Thanks! Very informative!
Nvidia has fucked up naming policy
it's exactly the same as AMD's except they don't have the 0 on the end I think I'm going to have to write that down, it's so difficult to remember
This reminded me of this thread. Which is better? "NAVIDIA" or "ATI"?
This reminded me of this thread. Which is better? "NAVIDIA" or "ATI"?
I must not read the Youtube comments on that, I know I will only rage.
I must not read the Youtube comments on that, I know I will only rage.
Expect the worse on Youtube comments.
Habbloxian 17 minutes ago I know which one is the* worst - INTEL Shockszzbyyous 17 minutes ago nvidia is* beter, because ati makes shit quality. drivers and cards.

Bravo on everyone missing the point. The idea of me posting that was nvidia put that site on it's blacklist effectively because they didn't say cuda/physx was awesome, even though they had to buy the card themselves and nvidia didn't do anything for them.
if thats the way NVIDIA wants to do it, let them do it there is nothing wrong with Physx and CUDA, they both are capable of really cool things. If you say "is it worth it for PhysX" then that's just being stupid, you shouldn't buy cards for that stuff. But you shouldn't put down Physx and CUDA just cause your card doesn't have it, or you don't feel like it is necessary. I wouldn't do what NVIDIA did, but i can see where they are coming from
Bravo on everyone missing the point. The idea of me posting that was nvidia put that site on it's blacklist effectively because they didn't say cuda/physx was awesome, even though they had to buy the card themselves and nvidia didn't do anything for them.
actually, if you read the article properly it's because they didn't mention CUDA/PhysX at all because it "didn't apply to the average consumer" or something like that which is a bit ridiculous as the "average consumer" wouldn't be buying one of these to begin with, and the person buying it, a gamer, would indeed be using CUDA and/or PhysX at some point or another. Batman Arkham Asylum and the sequel I bet Mirror's Edge Mafia III Metro 2033 Just Cause 2 all of those are recent, coming out very soon, or relatively recent, and happen to use PhysX/CUDA. and you can use CUDA for all sorts of things absolutely unrelated to games, or perhaps for the development/modeling of games. if you're buying one of these things for applications aside for games, you are most likely buying it partially for CUDA to begin with. [editline]09:36AM[/editline]
AMD goes XXXX first x is the generation second defines the performance, like 5450 is low end while 5850 is high end Third is the same as second but specifies the performance in the range like 5850 is worse than 5870 Nvidia has fucked up naming policy
no with nvidia and ati it's pretty much the exact same system, it's just that nvidia didn't want to go to 5 digits so they brought it down to three as they hadn't used three before. clearly, seeing as the three digit cards are newer, no one is stupid enough to think a 9800 is better than a 280
and I haven't seen anyone dumb enough to buy a 9800 thinking a 280 is slower. They call it "280 GTX" though... I'm glad i don't help people build/upgrade computers anymore
well in their defense the 200 series was the first one to have the GTS/GTX before the number

The higher the number the better in NVIDIA's new lineup.
and it's not that hard to understand. Intel's is kind of messed up imo. They've ran out of numbers and they are running out of numbers again. NVIDIA ran out of numbers and dealt with it in an understandable way. and I believe ATI ran out of numbers but added a prefix.

Then again, the X1300 - X1900's also had that (AIW, XT, XTX and so on), but that whole range was really one chip, so. [editline]09:23PM[/editline]
No they don't? So I just bought a new GTX 480 along with a whole new system because of a motherboard short. I'm loving it. Not seeing the monstrous heat that people complain about.
he means with the GTS and GTX series [editline]11:59PM[/editline]
So I just bought a new GTX 480 along with a whole new system because of a motherboard short.
So I just bought a new GTX 480 along with a whole new system because of a motherboard short. I'm loving it. Not seeing the monstrous heat that people complain about.
Nice, what processor are you running?
Nice, what processor are you running?
I7 920. Not overclocking it yet until I get aftermarket cooling.
17 920. Not overclocking it yet until I get aftermarket cooling. [editline]09:07PM[/editline] Those are what I'm talking about.
What's your idle temp on stock cooling?
So I just bought a new GTX 480 along with a whole new system because of a motherboard short. I'm loving it. Not seeing the monstrous heat that people complain about.
Because you must have a great air flow case, like HAF 932 in the example.
a decent case works too
Watercooling works too (but really too expensive to be worthy in my opinion). But yes, a good case can make all the difference. I will just wait for other versions of GTX 480 before buying one. The Powercolor 5870 PCS+ interested me as well too. I just don't like to buy reference cards.
other versions? you mean like more VRAM ones or what
Yup. Better airflow (and the slight overclock) compared to reference cards.
Unless it's a rebrand. http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_210_us.html http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_310_us.html
yes, but within a series itself, which is what i'm pretty sure he meant by "lineup" [editline]10:18PM[/editline]
17 920. Not overclocking it yet until I get aftermarket cooling.
holy shit how did you get your hands on a 17? i just have an i7 :( [editline]10:21PM[/editline] ok sorry couldn't resist anyway i have an i7 920 as well with a CoolerMaster v8, right now it's idling at 33C and overclocked to 3.6 GHz [editline]10:24PM[/editline] it never really reaches higher than 52 or so on a reasonably full load for what i assume you're going to be using it for (gaming) not saying you should get a V8, but to give an idea for when you're looking at reviews and charts and shit that list a V8. i'd personally suggest a Titan Fenrir, which is what i was going to get but was either sold out or way too expensive, like twice the price of where it was sold out [editline]10:27PM[/editline]
Yup. Better airflow (and the slight overclock) compared to reference cards.
doesn't really look like there's going to be for a long while, there is one for the 470 but there's hardly any difference from the reference cooler. nonreference cards are cool though, i have a nonreference 9800gt with 1gb of vram instead of just 512mb like the reference. the card itself still kind of sucks compared to mid range now, but whatever
here is my current OC. I usually ramp up the fan sometimes, if i am playing rainbow 6 vegas 2 or any unreal engine game. They always make my NVIDIA cards extra hot. (so i bring it up to 86 percent or so, as seen in the pic) Haven't worked on the memory, and haven't tried lowering the voltage.. and yes, it's my galaxy 470 flashed to a EVGA 470
nonreference cards are cool though, i have a nonreference 9800gt with 1gb of vram instead of just 512mb like the reference. the card itself still kind of sucks compared to mid range now, but whatever
how about those 5770s from powercolour, taking non-reference to extremes they stuck a killer NIC in one (useless but cool), a Lucid Hydra in another and they made another low profile it's the sort of innovation we need to see more of in graphics cards
