Hey folks, I'm looking for a tablet with an SD card slot and is relatively cheap for < $250
Galaxy Tab 2?
You'll come to hate 7" 16:9 devices though.
So, I'm planning to buy an Android phone, and I've found Xperia Play for around 100 Euros...
I mostly want to play emulated games on it, should I go for it?
no, it's an awful phone
no, it's an awful phone
But it's the only phone with physical gamepad...
But it's the only phone with physical gamepad...
And it was one of the worst phones ever made in 2011, and a huge failure for Sony. I've only ever seen one person with one, and it was a gift.

Here's something from Engadget.
Squeaks and creaks were sadly too readily apparent with the Play, mostly owing to the poor quality of plastics used in its construction.

It's very dim. We're not talking about it being mediocre or some way short of the best, it's so lacking in brightness that it's borderline dysfunctional.

it's still one the worst screens we've seen on a review phone -- hell, review hardware of any kind.
I'm not really even cherrypicking these either. It's bad. Back when Engadget did X/10 scores it was their lowest rated phone of 2011 and for good reason. Oh and it's stuck on Gingerbread forever.
But it's the only phone with physical gamepad...
Too bad the gamepad is so horrible even on-screen buttons are just as good.
Look into iControlPad or similar instead.
But it's the only phone with physical gamepad...
buy a psp go instead and you get the bonuses of A)better build quality B) better battery life C) more game selection D) better emulator support and E) much cheaper price tag
[editline]22nd September 2012[/editline]
icontrolpad and such are garbage and you are literally better off buying a psp for less than the price of a phone gamepad
I got my Xperia Play for free from a friend when he got a new phone and i'm loving it. I can't really confirm any of the problems you're describing, i'm getting no squeaks or creaks and the screen is clear to me and more than bright enough, i often even turn the brightness.
When i play games, it's mainly emulator games (NES, SNES, N64, GB/C/A, PSX) and it runs those really well, but also does all the other things you'd use a smartphone for perfectly fine.
have you had a smartphone before it
[editline]22nd September 2012[/editline]
i loved my motorola triumph but after having a nexus s for two months its pretty much the worst phone that has been manufactured to date
Cheesemonkey, did anyone steal your punctuation?

That's why he's pissy.

OK so we've got reviews saying it's bad, someone who works in the cell industry says it's bad. The market says it's bad because it sold poorly, not being widely carried also contributed to that. But we've got one guy who owns it and says all those issues are non existent. Forgive my scepticism, but I'm not buying it because I've used the phone.

Yes, Android's earliest flagship model, The G1! :suicide:
I won't deny that there's better phones for the price of the Xperia Play, but this phone suits my needs. A phone that's fast enough to be fun to use (The G1 was more like a struggle with the slow UI, i wanted to throw it against a wall every day) and Hardware Keyboard or -Gamepad, mainly for games since i stopped bothering with actual handheld gaming devices long ago.
Android's selection of phones with actual hardware keyboards is really small sadly.
Motorola pushed the ICS update for the Bionic back to Q4. Looks like I'm putting it on myself then.
But it's the only phone with physical gamepad...
My friend has one, and its honestly a terrible phone. Really poor build quality and the screen is really bad. Its also ridiculously thick and won't be updated to ICS

this is pretty standard android stockholm syndrome
"it may be bad for the price but im okay with a phone that is generally accepted as one of the worst telephones ever built. it fits my needs"
So what's the best custom rom for the international galaxy s3 at the moment? I'm having a hard time finding useful info on XDA.

Stock jellybean with siyahkernel.
Edit:
I guess you could say.....
...FlashStock
The Xperia Play has really bad specifications and it wouldn't really be great for gaming in the first place.
Look what I got today:

*spends the next 10 minutes telling me all the awesome new features my galaxy tab 10.1 had for a year*

How about the feature of being smooth? I don't remember any Tegra 2 tablets having that feature.

Its called throwing away the shitty touchwiz ROM and tossing pure jelly bean on it. Now its just as fast as an iPad 2(but then again I don't really use 3rd party apps)

I find that very difficult to believe with how notorious Tegra 2 was for being a crippled dual core SoC(missing stuff like NEON), but OK.

I have a Tegra 2 device with ICS installed on it and it is actually pretty fast

Wait a minute. That's the black S3...
OMG, do want.
I think I'll get myself a Nexus 7 soon. Need something so I can properly read or browse during train trips and lectures. Reading from my HTC Desire hurts my eyes after a while. Seems the Nexus is the best choice at the moment? It's not as big as most tablets but I was looking for something portable but powerful.
Nexus 7 is very powerful, it has a quad core and everything. Although it lacks an sd card slot so if 8GB or 16GB is not enough, you are going to have a bad time.
Either way, it's a really good tablet. You even get $25 to buy apps, but you should get it and sign into the tablet fast because the offer expires on September 30, 2012 and the actual credit expires in September 30, 2013.
You won't find a better tablet out on the market today for the same price, that's for sure.
Bought my mom a Nexus 7 for her birthday. She saw me using mine all the time and asked for one, so now she's got it!
Speaking of Nexus 7's, I just bought a useful case for mine: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Function-Standby-feature-Android-Jellybean/dp/B008GSMRAY/
I'm hoping it's not made out of horrible fabric.
