5850's are stupid and obsolete now.
Wat.
Wat.
Because they are sometimes more expensive than GTX 460 1GB (especially when these Nvidia cards are (pre-)OC) for less or more the same performance. HD 4850/4870/4890 < GTX 460 768MB < GTX 460 1GB < 5870 < GTX 480
just ordered two EVGA GTX460 1GBs having a good time

figured out how to get the crysis benchmark working, what i was doing wrong was keeping it from installing punkbuster and comrade so every time i'd go to run the benchmark it'd want to do that which is stupid but whatever but in the process i downloaded the benchmark tool so i have it doing a lot of runs for me now which should generate some rather useful numbers
it always does that because it doesn't have some sort of delay, so you get the 3 FPS from the level still loading
I meant the Avg. between 'Physx off' and 'PhysX high' So I guess it would about 20 FPS on a single 460.
:wtc: 60 FPS dip. How much PhysX is in that game?
a lot.
a lot. I have a single 480 and I don't experience these dips/stutters that people are talking about. Also, on a different note, how much power would I need to run a second 480? I'm googling around but all I'm getting is dumb replies to threads and stuff like "get 5870s and crossfire them instead hurr" or "2Kilowatts 200 amps derp"
There's a physX patch for certain driver versions that increases physx performance incredibly in Mafia II.
is it a mafia ii patch or a driver patch? either way that was off of the demo
I have a single 480 and I don't experience these dips/stutters that people are talking about.
i didn't either, the dip he was referring to was the performance comparison, at least, if i understood him properly, anyway. [editline]12:52PM[/editline] other than that performance was pretty smooth and consistent, except at the beginning, inside vito's house, i wasn't getting the greatest performance. which is weird, because, generally, and most games follow suit, outdoor environments shouldn't perform better than indoor environments.

I've had my 460 in for a day, and while I haven't been able to test it how I would like (I don't really have any intensive games). I have been impressed, 30c idle, 50c on CoD4 under heavy load. The fan is loud, but not as loud as I expected. Need to get my hands on a really intensive game.
is it a mafia ii patch or a driver patch? either way that was off of the demo
It was a driver update. The physX update was labeled as 0.513 and from there you should be able to figure out which drivers you need.
Crysis, the universal benchmark.
My thoughts exactly :buddy: Now to wait until I know I have money spare.
It's funny how a game from 2007 is still the standard for benchmarking high end cards.
It's funny how a game from 2007 is still the standard for benchmarking high end cards.
Yeah, also funny how Crysis 2 is supposed to get 2x the FPS on a DX11 card as Crysis would.
It was a driver update.
yeah most games will have the inside of your house and the outdoors as separate maps but i guess that would require a loading screen HEAVEN FORBID
You don't have to go through a loading screen to stop rendering certain things. The source engine does this to for example when a door is open: You see the room is rendered. When the door closes it stops rendering: That is an example of area portals in Source but similar things will apply to most games I guess. So just because something is not on the screen does not mean it isn't being rendered.. even though with perfect optimization that would be true.
well yes CryEngine 2 is like that as well, but a lot of games still have a short loading sequence there
You don't have to go through a loading screen to stop rendering certain things. The source engine does this to for example when a door is open:
That doesn't look right. If there were areaportals surely the models behind the left wall and the door wouldn't be rendered too when the door is open? Been a long time since I've really paid much attention to them.
Source renders a whole area at once generally. It's calculated when the map is compiled in the VIS stage. If you want to see it for yourself turn cheats on and do mat_wireframe 1
cryengine 2 on the other hand only renders just a tiny bit more than what you can see. so what's behind a wall isn't really being rendered. this creates graphical anomalies, however, where in some scenarios you'll be able to see it, but it won't render, because not enough is visible. typically destruction related
