So you can trigger a factory reset of Samsung devices running TouchWiz UI (S2, S3, Notes..) with no confirmation by linking to a specific phone number. As soon as you click that, say goodbye to your data:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/10fzzn/the_ussd_code_to_factory_data_reset_a_galaxy_s3/
video proof: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2-0B04HPhs
Knowing Samsung, IF this will ever get fixed (eMMC superbrick bug on S2/Note still isn't IIRC), it'll take at least a year before they push out a fix for every region.
The chances of me getting another Samsung device (unless they manufacture the new Nexus) are dropping every day.

Don't you have to "open" that phone number with the standard browser?
Seems like you're stuck with Gingerbread then.
nah
windows phone
Don't you have to "open" that phone number with the standard browser?
On S2 and S Advance, you have to open it via the browser. The S3 is vulnerable via NFC. (others are yet unknown I suppose, but it seems like it affects all of TouchWiz)
Still, a security issue like this is an extreme failure when I think of how many people use the stock ROM, stock apps etc.
edit: actually there's confusion in what method triggers it on what device:
The code can be used to trigger the reset for a Galaxy SIII, according to Twitter user @pof. Embedding it in a simple frame will automatically trigger a non-user initiated factory reset of the device, he added.
However, simply browsing a website with the code embedded will not trigger the reset, but opening a message via QR, NFC or WAP Push SMS will. When the website link opens, it starts the wipe.
I'm still considering which phone I should get.
I'm looking for a budget phone that can play most games.
Yeah, about that Galaxy SIII issue:

This game is AMAZING, 2GB of awesome graphics and fun gameplay. Although the thumb stick to move should be mappable, along with the other buttons...

what's the budget
Hello Android users.
I'm planning to buy the Google Nexus 7 tablet (either tomorrow or at the end of this week) as a educationnal tool, mostly to read the pdf books such as these ones instead of always bringing the physical copies, especially when I travel or have to go to the art university.
Do you guys think this is a good choice/idea? This is going to be my very first tablet. Are there also good apps to use for this tablet (I've been thinking about using Dropbox for example) ?
Yesterday we took up the rumors about the next Nexus phone and the latest speculation is that we might see a new Nexus from HTC this fall. According to an anonymous source, the device will be equipped with a 5-inch screen with 1080p, a fyrkärnigt Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chip, a 12MP camera, a front 2MP camera and a generous 2500mAh battery.
The internal storage space is according to the source of 64GB. HTC made the acquaintance the very first Nexus phone (Nexus One) and, if the rumor is true now, therefore, be one of the manufacturers that offer new Nexus hardware this fall.
Last spring reported namely the Wall Street Journal that Google this year is working with several different manufacturers, which will result in a number of Nexus releases this fall. We will hopefully correct answers within a few months.
nice!

Yes, yes and yes. You can use Dropbox and a bunch of other cloud storage services as there are official apps for that. You can use note taking apps like Evernote. In general, it's a great device and you even get $25 Play Store credit upon logging in. (This expires on September 30th, FYI)
I use mine in class to pull up the pdf's for most of my textbooks, but it is still much easier to write notes and summaries in actual copybooks.
I also recommend Paranoid Android for a custom rom. The tablet mode is awesome and makes it feel more like a tablet then a big phone.
Also if you can, get a 16gb. I can load mine up with tons of old games, movies and music and a compact linux environment for when I use my bluetooth mouse and keyboard.

Up to about 250 Pounds.

If it's just for reading get a kindle or something.
If it's just for reading get a kindle or something.
Kindles are horrible for pdfs and textbooks.
Even after chopping up my math textbook into 15mb pieces my kindle takes around 10 seconds to load any page after the first few, then the zoom options are terrible and half the graphs and content won't load.
I love my kindle for strictly text novels and books, but for a textbook it is horrible.
EDIT: Are you talking about the kindle e-reader or tablet? Even the tablet doesn't compare to the nexus7 at price and developer support.
If it's just for reading get a kindle or something.
From what I've read, the Kindle doesn't seem that good (screen, app choice, hardware, etc...) compared to the Nexus 7, even if I'm buying a tablet mostly "for reading".
What's up with Sony's displays? Reviews consistently say that there's poor viewing angles on the Xperia T and S, which I find strange when they are basically the best in the display business. Okay, maybe not the best, but their TVs have consistently high image quality ratings.
Big review sites tend to not like anything in the Sony mobile line, I lean towards the smaller reviews. The Xperia V should be getting more attention then the T, seems more like the flagship device. Someone on XDA said he liked the screen on the Ion compared to the T, who knows it might have a screen problem like the S.
I saw an Xperia S instore and the screen was much worse than the S3 and One X. Also the buttons weren't very nice to use on the buttom of the phone.
The buttons are easier if you don't actually press it, you kind of glide your finger above them, it's the same for the Xperia Ion (It's funny to watch people tap at it hard like monkeys). The Xperia S has or had some issues with the screen, my friend says she doesn't notice it all, the design was what really compelled people to buy it.
Hi guys.
Sorry for the question I'm about to make but, how the hell do I root a galaxy player?
I've tried it a few times, and I still haven't been able to root it.
So... Any help?
Please?...
I don't know, but I used z4root for my phone. I have a huawei u8500 and it worked just fine for me.
I was too lazy to plug it into my PC and do it because I was really, really bored at school these days. And it worked fine. Also the temporary root is awesome enough for me.

3.55GB at 2G speeds v:v:v
Last Tuesday I got my ZTE ZTE T12 (Telstra Uno) which is android, I am loving it so far. I bought Angry Birds Space for 99 cents, except I did it twice, and now neither are downloadable, heck not even the ads in the game are gone like I wanted. I asked for a refund, but turns out, you had to do it within 15 minutes. Can someone help?
It won't. It has the same RAM as the i9000 and a faster CPU(but waay worse GPU). Samsung's excuse was that Touchwiz 3.0 + ICS wouldn't run well on 512MB of RAM.
Damn, I suppose there isn't an easy(ish) way to get anything newer than gingerbread on it.

comes in .apk right?
I dlled it from xda, installed it, tried to temporary root, but all it did was make the thing a bit slow, and make it vibrate in a "one, one two" kind of tone.
Then tried to permanently root it, and still didn't work.
dass, you tried this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424358
z4root doesn't work for all phones. You're best searching your phone model along with root in google

I found the buttons to be a bit too small on the Ion, I tried gliding and such, I had to look down and press it to activate it...
It's still a pretty good phone.
I received a Micro SIM adapter in the post today, so I can use my contract Micro SIM in another phone if for some reason my S3 can't be used.
So I tested it in my HTC desire: No networks.
So I then tested it in my SE K510: Insert SIM.
And then I tested it in my SE V630: Emergency Calls Only.
I was puzzled and frustrated at why it wasn't registering the SIM.
When testing it in my mum's SE Z610, after fiddling with some settings I got it to work.
Can you guess what I did?
I switched 3G on.
For some retarded reason, in order to use a Three SIM, the phone must support 3G and have it enabled. (I always used to disable 3G to save battery life).
BaconReader updated to 2.2, yay.
Also it's on sale for $0.99, double yay!
