. Also, the time nvidia took to get the GF100 out will probably hurt them when ATI releases their 6000 series hopefully with increased performance overall including tessellation. I wonder if nvidia will have a release to counter that launch. Maybe a G92 equivalent refresh? I sure hope they have something like that in store. At this point everything is speculation.

What the FUCK nVidia?! I want to love you so much, I've always gone with your cards when they were the best option available. (I had an 8600 and right now I have a GTX260 C216) But all you do to keep me loyal is just keep releasing lackluster cards. ATi's cards are $100 cheaper, and the 5850 out preforms the 470 in 4/5 games. Can't you pick yourself up and go back to being the nVidia we know and love? I held out on getting an ATi card for my next upgrade in hope that the 4**s would be better, but, I guess it's time to change.
2 months later: GTX 580
Hitler is not amused.
Would have been better if it was referenced that semiaccurate posted them in the past, and then the second guy named one of the not-semiaccurate benches to back up the rage. In fact, that's what I thought would happen at first.
Um, I'm not sure if I missed something, but did Nvidia ever release the GT300 series? I remember everyone was waiting for it, and now the GT400 series is released, or close to it.

I can only speculate. Theres be no official word on new 300 series cards.
I have a feeling that the 490 won't be far off, seeing those bench tests.
most likely, not to mention the GTX260 and 280 came out, followed by the 275, 285, and 295.
you think they'd add a 488-bit or 512-bit memory interface? kinda like what they did with the 285/280 vs the 260/275/295
2 months later: GTX 580
They'll probably release the non-handicapped GTX480's as 580
Yes there are 300 series, but they were a rebrand of *forgot which card*
In come all the pictures across the internet.
Yes there are 300 series, but they were a rebrand of *forgot which card*
The 310 is the 210 and I've seen a 330 somewhere, it's probably a 230
I guess people will bitch and moan about it no matter what. Saying, it's hot buggy and unfixable. so was the 4000 series by ATI then. it got up to 100c standard fan. It's the very same deal with the 400 series. Maybe things in technology that start with a 4 just have bad luck. like the MX 440 too. When we get actual cards we'll by then get fixed drivers and whatnot. power may increase then, and lower power consumption too. maybe.
