You use the search function, along with some other people. Yet other people like myself use the mouse to navigate the start menu. The difference between the start menu an Metro is that the start menu doesn't take up the entire screen like Metro, and you don't have to use hotkeys to invoke the start menu.
Metro also uses huge space wasting tiles, the smallest of which are still four times the size of an item in the start menu that uses text and a tiny 16x16 icon besides it. So while you can have everything you need to see in the start menu, Metro not only takes up the entire screen, you have to scroll sideways to see more than just a few things.
Why does it being full screen matter? That actually makes it more efficient for mouse users since you can fit way more icons in. You need to scroll much more in the old start menu.

You don't need a hotkey (why wouldn't you use it though?) to open the metro start menu.
What was the point of you posting this? You vindicated half of my claims here.
To point out that I agreed with some of the points about the settings? What was the point of you posting THIS?
So, is the download in the OP still the latest one?
So, if i get this right, it's possible to make Blue look like Win7? I mean, desktop/UI wise? Icons and whatnot?

The Win 7 interface can be very helpful for desktop users.
uh
I think people still don't understand that this is what you're looking at 90% of the time you're using win8
You do realize how ridiculous you sound right?
The start menu is used to control the OS, which is now completely replaced with Metro. Both look and perform completely different, there are zero similar aspects between the start menu and Metro. You also have to learn a bunch of keystrokes and where all of the annoying "hotspots" are on the screen to control metro and applications on the system. This is why you have to re-learn the OS.
It doesn't matter if the underlying OS is the same (which it isn't), if the method to control it changes, so does everything else.
But let's not forget that Windows 8 breaks settings uniformity. You have settings that are in the control panel, but not in Metro. You also have settings that are in Metro, but not in the control panel. And to top it all off, you have the some of the same settings in both areas that aren't linked together and must be changed individually through two different interfaces to get set the way you want.
I've been using Linux for nearly a decade, and have migrated all but one of my machines to using it years ago. The only reason I still have Windows on this machine is because of games, but that's changing with the increased adoption of Linux by gaming companies now that Valve is on board. My next PC build will likely be running Linux with a Windows VM for the few things that don't run on Linux.
OK
Its different and ruined forever
Enjoy your linux
[editline]25th March 2013[/editline]
Yep, metro ruined windows, we know
Its a tablet is now
Its terrible
Gaben will make games for Linux
Switch to linux
It's not like Microsoft will read this thread, see two forum users who don't like metro and think "well shit better change it back".
Don't want to use an XDA cliche here, but really no one is forcing you to use 8 over 7 or linux, so if you don't like don't use.
We haven't seen any forced obsolescence with 7 yet.
Moan to Microsoft if it bothers you that much, but can we stop shitting up an otherwise informative and useful thread.
A service pack for Windows 8 you have to pay for, I'm sure Windows 8 users love the idea as much as they love everything Microsoft does.
By the way, still Fucking hate Metro UI.

Rumor has it that it will be free for Windows 8 users.
Rumor has it that it will be free for Windows 8 users.
Well that's a start. As soon a programs are no longer available for Windows 7, I'm moving to Linux, haven't decided which version yet.

I guess if they remove running desktop apps etc I won't be moving to a newer version, but at least on my touchscreen laptop these changes are very nice.

I'm wondering if Microsoft are considering an x86 phone :v: with all this.
have you tried reading at least one post in the thread
Which post did you want me to read specifically?
I'm wondering if Microsoft are considering an x86 phone :v: with all this.
Why? Windows Phone is their phone platform, Windows 8 is desktop/laptop/tablet.
Why? Windows Phone is their phone platform, Windows 8 is desktop/laptop/tablet.
There are more programs for x86.
There are more programs for x86.
Yeah, but all those programs are designed for bigger displays and mice.
Yeah, but all those programs are designed for bigger displays and mice.
The Metro UI Start is designed for a touchscreen, people will adapt to a using the touchscreen as a trackpad and phone screens are getting very large, have you seen the Galaxy Note 2. I'm only joking :v:.
I still need my initial question answered:
"So, if i get this right, it's possible to make Blue look like Win7? I mean, desktop/UI wise? Icons and whatnot? "

I really don't understand what you mean
Do you mean the desktop? Like, the thing that has been on Win8 since launch, and has virtually not changed from the Win7 version other than the removal of most of the "gloss" and the start button? You still get a desktop, with "icons and whatnot."
I still need my initial question answered:
"So, if i get this right, it's possible to make Blue look like Win7? I mean, desktop/UI wise? Icons and whatnot? "
the desktop is literally almost exactly the same as windows 7. barring some initial setup, the only time you'll see metro is when you want to launch a program that isn't in your quick launch/on the desktop. aside from the start menu, the difference in terms of aesthetics between win7 and win8 is less than the difference between vista and win7, it's just a bit tidier
with regards to icons, windows has had a track record of keeping icons in from as far back as win95, I doubt they'd suddenly change track with blue and actually bother to update them (though it'd be nice if they did)
[editline]25th March 2013[/editline]
also why is my post getting rated dumb but with no actual replies explaining why I'm so dumb? stop being so fucking passive aggressive people
[editline]25th March 2013[/editline]
also I'm glad that start8 got broken, hopefully it'll be a little while after release before they fix it so people actually bother to give the fucking metro start menu a go before slagging it off

if you want it to be like windows 7 then use windows 7 or fuck with some start menu apps that don't work in a pre-alpha version of a new os
if you want it to be like windows 7 then use windows 7 or fuck with some start menu apps that don't work in a pre-alpha version of a new os
lmao what's all this shit about wanting windows 8/blue to look like Windows 7
the biggest part of the new OSes is the new start menu, that's like saying "well I drive a civic, but I want a Maserati, but I also want to replace the engine with a 4-banger like my civic"
"well I drive a civic, but I want a Maserati, but I also want to replace the engine with a 4-banger like my civic"
wtf are you talking about
Nothing has been confirmed but it's speculated that it'd be free.
Also Windows 8 is $120 - $200.
Still $58 here, picked it up for $48.95 the day it was released in Australia.
And still no proper CLI
And still no proper CLI
it's a fucking graphical interface
it's a fucking graphical interface
Which is the problem really, the increased consumerization of Windows is going to come back and fuck everybody over a few years down the line.
Doing computer work on Windows was already a pain in the ass, I can't imagine how bad it's going to get if RT becomes the mainstream.
I wish they'd just have used a Unix-like filesystem and CLI. That would make Windows my favorite OS.
if only there was an open source unix-like operating system with lots of variations to choose from for each purpose
if only there was an open source unix-like operating system with lots of variations to choose from for each purpose
I wish it too. Linuxes don't operate.
Part of the problem is when people come up with a valid complaint about the OS (and no, "Metro" is not a valid complaint), everyone else is quick to dismiss it with "well use another OS then".
they get drowned in an endless sea of metro hate
[editline]26th March 2013[/editline]
as for the unix thing, it'll require rebuilding the entire os, which means that everything will break which means that it's going to be a shitty os because it doesn't run software from 1993
oh god I just bought Windows 7 am i outdated
