Hey everyone! Canadian Newbie to rig assembly/upgrading here. I bought an Alienware Aurora R2 computer 2 or 3 years ago and I'd love to know if the GPU i want is compatible with the build.
Mobo:Intel P55 microATX
PSU: 525W
CPU: Intel i5 Quad Core 750 2.67ghz
The card I want: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121770
I'm aware of the issue of PCI-E 2.0 vs 3.0 but I'm fairly certain it won't make a difference in terms of performance if it is compatible with the rest of the build.
Thanks!
It should work fine, the PCIe2 won't make a noticable difference in performance, and there should be more than enough room for it considering a friend of mine put the same graphics card into their aurora
Thanks a million!
Yeah, not even the titan black really saturates PCIe2.0. You'll be fine.
How about the PSU? Should I be looking for an upgrade for that as well?
What brand/model is it?
As far as I know it's just a stock Dell M821J.

Stock PSU's are bad news

Apparently the Alienware and XPS ones are some of the best stock PSUs you can get, and I've had this bad boy for almost 3 years and it's been great.

What is up with your usernames? All you need to do now is get the same avatar to confuse everyone forever
On-topic: The PSU included in the alienwares should be one of the stock PSU's that work fine, but i'd switch it out if you have the money anyway(it'll last you for future builds as well)
With a 770 I'd still get a new PSU. It has quite a high TDP and I wouldn't risk it.
Considering the age of the i5 750 (nearing 5 years old!), I would say it's about time to think about replacing your PSU - and other components of your computer later - if just because it's getting older and PSUs degrade over time.
However, personally within that price range I decided on getting a used (unregistered warranty) R9 290 previously used for bitcoin mining.
You can find one with an non-reference cooler for $300 (or new for $350-60) and it outshines the GTX770 in ingame performance by a decent amount. I bought mine for $270 and stuck a $65 aftermarket cooler on it and it hardly makes any noise at all, loading up at less than 60C in games completely inaudibly.

Dell PSUs are junk. They have a habit of using shitty capacitors that fail after a few years, which is exacerbated by having an improperly configured exhaust fan that doesn't remove enough heat.
I assume this is your PSU (from the model you gave):

It's a standard junky Dell PSU. I replace ones like this all the time due to failing caps. I wouldn't trust it to really have a power output of what it says it is, which can be hinted at by the extreme lack of power connectors.
I have to double on the shitty Dell PSUs. My aunt had an older Dell system which had plastic pieces over everything that generated heat, literally to keep the heat away from the PSU, which was mounted with the fan to the inside.
Not sure why they would choose this, as the PSU was a top-mounted one with a filtered ventilation on the case. Sickens me just thinking about how Dell computers used to suck back then.
300? Hell, I can pick up an XFX r9 290 for 250. Or a 7970 ghz edition for 220. If you're looking for used parts, check out overclock.net
So what kind of PSU would you guys recommend? Should I be looking at a new CPU as well? Is mine so old that it will heavily affect performance or should I be good for now?
My Core 2 Quad still works fine, I'd say you'll be okay

You're fine, but not for crazily long. Motherboard will age over time aswell. I'd say you might have to upgrade your CPU and Mobo within 2/3 years.
As for a PSU: Corsair, Seasonic, Animax, NZXT, XFX. 80+ Bronze or better, and don't cheap out on it. If you cheap out on your PSU, you might damage your components over time.
I do wonder, what kind of GPU do you have right now? If you bought it 2/3 years ago, it shouldn't be a terrible GPU in there, right?
I have an AMD Radeon 5670 but it was malfunctioning, I was blue screening and the drivers wouldn't update, performance was slightly lacking when it did work so I want to buy a new one. Any specific PSUs you guys would recommend?

Against Levelog's dreams and hopes, I am still going to recommend the Corsair CX600. I simply love the thing. Other more expensive options are the Thermaltake SP-650 and 'be quiet!' models, although the latter is a tad expensive.

Damn these things are popular
Is there any way to tell if the CX600 will fit in my PC? The dimensions are pretty close but the CX600 is a bit taller I think.
It fits. They both have the same form factor as far as I can tell (ATX), don't worry about the CX600 being longer. Most of the length goes to cable space anyway.
Alright thanks everyone, I appreciate it a ton, gpu just came in the mail
Cheers!
