A while back I picked up a pair of these.
Any thoughts from you audiophiles? I like them so far but I'm no audiophile, my ears are pretty much terrible at detecting "good" sound and "bad" sound.

These angled pads spoiled me. Everything should have those pads, god damn they are comfy. The sound is also really good for the price.

In your opinion does music sound good/ what type of music are you listening to. If you have any comparisons to other headphones you've used.
Someone actually recommended me those headphones just a few posts ago, so I'm deciding between them and the HD558s.

I always had a shitty "gamer" headset before this, so of course a pair of studio headphones will sound better. I just wanted to make sure I got something decent for what I spent.

I'm a big fan of my 518s.

558s don't really have bass, just FYI. Clear as fuckkk, and great for my music tastes, but for explosions and EDM-type stuff they're a bit reserved.
I love them anyway.

I don't really listen to EDM type music and probably the most explosive type stuff I'll hear is grenades in the games I play :V:.
So I guess that's good to know.
Seems like the best thing to do right now is to try a pair, listen to the quality, and return it if I'm not happy with it.
Anything is better than what I currently have right now though because of my current headphones rubbing my ear raw.
How comfortable are the 558s?
Veryyyy comfy for wearing for like 6+ hours, externals are rock solid, cord is great, etc

Awesome! guess I'll order these tomorrow as it seems that open headphones have better quality than closed for gaming.
If anything I'll return them and try out the other suggestion!
thanks for all the help guys!

I know it's not headphones, but I'm looking for new earbuds. I'm looking for something that fits comfortable enough and has the best price to quality ratio. I'm willing to spend 40 bucks at max, because I'm a cheapskate who hates the idea of buying expensive shit. Anyone know something? Most preferably the cheapest product that fits my needs :v:

excellent pair for fucking nothing nowadays.

treat this as your baseline. you could probably go all the way up to $40 and get something better, but actually it's kinda nice having earbuds that are cheap so you can bring them everywhere and not stress
[editline]12th April 2015[/editline]
relevant: the klipsch competitor at the same price point is shit.
They also look a lot nicer, which is important for earbuds. That said, it's a preference, but they have the annoying asymmetrical cord (left earbud has longer cord than right earbud) and you have to wear them over the ear to not hear the cord wobble (same for all "seal" earbuds). Again, might be able to improve at $40.
I don't envy the gurus that have hands on experience with like literally every product ever, but I'm sure someone else here could throw a word in.

These are over budget again at £107, and at that rate it's not much more of an ask to get the HD558's (especially when factoring in a modmic). Any reason to get these over the 558?

They're somewhat bassy (which apparently fits your tastes - and the HD 5xx don't have very strong bass at all, though they're not treble-heavy either), closed-back (the HD 5xx aren't!) and fairly comfortable for that.

Alrighty, my only concern in that case is if I'm going to be doing them significant injustice with an onboard sound card, or if I need to splurge another £60 on an external amp.

Nah you'll probably be fine (unless you can already hear interference or noise to an annoying degree with your current headphones), just don't get the 250 Ohm version.
open back masterrace
Not really a headphone question but still audio related - Does anyone own M-Audio Studiophile AV 40 - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0051WAM64/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE Guessing my sound card and a 3.5 to RCA cable will be fine for it (Creative SoundBlaster Recon 3D PCIe)

the 558 is open back, the dt770 is closed back. You asked for a closed back headphone.
Also if you get the 80 ohm version you won't need an amp and the soundcard on your pc will be fine.
Budget:70-100$ USD
eBay: Don't have one, but will use if need
Country: USA
Isolation: Circumaural, whatever will not hurt my ears after 2-3 hours of gaming.
Purpose: Gaming / Music
Music Tastes: Hip-Hop / Techno / Reggae
Previous Experiences: Only ever rocked shitty headsets :(
Comments: Primarily right now, I raid with my guild in world of warcraft and they complain whenever I talk in vent / skype, I figure its time to upgrade. Please let me know if I need to adjust my budget, I enjoy my music though in the background of my raiding, so quality of sound is just important to me as the comfort of the headphone.

For a closed-back headphone, NVX XPT100
For an open-back headphone, Audio-Technica ATH-AD500x
Philips SHP9500's are great open headphones for the price too. Currently 69.99 on amazon with free shipping or 59.99 + shipping on massdrop.
Budget:£100 (up to £20 more if nessesary)
Country:UK
Isolation: don't mind
Purpose: Gaming. I want these headphones to have a really nice soundstage to make the game as immersive as possible, also for other games such as CSGO where hearing the direction of shots / footsteps is important.
Music Tastes: Uhh, everything? mainly acoustic music.
Previous Experiences: horse shit
Comments: heard good things about the AD700x's for soundstage and sound clarity, although, they lack a bit of bass which I probably won't mind.
[editline]16th April 2015[/editline]
also heard open back headphones give better positional audio, is this true?
[editline]16th April 2015[/editline]
I really love games like dead space and amnesia and alien isolation. I want to feel like I'm there, thus needing a good soundstage. I'm not sure if open or closed back is better for that. I don't have a lot of interfering sound in my room so if they were open back there wouldn't be much to hear besides the game anyway.
posted in the wrong thread somehow, I'm sorry.
Can't edit my previous post for some reason, but, I'd like to add that I have a sound blaster x-fi HD as an external sound card (and I believe it has a amp inside it.) I think this will influence the decision on the headphones I'm purchasing.
The AD700x's seem to be the best choice. Although it would be cool to have some headphones with better bass, I don't think I will mind. I've been using £10-20 headphones my entire life.
Budget: ~$100
Country: Aus
Isolation: ???
Purpose: walking and listening to music
Music Tastes: ????
Previous Experiences: Sennheiser in-ear buds
Comments:
I've lost my earphones (or had them stolen I don't know they're just not in my bag anymore).
I've always owned sennheiser in-ear buds for on the go. What's the best kind to get these days (I do like sennheiser but i'm open to other things) for like under $100.

beyerdynamic dt770 80 ohm model, they're 106 gbp on amazon. I don't know much about UK retailers but you may or may not be able to find them cheaper.

I know even less about australian retailers (and australian currency) but a pair of Etymotic HF5s might be up your alley
[editline]16th April 2015[/editline]
that's depending on how exchange rates work of course, they're around $130 USD though

Zero Audio Tenores ~$40 - REALLY good IEMs for the price
Etymotic Research MC5 ~$60
Audio Technica IM50 ~$60
OSTRY KC06A ~$70
Shure SE215 ~$100
RHA MA750 ~$120 - you can't get anything better than these in the ~100 dollar range

tried these on as well as a whole bunch of others in the same price range at a store
i ended up getting some momentum in-ears. they are what sounded the best imo. the ma750's sounded way too bass heavy, to the point where the music just felt damp and with no mid-high tones. the rest were also either too tinny or too bassy. the momentum's were the best balance
[editline]20th April 2015[/editline]
sennheiser wins once again
