Going to get my mum a Nexus 7 as her birthday present as well!
Too bad it was on the 19th and the Nexus 7 won't release until mid October here.
After a couple weeks of using ICS, here's my thoughts...
- Holy shit I should have flashed ICS a long fucking time ago
- Apex Launcher is the shit
- Settings in the notification bar is beyond useful, now only if I can get that Samsung Notification Bar into mine...
- Flicking shit off the notification bar is fun I tell you, FUN!
- ICS-style apps work now and look great!
- Using ICS versions of apps is so much better than the GB ones (i.e. Google Reader, Talk, GMail, etc.)
- ICS GMail is so much better, no zoom though but still so much better!
- Shit doesn't lag as much, holy fuck it's so much better
TL;DR: You guys were right, I shoulda rooted and flashed ICS a long fucking time ago...

All hail the OP
Bought my mom a Nexus 7 for her birthday. She saw me using mine all the time and asked for one, so now she's got it!
Speaking of Nexus 7's, I just bought a useful case for mine: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Function-Standby-feature-Android-Jellybean/dp/B008GSMRAY/
I'm hoping it's not made out of horrible fabric.
Funny, my mom wants to get one too after I showed here a video review of it this morning. :v:

Possible thread title?? I think so.

Nope. Just poor lighting I'm afraid.
And which moron at Google decided to remove the 'uploads only' option in the ICS YouTube app...

I don't know why Google thinks that anybody gives a shit what another user likes/favorites/comments on. 90% of the time it's just mundane stuff that has nothing to do with what they upload. I'm surprised it's even an option to view that, let alone the default.

Now wait until you get Jellybean.
I've successfuly unlocked my Galaxy Nexus, now what should I root it with? Also when I do that, how do I get the backups I made with Nexus Root Toolkit back onto my phone?
Does anyone know if putting a ROM on the Samsung galaxy mini 2 gt6500D is possible?
Stock jellybean with siyahkernel.
Edit:
I guess you could say.....

What's so great about siyahkernel? (I'm using a CM10 ROM atm, and I know there's a difference between rom and kernel)
Now wait until you get Jellybean.
I don't think it would be great for my phone. I mean the ICS TOM by Sony is already about 340MB, using up almost all of the system ROM partition, which is 400MB. If I want Google Now, that takes up 60MB to flash alone. Jelly Bean is how big again? I'm pretty sure it's more than 400MB. I could repartition the whole internal storage but that wouldn't be so great as the total us only a mere 1GB and the space for apps and data would suffer severely. Unless CM10 for my device is less than 400MB, stable and doesn't mess up the experience that I'll consider it.
I also found out that my device has a pretty good developer support for ROMs and such. Not like the S2/S3 but better than a lot of devices, probably because it's easier or more people have this cheap device.

A dev who knows what he's actually doing.
It includes sound enhancements which actually work too as they're taken from voodoo sound. A good app called STweaks that has decent options and various other things.
Can someone tell me how the fuck to get flash player on this xoom

If there is a Jellybean ROM being developed for your phone, the developers will probably have taken into account the limited space to work with. I can't vouch for everyone, but in my experience Jellybean has been a lot less resource hungry than stock ICS was (might just be able to chalk that one up to nixxing the bloatware from the stock build). Couldn't hurt to make a nandroid backup of your current system setup and give Jellybean a go!

This post is confusing.
The GNex toolkit will take care of the rooting - its one of the built-in options.
Did you already install a custom recovery, make a nandroid backup, and transfer it to your computer? If not, that's the next step after rooting - I like to store the stock backup someplace safe before I start digging into the guts of the device. By default, backups initiated from recovery will be stored on your SD card (built into the GNex) which will survive factory resets/system wipes. I've never done backups via the Galaxy Nexus Toolkit, but I would imagine it does the same thing. If you want to keep the copies on your computer alone to free SD space, you can just move the backups to-and-fro like a normal file/folder via MTP storage.

Sideload the latest Flash Player APK.
It's tricky to find, since Adobe has pulled it from Google Play.

Sorry, I was mixing up 'rooting' with getting a mod onto the phone like Cyanogen or Jelly Bean. I want to get Jelly Bean onto my phone because Verizon is taking forever to release it, but I'm not sure what my next step is to get there.

apk's available here:

I'm glad I uninstalled it, no more stupid flash ads.
Finally! The BBC has decided to make a non-flash version of the iPlayer app.
Bad news is they're just switching to Adobe Air.

Cool, the Galaxy Nexus has an incredible amount of custom ROMs available. It really depends on what kind of experience you're looking for - though almost all of the available ROMs are Jelly Bean based by now. Here's a listing of a bunch of them:
http://rootzwiki.com/forum/362-vzw-galaxy-nexus-development/
For what it's worth, I use Bugless Beast which is probably a page or two in by now. It's fully based on the Google Source code with very, very minimal additions (a custom reboot menu and emoji's built into the mms application are about the only front facing additions you'll notice vs. a pure AOSP build).
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/9621-romjbicsaosp-bugless-beast/
Other notables are obviously Cyanogenmod and AOKP. If you're interested in Cyanogenmod, CM10(jellybean) is still in preview builds so the ROM is built nightly. I have no idea how stable it is as I haven't used Cyanogenmod since the OG Droid days, so if you encounter problems be prepared to have to flash a new build daily until it gets resolved. That said, CM10 has far more customizations available if you're into that sort of thing.
-CM10: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/32574-romofficial-cm10-nightlies/
I've never used AOKP and frankly, I haven't heard a lot about it outside of it coming with a ton of customization options out of the box.
-AOKP: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/32152-romjbpure-aokp-unofficial-nightlies/
I'd honestly recommend starting with Bugless Beast if you're new to flashing new ROMs. It'll give you the full Jellybean experience, and see how your phone reacts to the OS. If everything runs smoothly that'll be a good gauge as to how well the other ROMs might perform. The instructions for how to flash the ROMs are pretty much standard:
- Download the .zip package from the thread
- For beginners, rename the package as "update.zip"
- Copy the zip to your phone's SD Card (MTP storage for the Galaxy Nexus)
- Reboot into your custom recovery (For the Galaxy Nexus, power the phone off, then hold power+volume up and down to enter the bootloader, then use the volume up/down keys to select the recovery option and press the power button to confirm your selection)
- In recovery, you're going to want to wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, and wipe dalvik cache (dalvik cache option in the "advanced" section of Clockworkmod Recovery)
- This step depends on what recovery you have installed (Clockworkmod vs TWRP), but for CWM go to "install zip from sd card > apply /sdcard/update.zip" if you renamed it in step 2 and put it on the sd card, otherwise you can browse for it by selecting the "choose zip from sdcard" option.
- The install process should take care of the rest, wait until it finishes and reboot to make sure that the flash worked.
As a note, the phone might take a REALLY long time to finish booting after you install a Jellybean ROM (Initially I think it can be upwards of 5-10 minutes). Don't panic - if this becomes an issue where rebooting takes forever you can try installing the updated vzw radios for the Galaxy Nexus. A lot of people reported that this fixes the slow boot times:
http://wiki.rootzwiki.com/Samsung_Galaxy_Nexus_(toro)#Flash_Radio_Updates
^These might be good to flash now before you start flashing ROMs, they'll work just fine with ICS and you don't have to do any system/data wiping to install them.
Also keep in mind that for the VZW Galaxy Nexus the builds will often be referred to as "toro" which is just the codename for the Verizon version. Don't try and flash a build built for Maguro/Toroplus/Linaro - those are for different carriers.

EDIT:
jesus that was an unnecessarily long-winded response.

So I don't need flash at all..?
I dunno, I don't want websites to be messed up or something...
gary, let us do the computer science, we know way more than you. You don't need Flash. Besides, I am not even sure if it'd run on your phone.

Most sane website owners have at least added a HTML5 alternative to their flash components, if not switching to HTML5 completely.
Of course it depends on what websites you go to, but in my experience, 99,99% of flash were terrible ads when I accessed a web in my phone, which ends up needing more resources, thus needing more battery and a shitload of data (important if you have a limit on your data network).

The SK17a doesn't exactly have terrible specs (inb4 the top-tier phone brigade smashes me to death with quadcores), so it would run, but good luck with that puny display :v:

Verizon already released Jellybean for the Galaxy Nexus.

:(
shit

but Samsung has confirmed that jb will be released for both s3 and s2??

Samsung Sweden confirmed it a while back

So I don't need flash, okay. There goes all of those kongergate games I never played. Also I like my small screen. I can like use it with one hand, and my thumb reaches everything on the screen. I can actually get it out of my pocket when I'm sitting down. Although I do wish it was faster...
Hey, it's what I have. I use my phone for a bunch of stuff.
Yah it's not so bad. Could be worse. You could have an HTC Wildfire or Desire C.

One more reason why my next phone will be a nexus device.
Speaking of nexus devices, I got my N7 on Thursday and looking through Google Play I don't really see anything I want to spend my $25 gift cert on. Everything I want I already have.

Yeah, S2 should get JB officially somewhere around November. If not, the Note has been confirmed a billion times already, and the HW is nearly identical so Note sources could be usable for all the ROMs.
