Welp, they've renamed "Computer" (Formerly "My Computer") to "This PC"

It also looks like they got rid of the user folder and dumped it into here. I kind of like that, especially since the user folder is really hidden in Windows 8.
That's how libraries worked in Longhorn interestingly enough.
.
That's probably one of the wort names they could have chosen. I'm all for removing the word "my" from everything because it is implied, but this name is just terrible.
It does seem a bit redundant. I'm fairly certain people would know it's that pc.

Calling it just "PC" seems too short. I like it. I don't know what else you'd call it across multiple form factors, I mean, "Computer" isn't really fitting.
.
Why not just give us the option....I like "My Computer" since that's the name I've been used to for over 10 years.
Why not just give us the option....I like "My Computer" since that's the name I've been used to for over 10 years.
I'm sure they won't remove the option to rename "My Computer"
How is "PC" a more appropriate way to describe a tablet than "computer"?
Because people traditionally think of a computer as a desktop or laptop, whereas "PC" applies to anything running Windows. Yes, a tablet is a computer, but it's all about perception.
Seriously, decide for yourself. Install Windows 8 in a VM and check it yourself and if you like it, switch to it, if you don't then don't switch to it.
I'm using Windows 8 and i'm happy with it, some people don't like it because of the
removed start button and the added metro menu, but i think the metro menu is more organized.
I find my stuff faster in metro menu then in start menu.
Pretty much this; it all depends on how you plan to use your computer and what is easiest for you to become adjusted to. I personally don't mind the Metromenu simply because I have a tendency to be real anal about organization. I'd rather keep shortcuts pinned to my Metromenu than my desktop. I reserve my desktop more for active projects I am in the process of completing. That's why the only icon you'll find on my desktop at any given time is my recycle bin; anything else will be files, folders, and other stuff related to a project.
Why not just give us the option....I like "My Computer" since that's the name I've been used to for over 10 years.
it hasn't been 'my computer' since XP iirc
Because people traditionally think of a computer as a desktop or laptop, whereas "PC" applies to anything running Windows. Yes, a tablet is a computer, but it's all about perception.
But the problem with that is that most people think of a PC as a computer running Windows..
it hasn't been 'my computer' since XP iirc
incidentally this proves that you haven't noticed the change previously and are just complaining now for the sake of complaining
Having it called This PC would help if you got multiple windows computers in a homegroup. For some people who do not know what the hell is going on, that change would be something good for them (but then again they probably would not be on 8 or 8.1 in the first place).

Windows 8.1 is going to be a free update (contrary to what many tech blogs said) for 8 and a preview comes out June 26th.

I've only seen rumors that it was going to be free, haven't seen many tech blogs stating otherwise. Anyway it's great they confirmed it.

I thought a lot of them were running with the angle that they were going to charge for them like Apple do for OS X updates?
I thought a lot of them were running with the angle that they were going to charge for them like Apple do for OS X updates?
I don't follow many of those tech blogs but from what I've read it was reported to be a mix between what Apple do with OS X in that instead of a service pack there are actually more changes to the OS rather than just hotfixes and such, and what Microsoft do with Windows Phone. So major versions will be free but updates (like WP7 to 7.5 to 7.8) would be free. Though I guess it just depends on where you read it from because up until now it's just been a bunch of rumors and hot fluff.
I thought a lot of them were running with the angle that they were going to charge for them like Apple do for OS X updates?
I have only seen possible free update and nothing else.
Because people traditionally think of a computer as a desktop or laptop, whereas "PC" applies to anything running Windows. Yes, a tablet is a computer, but it's all about perception.
Macs are PC also. Today when you say PC, people think Windows, you say Mac, people think Mac OSX. But PC in general means personal computer. So a computer running Linux is a PC. PCs are basically computers that the user can modify for person use. From things as basic as changing the theme color to making Windows looks like Mac OSX. ( I tried it once. hurray for corrupt explorer.exe!) Thats why when I use the term computer, its more broad which means when I say PC, most will think Windows, but if I say computer it means anything that can compute.
I only used W8 for a short time, but on my work computer I have 200+ applications installed, which most are part of a software suite.
So it was nice in the start menu to have it grouped by folder, pre Windows 8.
Does W8/WBlue have any way of "grouping" applications? They just spew out in there own tiles, and it's like, cluttered.

Grouping would be so useful; I know with a lot of various suites there are multiple applications that would look nicer in just a group tile. Stuff like Adobe or Office would especially benefit from this.

It's only been "Computer" in two versions, Vista and 7, and it is a one word difference that sounds better than "This PC"
That's like calling the new Xbox "This Console"

If Blue or 8 in a later update has grouping, it will get my stubborn ass to 8 on my next Windows install.

I have only 4 machines that run XP and Windows 2000 Server, 2 laptops run XP and an old desktop. And one server runs Windows 2000 Server.
I don't really mind the change though.

I'm gonna take a stab in the dark and assume that it's because they want some more focus on cloud computing. I think they're planning on integrating Skydrive straight into the file system and they want to differentiate between what's in the cloud and what's on the PC more clearly. There's also the fact that Skydrive can access files on different computers so perhaps they're trying that too. You'd have 'this PC' then, say, 'Kitchen PC' as well as 'Skydrive'.
Just a guess. It'd be pretty cool if they did that.

Me and my family face a PC/Laptop in almost every room :/

PC is computer which is compatible with IBM PC.
Check your facts before posting please.
I always thought of PC as Personal Computer; hence any desktop computer I see; whether it is a Mac or a PC I call a PC.
Now if I'm referring to brands/series/models I'll call them by their respective name. For example, I'll refer to Dells or Macs if I am referencing them.
