This annoys me! You go saying it is expensive to get a half decent connection, and thats $49 AUD a month for 14gb off peak downloads 10 on and thats just internet. This [URL=http://www.speedtest.net][IMG]http://www.speedtest.net/result/547912644.png[/IMG][/URL] is the average speed in Australia and to get 5mb more in speed it costs double than what you pay for this. And we have only recently got ADSL2+ in Australia so that may help?

70GB download (25 on peak, 45 off) + heaps of unmetered stuff.
I can get 5-6Mbit at times (the plan is 24Mbit max).
$100/month with phone.

But yes, Australia's internet is shit.

You probably have a speed boost thing like that guy said. Where you get a whole bunch of upload when you need it for a short time.

I'll probably have to get a small hard drive for booting, and another one for data (I have a 13GB around here somewhere that I tore out of an old iMac). Here are the specs:

266Mhz Pentium II
~256 MB RAM
3D Rage pro AGP 2X (integrated)
Hitachi DVD-ROM from 1997
165W PSU (4 amps on the 12V rail :smug:)
Case: priority mail box
PCI network card

I'm not sure what distro to use. Command-line is alright (ubuntu live-CD...doesn't work that well), but I'd prefer for it to have everything for a web server set up already (apache, php, ftp, etc.). Arch linux fits what I want for the most part, but I don't really want to have to download everything. I think Xubuntu might be my best choice; it doesn't require a lot of resources, and I can set everything up easily.

Finally bit the bullet and bought an SSD. Got Windows 7 Ultimate installed on it and am lovin it so far. Probably one of the better purchases I have made recently imo.
