for studio work it was either the ath-m50's or the beyerdynamic dt990-pro's which cost 50 bucks more.
How about the dt770's?
I own the m50's and the beyer custom one pro's but have also tried the dt770's which are priced similarly to the m50's and I much prefer them. Very similar sound but the beyers have a less boring sound and are also a lot comfier

the dt990's and the ath-m50's are a lot flatter than the dt770's.

well id personally go for the 990's, or go try out both the m50's and the 990's before making a decision. Id sell you my m50's if you were in the UK.
well, my headphone cable for my Q40's broke again somehow (been like the 12th fucking time) and i sure as hell am not going to fucking fix it again. can someone point me to the best deal on a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M50's (coiled cable) please?
oh my god.... that started the day after i ordered mine from amazon.
[editline]24th May 2014[/editline]
too late now. they've already shipped and it would take 14+ days for a refund.
My dad sat on my Sennheiser HD 201S, so I'm in the market for headphones again. I'd like a similar style headphones up to $60 as long as it's worth the upgrade.

Has anybody tried the Sennheiser HD 429? They look like a solid upgrade from the HD 201 and they're on sale. But I want to make sure they're worth twice the price.

-Double post-
Budget:< $100
Country: Australia
Isolation: Circumaural or whatever is most comfortable and allows me to hear door knocks a few feet away.
Purpose: Mainly for gaming/music.
Music Tastes: Bit of everything, mostly electronic and j-pop.
Previous Experiences: Only headphones I've used up until now were given to me for free from gaming sponsorships such as plantronics (GameCom 780, 777). I stop playing competitively so I want to switch to something decent and more sturdy/comfortable.
Comments: If there's anything above the budget (max $200) that's considerably good for the increase in price then I'll consider those as well.
Budget: < $50
eBay: No
Country: US
Isolation: Circumaural
Purpose: Music
Music Tastes: All around- metal, country, classic, techno, if its any good I'll listen to it.
Previous Experiences: Turtle beach X12, Turtle beach Z11
Comments: I want a pair of headphones just to listen to music, I want something that sounds better than my headset but is still in the same price range. It'd be GREAT if there was a volume switch/knob.
Has anyone heard of this thing..? I am looking around at Soundcards, and this little bugger magically appears out of nowhere. In speaking of soundcards and audio related thingamajigs: HT | Omega Claro vs ASUS Xonar Essence ST under these conditions -
- Gaming
- All kinds of musics, but tons of shoegazer, punk, and pop
- Sennheiser HD 598s headphones
- Presently have a Fiio E9 that is going on the fitz.
Which soundcard would benefit me the most, and would it be advised to get a lower grade soundcard?
soundcards won't benefit you unless you have seriously bad onboard audio and/or you need the extra I/O.
spend that money on an external dac/amp if you need one
I already have a Fiio E9, but it is starting to break down for some reason.
Arent internal soundcards worse anyway compared to external because it picks up on case vibrations/electromagnetic interference?
I already have a Fiio E9, but it is starting to break down for some reason.
God knows why, my E10 has held up for years now.
i have a fiio e07k that i'm looking to sell if any of you guys are interested. its got a lot of usage on it (used it most last year, and stopped using it 2 months ago as i got an audio interface), but it works just fine.
Arent internal soundcards worse anyway compared to external because it picks up on case vibrations/electromagnetic interference?
depends on the implementation. generally onboard options are more prone to signal noise but this is becoming less and less the case as motherboard manufacturers start caring more. ASUS have started separating the sound card PCB from the rest of the motherboard on z97 boards, for example
unless you have headphones that need amped, i don't think you'll see much benefit from an external dac/amp over a good onboard solution
I went with Sennheiser HD 419 and I'll post my thoughts for anybody looking for $40 headphones
I presently have a Maximus VI Formula mobo, but with my Fiio going bad, I was just wondering what would be my best option. Which reminds me... What would be the best Tube DAC/AMP for < $200 that would pair well with my Sennheiser 598's?
Budget: £100-200
eBay: Yep
Country: UK
Isolation: Circumaural
Purpose: Listening to music in a busy office / on the train / occasionally video games
Music Tastes: Liquid DnB, Chillout, a bit of eurodance
Previous Experiences: Current ones used: Sony MDR-ZX300 (bought on recommendation from my dad as "the best cheap headphones you can buy") & Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000 (actually suprisingly nice sound)
Comments: I just tried a pair of Bose QuietComfort 15 headphones and was blown away by the noise cancelation and how amazingly nice my phone's music sounded. (I listened to the intro to little fluffy clouds for reference) I was about ready to buy them on the spot but £250 is a lot of money and my dad had a pair of folding bose 5~10 years ago and they kept breaking (though they always replaced them for free which was nice)
Is there anything else a little cheaper that will also sound like angels are whispering my music into my ear? The noise canceling aspect is nice but not actually required.
Got some HFI-580s coming, and a fiio e17, can't wait.
Budget: Roughly $70-$80
eBay: Prefer not
Country: United States
Isolation: Would prefer to have a pair with, but it's something I can sacrifice.
Purpose: Playing games, listening to music and general PC use.
Music Tastes: A little bit of everything, but a lot of house and electronic along with ska and punk.
Previous Experiences: Only ever really had experience with crappy gaming headsets, definitely avoiding headsets in general upon recommendation from friends and several threads from both /g/ and Facepunch.
Comments: Definitely want a pair of circumaural headphones, as I feel I prefer them.
Was recommended a pair of Grado SR-60i's that were just a tad out of my price range, as I'm looking to buy a desktop mic as well, but if someone could give me a verdict on those that'd be fantastic as well.
Looking to buy a headphone amp for my modded fostex headphones for use with PC, but mostly the PS4 as I use my console through monitor so even connecting speakers through the monitor, connecting the headphones into the speakers makes the volume still quite low.
It has to be on Amazon though and my budget is £80. Wasn't sure what format to use as the one listed above is for headphones.
Is this worth a shot? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SMSL-SD-793II-DIR9001-PCM1793-OPA2134-Coax-Optical-MINI-DAC-Headphone-Amp-B-/380698849915?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_HomeAudioHiFi_Amplifiers&hash=item58a36b727b
My headphones are perfectly fine with my sound card (they are 50 ohms), but I don't want to spend too much on a device that's primarily for my PS4. Anyone heard of these?
Can anyone recommend a pair of good cheap in ear earphones I can use for college?

That's perfect, thankyou!
Never thought I'd ever buy a turtle beach product, but will probably get their dolby processor or the mixamp (If I can get a good price) for PS4 gaming. At least I can boost my game volume and use microphone with my modded fostex headphones.
I'll wait until I have £100+ to get a proper desktop amp for PC use. My xonar dx sound card seems to do an alright job so far.
[editline]2nd June 2014[/editline]
Okay, screw that. What was I thinking. I'm saving up for either the mixamp pro or fiio E17.
Got some HFI-580s coming, and a fiio e17, can't wait.
Got the HFI-580s, only thing I dislike so far are the cables, it comes with a free thing to extend your cable which is awesome, the bad thing is you can either have a really short cable, or really long cable.
