I'm pretty sure Google can roughly identify you even without an account, profile or tracking cookie. There is plenty of metadata to look at when you visit them.
They do. With entering no info google fills in your account information with what it thinks you are. Including age, gender, interests, where you live, job, etc.
El Capitan is pretty much a "fix Shitsemite" and a "catch up with Windows/Linux" release. I'll be staying on Mavericks for a little longer.
I hope 10.11 runs better on my imac, yosemite runs pretty badly on it, the 1.4GHZ cpu does not do it any favors.

Leopard > all
Pepper;48188491']I hope 10.11 runs better on my imac, yosemite runs pretty badly on it, the 1.4GHZ cpu does not do it any favors.
what mac are you using, the mac mini doesn't actually have a 1.4 ghz cpu [editline]12th July 2015[/editline]
Pepper;48188499']Leopard > all
yeah i wanted to go further down to snow leopard but i couldn't windows upgrades have been decent since 7 came out and wiped away the vista slate of shit but i can definitely understand someone wanting to stay behind on snow leopard/mountain lion because jesus christ
yeah, haha, i'll grow out of facepunch in no time, i'll be mature and sociable and this will all fade away 2008 is gonna be a great year
Yeah that was more of a joke.
Snow Leopard is the XP of OS X these days. People should at least be on Lion or more preferably Mountain Lion.
My dad wants to buy a floppy drive to usb adapter, quickly found one that was $20 at Canada computers. Also fucking SwiftKey
what really drove me away from os x aside from poor graphics performance was constantly borrowing shit from iOS -- i have an ipod, it's nice and all, but when i'm at a computer doing things that matter it needs to facilitate that
Uh, it does. Launchpad is totally optional and its faster to CMD + Space to launch your programs anyway.
i always thought that the app grid interface on a computer was fucking retarded it's the same bullshit as metro -- you don't need large icons when you have something as precise as a mouse now it would make sense for touch screens but apple doesn't produce a touch screen computer
I'm pretty sure Google can roughly identify you even without an account, profile or tracking cookie. There is plenty of metadata to look at when you visit them.
I keep that shit on a completely separate user account on my system, complete with separate home folder, separate browser profile, separate Google account, separate everything, for precisely this reason. The only identical thing is I just happen to be on the same computer. So unless Google is keeping track of this via IP address and I need to start using Tor, or they're using some sort of privacy violation method I could potentially take them to court for, then it's not just a scrap of metadata I missed.
didn't steve jobs once have a design thing against having cables on the desk and then they made the 2013 mac pro too small to put on the floor?
didn't steve jobs once have a design thing against having cables on the desk and then they made the 2013 mac pro too small to put on the floor?
Steve Jobs was kind of insane when it comes to design things. [editline]12th July 2015[/editline]
have you considered that you're just being paranoid and those are actually just the top results [t]http://i.imgur.com/jK7ZALh.png[/t]
Yes, in fact that was the first conclusion I came to, because I knew damn well how thorough I am. I just wanted to make sure that it showed up elsewhere (also I wanted to bitch about it to people who understand tech, and my Tumblr followers and Facebook friends don't qualify)
Screen resolution, colour depth, useragent, there's a lot you can glean from the browser that can go towards building a profile for you beyond your IP address. I was reading up on work being done before for analysing somebodies typing style to profile them.
Yes, but with just screen resolution and so forth it identifies the computer but not the user. And I'm sure I don't need to remind you that multi-user computers exist. That profile should, by all legally permissible methods, be considered a separate person on the same computer. If not, then either the laws need to be changed or Google needs to be held accountable.
I didn't say I liked it, its just how it is. Its more profitable for them to have tailored results and advertising that follow you around at all costs.
Well they need to keep the shit they tailor to that profile separate from my main. I'm already repulsed by the constant shoving of sex in my face just by leaving my fucking room, I don't need my Google results also telling me that fucking is the only thing I'm allowed to think about at all times. Why else would I isolate the few times I do have an interest?
honestly i'm 100% behind tailored results, i can be really vague or not know how to search for something and it'll still turn up the most relevant results i can't see how that's anything but a good thing
It's not the tailoring that bothers me, it's the violation of privacy from the fact that I obviously took great steps to keep that activity separate and they may not be respecting that.
The saga of fixing my computer continues, I replaced the mobo two days ago with a new one after I had extreme difficulty in getting it to boot, the new board seemed to have fixed the problem until I was playing some GTA V and it crashed, now it completely refuses to boot again, I also noticed the initial boot when it was working was a little on the slow side. I'm now starting to suspect the power supply which is a corsair CX600 about 1.5 years old, I've already checked the 5V and 12V with a multimeter and oscilloscope which measure perfectly fine, perhaps there is a problem with the 3.3V, I've also not checked the power good signal either while it's connected.
Though the CX series has many problems that makes them non-recommendable, the 3.3v is actually pretty solid on them. The 5v is usually what causes issues.

I returned it to the store and managed to get the CX600M without extra costs and it's still working fine today (approx. 2 years). It's likely your power supply, I'd recommend returning it. You can try the paperclip test on your PSU to be sure.
I don't think it's under warranty still so I'll get a new one if I confirm its bad, I could also recap it which would probably fix it but eh frankly I don't trust it. Testing it while unloaded isn't a reliable indicator of PSU health.
Though the CX series has many problems that makes them non-recommendable, the 3.3v is actually pretty solid on them.
If you want to replace those shitty Teapo caps it might actually be a good PSU :v:
Yeah I had a look inside and was quite impressed with the layout and design, it's a shame they had to cut costs in the worst possible way. Actually now that I think about it I do have another ATX supply that could be used for testing, although it may require some work after I blew out the input common mode choke.
So I started experiencing the dreaded Windows Vista/7 Wifi Lag Spike of death. And finally after a ton of research I found a workaround that isn't great, but works. To summarize, even if you tell Windows to NOT ever try and switch wifi networks or find a better one, it will continue to search every 30-60 seconds or something to find a better work. This results in pings like this: http://imgur.com/FHILlWu Using [netsh wlan set autoconfig enabled=no interface="Wireless Network Connection"] Gives me this: http://imgur.com/teEDo8j Fucking night and day difference in BF4. Like, cannot describe how nice it is to play that now. Everything feels much sharper and on-point. So if any of you notice it, be sure to give it a go. One thing though is that you have to turn it back on to connect to a network, but you can disable it once you connect or your computer restarts.
Oi Pepper you brit. How fast you wanna spin mate.
Faster than postal. They really cheaped out on it. It even has the soldered in RAM. It's basically a macbook air without the SSD
anyone know how i can make my mouse scroll more per "notch"
this is what i have in mind but im not quite happy with it yet [editline]13th July 2015[/editline] and yes you are faster then postal
Looks good, a little cleanup with the diagonal lines needed, but perfect otherwise.
I have no idea why it's freezing on the background frame either usually this shit never happens. :v:
Did you enable frame disposal [editline]12th July 2015[/editline] oh you mean it gets to the original frame then stops for a second you probably have the same frame on both ends, delete one

Unfiltered however, and with Cook's elimination of Scott Forstall, who was arguably similar in behavior to Jobs...ehh. [editline].[/editline] Plus the high-end and server stuff has really gone down the shitter too. If Phil Schiller were on top I doubt that'd happen.
