Android thread V-garychencool finally rooted his phone and got ICS edition
Canadian Optimus G has no SD slot, just has 32GB internal so it's like the Sprint version in that regard. So basically it's a Nexus 4 with double the storage and LTE, definitely worth the $300.
The AT&T version adds a microSD.
At least the Vivid is awesome
(lol garry's gonna get pissed off now)
Nah I don't get pissed, I seem to recall you getting angry and me because you could only respond to my arguments with personal insults, and then you looked ridiculous in two threads simultaneously by not even being able to get support from people in this very thread that I supposedly just cause issues in. So what reason do I have to get "pissed"?
I've already shown to the best of my ability in the past that the Vivid was a device that could be called a mediocre, or possibly a good Android phone at best by 2011 droid standards(lots of advancement since then). Whether you choose to accept that or choose to ignore it isn't my problem, since I don't own that device and I succeeded at never selling a single HTC Raider to anybody.
Regardless, a Nexus device with given hardware should NEVER bench lower than another Android device with the same hardware.
It did. I'm guessing the reason for disappointing performance on the Nexuses is because the benchmarks are causing thermal throttling.

I got a free Vivid (not as an upgrade, just given to me for free), shit is actually pretty good with a custom ROM and a decent theme to remove the glossy gradient crap.

Yah sorry I didn't mention that, I just mentioned it was like the Sprint model. So you're right, it should say
so it's like the Sprint version in that regard opposed to the AT&T version which has 16GB internal and a microSD slot
I like the glossy gradients better than the black and grey gradients in Sense 4.0.
Really, I want to see HTC at least have another two years to try and turn things around.
After two years, if they're still unable to really regain their footing in the market, it'd be time to shutter the company and let some other OEM take up the helm of Android/WP devices with industrial design that isn't glossy plastic and uncalibrated OLED panels.

They might wanna work on that. It should be able to stay sufficiently cool to run those benchmarks, especially with all the dick waving Qualcomm does regarding how cool their chips run.

lol still bothered to write two paragraphs
I don't know what's going on. I'm refreshing before submitting and my merges are still being broken in that miniscule window.

Actually it was one paragraph but I just split it for clarity.
I succeeded at never selling a single HTC Raider to anybody.
Well I guess you weren't selling it to them for $150 no contract. For that price, it's decent.
Well I guess you weren't selling it to them for $150 no contract. For that price, it's decent.
It's more than decent for that price, but no it was a bit less than that on a three year contract so it wasn't something I would have enjoyed selling when the S2 was next to it on the shelf for the same price. No LTE on the S2 though, but Bell's LTE wasn't even up in KW then anyway.

Aaaaand what company would that be exactly? I know when you think of an Android OEM doing badly HTC comes to mind, but they're actually the best of the worst. There's not going to be anyone to pick up that mantle.
Uh then the Nexus should be benching higher. Look at benches for the Nexus 7 on JB vs other Tegra 3 tablets on ICS.
[editline]2nd November 2012[/editline]
That Asus must be quite the tablet to be more fluid than a device constantly at 60fps.
I don't know about other tegra tablets but my tf300 performs better on ICS compared to JB so I was going by that but that could also be because Asus.

I just don't know how to read you :v:
Just purchased a Nexus 7.
Just purchased a Nexus 7.
Which storage capacity?
Which storage capacity?
8gig. All Office Depot had. Plenty for me though using a 50GB Box account and Google storage.
Now to get CWM on this bitch... Hmm
I just don't know how to read you :v:
I make my judgements very objectively most of the time. Even if I find HTC's devices unusable, other people have much worse eyesight and find them perfectly tolerable. Back in Q1 2012 Samsung and Apple grabbed 99% of mobile profits, HTC was the other 1%. So they're doing better than other OEMs like Motorola and LG, and I'd honestly attribute that to their reputation regarding updates being less tarnished overall.

I didn't even know the 8GB one still existed. How much did you end up paying for it with the 16GB now being $199?

It still exists. Google isn't just gonna recall all that stock and burn it.
I like how you still manage to be condescending by saying people who have worse eyesight find those devices tolerable...
Yeah, I'm legally blind so my 245 ppi density is just good enough for me! As long as it can make out blobs, I'll never need that 500 ppi density that's considered normal these days.
I like how you still manage to be condescending by saying people who have worse eyesight find those devices tolerable...
That's not condescending at all. If you can't see the difference between say...45 and 60fps then your eyesight is worse. That's not a bad thing at all, why would you want to be irritated by almost every device you use regardless of platform because they all have some parts that just won't run at whatever the refresh rate of the device is? It's a fucking curse! If you look past my unintended seemingly condescending demeanour you'll see pretty much everything I say has a point to it, just don't take it to heart if something sounds harsh because very rarely will I outright insult someone(or at least intentionally do so), certainly not during the course of a valid debate.

I use an i9000 and an i9100, so it's not like I'm driven crazy by low pixel densities(although my iPad 2 sucked for reading with some fonts). They're nice to have though, so if they're the norm then that's amazing. All I really get irritated by is framerate issues with animations and that's not even a hardware problem with devices, it's all software.
Photo sphere is awesome, will it be available on any android device?
I have it on my Note II :). The new 4.2 clock and keyboard so friggin sexy.
(...garry...)
Oh and by the way, my name's actually Brandy. If yours is Shaun then nice to meet you Shaun, call me Brandy or Kaabii(or Kirby), whichever you prefer to type out on that keyboard of yours.
It still exists. Google isn't just gonna recall all that stock and burn it.

So is it going for $149? I'd honestly consider buying one at that just to have an Android tablet, even if it's 8GB.

I have a feeling that the issue is because APQ8064 was meant for Windows 8 tablets. I don't think the CPUs have any issues with heat, but the Adreno 320 might. Overall though, I believe the Optimus G is unable to complete a full run of GLBenchmark without crashing, which explains why it gets higher results (each test has to be done in vacuum, so no thermal throttling is going on).

How well does the photo sphere function work? I saw a video of it on G+ and it was honestly astonishing to see how well it captured out in front of Google's HQ.
Anyways, hoping that Qualcomm's Krait v3 SoCs come next year with more power efficiency and 1.7-2.0 GHz clocks to equal the APQ8064 with less heat/power consumption.
Just flashed CWM on my Nexus 7 and I can't mount storage. Somehow I wiped the ROM's and everything that I just downloaded...
I also love how apologist /r/android is for any flaws of the Nexus 4. It's terrible for the iP4S to only have HSPA+, but for the Nexus 4 it's a necessary compromise. It's not okay for the One X/Padfone2/Optimus G to have nonexpandable 32 GB storage, but it is okay for the Nexus 4 to have nonexpandable 16GB. It's okay for the Nexus to have a nonremovable battery, but not for the One X/Optimus G, etc...

Funny how you mentioned LTE, since I posted this yesterday.
Sometimes with Android vs Apple debates a feature only matters when Android devices have it. Flash was such a big thing that would get rubbed in the faces of Apple users, same with LTE. But with the Nexus 4 having neither it's passed off as not being a big deal.
Same thing with the glass on the back, and what you stated about the storage and the battery. You're right how it also applies to basically all Android, iOS, and WPX devices. When it's on a Nexus phone it's not at all a flaw or an issue, because it's a Nexus phone. The glass on the back is really something that I'm surprised hasn't been criticized, considering The Verge and I think Andy Rubin have both cracked theirs.

I'm just curious. You said it might be the Adreno 320 causing the heat, but the Adreno is basically as powerful as the SGX543MP4 from the old new iPad. The iPhone 5's high clock SGX543MP2 is also that fast and it doesn't get very hot at all. Is really high temperatures the only way Qualcomm could bump their GPU performance to match Imagination Technologies?

Who knows. Apparently the Exynos 5250 and APQ8064 trade blows in GPU speed. I haven't really seen any real CPU benchmarks though.
[editline]2nd November 2012[/editline]
Juuust kidding. The Exynos 5250 looks like it beats the APQ8064 in browser benchmarks, so there's a definite IPC deficit in the Krait core against Cortex A15s.
[editline]2nd November 2012[/editline]
Hopefully Krait v3 comes close to Cortex A15 IPC with lower power consumption, and hopefully HTC doesn't go full retard and go with Tegra 4 and becomes the launch partner for the next gen Krait SoCs.

I feel so bad for HTC. The one time they move away from Qualcomm was when Qualcomm smashed open the mobile CPU market and had the best efficiency-performance ratio.
[editline]3rd November 2012[/editline]
Also uh, it's great that the Adreno 320 and Mali T604 match the SGX543MP4 in the A5X. The issue is that that chip is now eight months old and has been retired for one twice as fast. I guess with Apple trying to really push into the mobile gaming market they're putting more into having the best GPU chips. I remember back with the iPhone 4 their SGX535 was really showing its age compared to the SGX540 in the i9000. I wouldn't really be concerned but seeing the Nexus 10 browser scroll down the page after the finger left the screen was very concerning.
[editline]3rd November 2012[/editline]
Or hey, maybe the Nexus 10 just needs a software patch. We'll find out when people start buying it I guess.
