I still prefer having physical keys.. [editline]18th October 2012[/editline] or soft touch ones that is
That's what HTC's UX research has found, but apparently everyone wants to accidentally hit soft keys just to make sure that the soft keys rotate with the screen.
Am I the only person in the world who actually likes the menu button?
I don't understand why the hell software buttons are a good idea, they just waste screen space that could be used for something else, having the menu and back (touch) buttons slightly under the screen like the S2 and S3 is the most logical conclusion imo

Just ordered a Note II, Yet another phone to add to my phone collection :v:
Just ordered a Note II, Yet another phone to add to my phone collection :v:
Gratz! You will be pleased as hell.
For reference, the Note II has a cm^2/mAh of 37.16. a 5" 1080p display would need a battery of same voltage as the Note II and with a capacity of 2562.5 mAh. Judging by the Rezound and other devices, increasing resolution does not affect overall battery life as much as it would seem to be. Doing some quick and dirty calculations, the worst case scenario is that the display causes a 30% drop in overall runtime on 3G browsing. Going by GSMArena's testing, that would register as a 6 hour web browsing runtime. http://blog.gsmarena.com/samsung-galaxy-note-ii-battery-life-test-is-complete-here-are-the-results/ http://blog.gsmarena.com/htc-one-x-for-att-battery-test-is-over-see-if-it-outperformed-its-quad-core-sibling/ http://www.anandtech.com/show/5779/htc-one-x-for-att-review/3 I used Anandtech's tests on web browsing runtime because it's far better at testing display use, before the latest changes it was almost all display instead of hitting the baseband and SoC. Another thing worth noting is that the Rezound actually does better than the Sensation in WiFi browsing tests, so I'm going to guess that resolution is not as big a factor in battery drain as people make it out to be. So that would put it above the One XL, actually.....
Hooray for all your calculations. 6 hours of browsing is...well completely unacceptable but you did say that would be worst case scenario so I'll just have to see when it comes here.
I don't understand why the hell software buttons are a good idea, they just waste screen space that could be used for something else, having the menu and back (touch) buttons slightly under the screen like the S2 and S3 is the most logical conclusion imo
Atleast with on-screen buttons, you could disable them in fullscreen, like when watching videos, and you'd have an even bigger screen, or even customize the icons and colors of the buttons.
A proper implementation is to have a slightly longer screen to accommodate those buttons. Physical buttons are wasting just as much space.
how are the S3's buttons wasting screen space
A proper implementation is to have a slightly longer screen to accommodate those buttons. Physical buttons are wasting just as much space.
So would they alter the resolution to keep them on screen all the time? For example... (1280+Y)x720 with Y being the width of the softkeys going from the bottom of that part of the screen to where the usable display begins? [editline]18th October 2012[/editline]
how are the S3's buttons wasting screen space
I think he means wasting physical space.
They are taking up space which could be used to either have a larger screen, or a shorter phone. Objectively they are no different from software buttons, apart from the fact software buttons can hide themselves to give you more screen real estate to play with.
But then the design of the phone wouldn't be symmetrical and would look weird as shit whilst offering the same user experience. Also surely software buttons can't hide themselves or you run the risk of getting locked into an application with no way of exiting.
is hexxehs app slow or is it just me? might have something to do with the API, idk
But then the design of the phone wouldn't be symmetrical and would look weird as shit whilst offering the same user experience. Also surely software buttons can't hide themselves or you run the risk of getting locked into an application with no way of exiting.
This is a problem I've run into when using the Galaxy Nexus. If an app isn't cooperating and the OS doesn't want to cooperate either the home button will refuse to work and I just end up pulling the battery because rebooting the phone will be faster than waiting to see if the phone starts responding again. It doesn't occur much, but it's still a problem. [editline]18th October 2012[/editline] Also this could probably happen with softkeys and the home button on the Galaxy S phones too, but I'm not sure since the home software button to me has always been a way to just get back to the launcher when an app won't respond. I've never really encountered a time where the home button didn't work on my S or S II.
I'm sure you could very easily recess the front camera module and various sensors into the device slightly and have a 5mm bezel on the top and bottom. Also, what about video players on android, you tap the display and the GUI appears, tap again and its gone, that's the kind of application that would take advantage of software buttons.
So it's only useful with video players, books/comic readers and I can't think of anything else that doesn't require a user input. Unless it was a multi touch thing where you use I dunno three fingers to bring it up. But it just seems completely unnecessary when you could just have buttons and still do everything while maintaining a 720p resolution instead of giving screen sizes an even greater fracture by having to accommodate those extra 28 pixels. Buttons are cool.
but guys....
is hexxehs app slow or is it just me? might have something to do with the API, idk

is hexxehs app slow or is it just me? might have something to do with the API, idk
Yeah, it's because Hexxeh's app is a hacked version of overv's. Geel9 is working on his app again; give it a try (it's on the Play Store).
Its default behavior in those apps anyway, tap on an image in the gallery, the actionbar and status bar vanish, its nothing new to the user.
No yeah but if only those apps are gonna do it whats the point.
How is it that browsing FP makes your phone hotter than other content heavy sites? FP made my SGSII really hot, hotter than any games ever made it.
Could be a lot of gifs
Or because the home page alone is ~2000 lines of absolutely fucking horrible HTML code, the CSS is a convoluted mess and its running Javascript in the background constantly.
who do we blame?
I don't know about anyone else, but I frequently use my Galaxy Nexus upside down in landscape mode, and love having the buttons on the other side! Plus, having used a friend's Nexus S recently, it made me realise why Google want to get rid of hidden menus. It's just awful having to guess whether or not there may be a menu, in comparison to having a visually displayed overflow icon (or a menu button magically appearing for shitty apps). The only thing I need the full screen for is videos, and the buttons tuck away nicely for that. And one thing that I never see mentioned: On-screen buttons provide visual feedback, something capacitive buttons rarely do, whilst providing the same haptic feedback. This especially helps wire the brain for deadzones, or help you understand that you hit a wrong key if you've got your phone on a weird angle.
Hexxeh's app. [thumb]http://www.imgur.com/2jiN5.png[/thumb] Geel's app. [thumb]http://www.imgur.com/tEcrh.png[/thumb] [editline]18th October 2012[/editline] Thank you Geel :)
Hexxeh's app. [editline]18th October 2012[/editline] Thank you Geel :)
You have one unread voicemail fyi
You have one unread voicemail fyi
Yeah... I listened to that about 3 days ago and never deleted it. The icons been bothering me, but I can't find a time that would be appropriate to clear it.
So since Overv pulled an Overv I decided to work on my FP app again. I switched to Hexxeh's API (for the second time), and migrated over to more ICS-ish standards. Unfortunately, the Action Bar isn't available in sub-3.0 systems. However, I found an amazing library called ActionBarSherlock that adds it in. I improved the thread view; I got rid of those shitty boxes around posts. You'll notice it looks a lot like Overv's app. ICS guidelines do that. Oh also I fixed the "won't load images/avatars even on 3G" bug. And I improved support for 2.1/2.2/2.3.
why are you using the dark overflow and up icon and why do the action icons have an outline /picky sexy app though
Not even picky, those are valid UI annoyances. Also, since you're the person making really pretty UI concepts.. got any suggestions for geel regarding this? IMO all the thread views (both tablet and phone) could use some changes, I just can't make up my mind on what it could be like. [editline]18th October 2012[/editline] Also, did you have a blog about the UI concepts anywhere or is my mind playing tricks on me? I don't have it bookmarked if you did :C
why are you using the dark overflow and up icon and why do the action icons have an outline /picky sexy app though
I actually like them... I think it defines them better.

The have an outline because I couldn't find the non-outline versions. Also I didn't know you could make the overflow and up icons light. Fixing that now.
You shouldn't use an app at all if you're not the person to 'take risks'. What makes Hexxeh any different from Overv, huh?
Well, first of all, Hexxeh is a mod. Secondly, his API is personally vetted by Garry, and in fact, Garry trusted him enough to give him a secret IP spoofing method so that users of his API would have their own IP address pass through. Finally, Hexxeh has some kind of working relationship with Google, so if he went rogue, Garry would probably report to Google that he can't be trusted.
