looking at getting AKG Q701 and amp/dac
is this a good combination?
I own the AKG Q701, and it doesn't need an amp, but a dac would work great. Massdrop.com is has the Q701s for $150.00 usd.
You have to sign up to view the deals. I won't lie I am shamelessly plugging in my referral link.

about DACs, I'm looking at the optimodi.
is it meant to be run from my computer's motherboard optical out, or should I have a dedicated soundcard?
Also, should I be concered about built in china Q701 vs Built in austria Q701?

Your motherboard's optical out is fine, though it's a bit of a gamble whether you will get more than 48khz 24-bit without crackling etc (coaxial s/pdif is a safer bet in this regard)

After a bit of research I believe that newer AKG Q701s are being produced in China, I don't know if the quality is worse or not. Some people say that the quality is worse, but I can't vouch for the validity of their statements.
I have my Q701s hooked up to my dedicated soundcard, and while it does have a built in amplifier, I can use these cans from my 3DS XL and Cellphone (Nexus 4) just fine.
I just ordered AKG Q701's and an O2+ODAC. I expect good things.
Anyone know of a decent gaming headset out there that provides the best immersion, sound quality and stuff?
dont buy a headset darn it
stop not-listening
Buy headphones and buy either a Antlion ModMic 4.0, Zalaman Clip Mic, or Snowball desk mic.

Don't look for better sound quality in headsets. They will be overpriced and underperforming compared to just buying some good headphones and a clip-on/desktop mic. Either get a cheap headset or the combo i just mentioned.

thanks for giving a budget and what you need it for. If it's for PC gaming only, you shouldn't get a headset, if you also have to use consoles, there's plenty of decent stuff there.
Sennheiser 360 pro or JVC HARX700? Need to make a decision by Monday. Looking for something flat with a bit of emphasis on bass, but tighter bass.

The sennheiser is 5x more expensive? Unless you are looking at a refurb. If you have a reputable place to get the refurb from it's going to be much better.
Somewhat cheaper is the RP-HTF-600s which you could take a look at as well.

The senn was on sale on amazon for $42. I got the JVC set though. I have large ears

Audio is subjective
Audio is subjective
Sure, but the accuracy of sound reproduction isn't

what a pointless post
[editline]26th June 2014[/editline]
you could do much worse than a pair of HD598s, and that price seems good

Do you not get the point of my post, you can read reviews and listen to what is posted in this thread but ultimately the final judge of whether you got a good deal is yourself. Unless it's a literal piece of shit that breaks easily and whatnot, or some gimmick.
he picked up HD598's for quite a bit under RRP. he did good no matter what
they aren't 'bad' headphones from any sane perspective
going to spend $100 on headphones, thinking about the HD558's
needs to have a replaceable cable, don't think there's much else with that

bought em
Budget: $130 (this includes potential shipping)
Country: Sweden
Purpose: Goddamn everything, really.
Music Tastes: ... goddamn everything, really.
Comments:
I need a headset that lets in a lot of sound - I absolute hate speaking with headphones on if they block out sound, because all I end up hearing is my internal voice. This also applies to eating anything while watching a movie or listening to music, as all I'll hear is the internal mechanics of my jaw working in tandem with saliva. Not a pretty sound.
It also needs to be good with music. All kinds of music. Everything from classical to techno or dubstep, really. I do listen to a lot of Amy Macdonald and Norah Jones, and a lot of SOAD and Serj Tankian. So pretty varied library.
A reference for a pair of headphones I've had before were the QPAD QH-85. Lets in lots of sound, and the audio quality was great.
I'd buy them again if it wasn't because I'd go on my third pair, and they're really expensive. The problem there is the wire is weak and breaks easily.
Anything that would be acquirable in a Swedish store would be great (as to avoid shipping fees and waiting time - and potentially getting to try the headphones out before buying).

My HARX700's just came in. The feel absolutely fantastic. Sound is excellent as well. Great buy for $30.
Budget: £75
Ebay: Yes
Country: England
I need me some over-ear headphones with a volume control thing on them, and good durability.
MDR-V6. do you really need the volume control? because hardly anything outside of gaming headsets will have that

It makes life a lot easier, since otherwise you'd have to repeatedly minimize while playing a game.
