Interesting, but not cheap
A 'lil update: I got my Astro A40 an hour ago and jesus christ the sound is incredible. Even when watching youtube videos it sounds more like the sound is coming all around me, truly glorious.

I'm sorry.

They aren't bad but to be honest the mixamp is the best thing out of the package for consoles. The headphones themselves are on par with a decent 50-60$ pair.

Exactly. The mixamp is pretty useful, but the sound on it isn't great. I bought the kit in 2009. Sold the headphones about 9 months ago and kept the mixamp. Sound was decent on both, but not worth anything near the $250 I regretfully paid. Even after owning them for 3 years, I still don't think I got my money's worth out of them. I replaced them with DT 770 Pros and the difference was astounding.
I can't really say anything about the newer versions of the A40s and the mixamp. I had the original ones.
the cable of the left earbud of my brainwavz m3 is broken. I can only hear music if I place the cable in a special way. Else I hear noise or nothing. Can I as a layman repair it easily? Or do I need special expensive tools?

Sounds like the wires have "snapped" inside of the plastic isolation. I dunno, maybe you need new cables?

I'm glad I finally decided to buy an external mic and just use some headphones
I'm currently using a "Trust starzz" (Oh god the name makes me want to kill myself) microphone from amazon, it was like £10 and sounds great for the price, even comes with a little stand so I'm happy. I'm also using a DENON DRA-275RD Speaker amplifier with a pair of Sony MDR XD200's plugged in to the phones jack and it sounds waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better then my old headset
Does anyone have suggestions if I'm trying to optimize isolation/ price rather than sound quality/ price?
I'd like to spend as little as possible, 20-40$. I could be tempted to spend a bit more if you could convince me the headphones were particularly great at the task I want them to accomplish (isolation), and are available on amazon (I have 65$ worth of gift card money on there).
I don't really care much about sound quality; I'm currently using a crappy headset slightly above the quality of earphones they hand out on airplanes and it's serves my purposes on the sound front just fine. (I don't mean to disrespect quality headphones but my needs are quite utilitarian, and further, I don't have the disposable income to give sound quality a serious thought)
To be clear, ideally, these headphones would make me completely unaware of sounds in my environment. I realize that that ideal might not be possible given my price range. It would also be nice if these headphones were well suited to very long use sessions.
To follow the posting guidelines, I'm in the US, and the intended use is in VR.

These?

Not sure if you are trying to convey annoyance towards me by suggesting the headphones suggested in the OP, or genuinely trying to be helpful.
Do you have any experiences/ reasons you can share why these headphones are up to the task? If it's simply that closed headphones are pretty much on par with each other in terms of isolation, I guess I might just go ahead and buy that one as it is with my price range.
One thing that turned me off of these headphones when I first saw them is they don't have noise cancelling. I realize noise cancelling is mostly effective at removing constant sounds like airplane humming, and doesn't really completely silence things, but my understanding is it works well in tandem with simple sound insulation to further reduce sound. I've had a chance before to use noise cancelling, and I could hear huge difference between when it was switched on and was not.
So, noise cancelling currently factors into what I want. I'm open to hearing if people think noise cancelling, or at least the kind I'd get in my price range, is worth it.

I've got pair, and if I have the volume up I pretty much can't hear anything else.

I don't think you're going to get a lot better for $60.

There's no headphones that are that cheap with active noise cancelling. get Creative Aurvana Live ($60 amazon warehouse)
HTF-600 are not isolating headphones.
I can't really think of anything well known that's $40 or less and closed, maybe Sennheiser's HD 419?

If you want noise cancellation, I would recommend looking for some of the Bose Quietcomfort series on Ebay for cheap. They are the best at noise cancellation by far. Also very comfortable, but the sound quality isn't great.
His budget is $65 on an amazon gift card. :v:
His budget is $65 on an amazon gift card. :v:
He won't get decent active noise isolation for that.
He could grab some passive IEMs, like the UE600.
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Ultimate-Ears-Noise-Isolating-Headset/dp/B003YKG2UK
I had the old version, but they broke so I sent Logitech a picture of them and they sent me those.
[editline]2nd June 2013[/editline]
They isolate pretty well. At medium volume, I can barely hear people in crowded places.
Hmmm, I had thought I had already found some products with noise cancelling in my price range, but you guys have made me realize that there's passive and active noise cancelling (And it appears all the products I've found have been passive). Personally it seems incorrect to call any passive noise cancelling "noise cancelling" at all, considering it just dampens noise.
How much would I be looking at for active noise cancelling headphones that aren't complete trash?

You could grab some older of the Bose's I was talking about off Ebay for ~50, other than that, I am not sure what you could get cheap. Also, passive is technically called noise isolation rather than cancellation.
Not sure if this fits the format of this thread (posting products and asking for opinions) but what can you guys say about any of these:

So my Logitech G930 headset's charger is fucked yet again, despite getting a replacement 6 months ago for this very reason. I've asked Logitech for a refund for the bullshit, so I'm thinking of getting something to replace it.
I just want something good for gaming and a bit of Skype. I'd be willing to spend around a hundred bucks, assuming Logitech gives me a refund. I'm in the States and I have access to shit like Best Buy and so forth.
Also, kinda curious: the OP says that headsets are bad. Why? I thought the headphones + mic combo was efficient and shit. Having a desk mic just means you get more shit flowing in from the room. Kinda confused about that.

I'd go with either of the audio technicas

The manufacturers bundle a shit pair of headphones with a shit microphone and market them to gamers.
They also tend to have a worse build quality, I've had 2 fail on me in relatively short time periods.
Hell, the HTF600's I'm running right now litterally had both the earcups holding the drivers break (detach from the headband) due to an easily breakable piece of plastic being what holds them in position, and I kept having to deal with them hanging by the wire and shit until I finally got fed up with it and gorilla glue'd them into place.
The sound quality and wiring never suffered from it. The wiring on my previous "headsets" however is what trashed them, both the mics failed and one of the ear cups stopped producing sound.
Just get a good reliable pair of headphones and get a modmic of some kind.
(I generally recommend Zalman or Antlion modmics to my friends when they ask for suggestions, but I'm not nearly as in touch with the differences between high priced headphones/audio peripherals like the other users here are.)
Having a desk mic just means you get more shit flowing in from the room. Kinda confused about that.
Good thing there are clip ons and mics that can be put on your headphones like the modmic.
Also, if the mic fails you can always replace it easily.
I'm pretty much set with this mic, so I can use whatever headphones I want
if I'd got a headset, I can only ever use that headset if I want to use the mic too
I think for headphones I'll be going with:
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDR-V6-Monitor-Series-Headphones/dp/B00001WRSJ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1370286139&sr=8-1&keywords=MDR-V6s
And I'm thinking an Antlion modmic. Not really sure on the mic though, any recommendations?

I can't recommend the ModMic for a number of reasons. There have been all sorts of issues with the v2.0 mics that they're selling. Poor quality control by the factories has lead to numerous delays and inconsistent batches. They have been on backorder for several months, and they're also just plain expensive. I know it's a clever design and all, but for 1/3 the price you can get a mic that sounds just as good. I would wait until the ModMic guys (and whatever factory they use) get their shit together and start producing a steady supply of mics that are well built before even considering buying one.
This mic will work just fine:

I'd wait for them to finish up their 4.0 version with their new manufacturer, supposedly it'll take them a few months before that happens, however.
I got one of their original modmics, so I'm not very familiar with their 2.0 and 3.0 version's inconsistencies due to their manufacturer.
Hello everyone. I am in the market for headphones and a mic. In 2007 I had a pair of Sennheiser HD515 headphones that I loved. It took about 2 years of abuse for them to break and I haven't worn headphones since.
I am looking for a pair of headphones that are comfortable for long periods of time and sound good. My budget is about $100-$200.
Also whatever happened to that guide to gluing a mic on the side to make an awesome headset?
Edit:
Budget: $200 max
eBay: Not preferred, but maybe
Country: US
Isolation: Not necessary
Purpose: Home use. Plan to glue a mic on
Music Tastes: Doesn't apply
Previous Experiences: Sennheiser HD515. Best headphones I've owned.
Comments: Needs to be comfortable for hours on end. I especially don't like my ear lobes against hard plastic. I've used headphones where the cushion wasn't thick enough and my ears were pressed against the speakers plastic covering.
