Why are apple products so expensive? Just thinking laptops now.

Yes I know, I just hate it when people act like Steve Jobs wasn't actually a greedy as fuck CEO like the rest.

I have no reason to believe that Steve Jobs himself wasn't an asshole, at least at times. There's enough first-hand evidence to support that claim.
To address the OP again, quite frankly, because Apple can.
Their complete hardware build is proprietary, even if the components are not, and the software is proprietary. Aside from simply being able to optimize their entire ecosystem to perfection without worrying about user fiddling, they currently command the greatest brand recognition the corporate world has EVER SEEN. They can absolutely get away with charging a premium for the name, because the Apple name and service is worth a premium to customers.
Now, why upgrades to a build on the Apple site are marked up 400%? Aside from the probably negligible optimizations OSX might have for these setups, I have no fucking clue why they can get away with it. Chances are, it probably pushes the distribution of the bulk of their purchases to the base model, simplifying support and allowing them to save money on service representatives.
i have been using windows computers for around 7 years and a little bit of macbook here and there and i have to agree, 99% of windows trackpads are absolute rubbish. mbp/mba's trackpads are still the gold standard.
I got an Imac with trackpad today and oh my god, it's like sex for my fingers.
Plus I get to feel futuristic.

I find the trackpad annoying, but it's just personal preference I guess.

Well, it was second-hand so I didn't have an option. But even if I did, I'd still get the trackpad. The macs at my school have Magic Mice and those things are too small for me to use comfortably.
My father has refused to use a normal mouse with any of his laptops going all the way back to his original PowerBook. I was puzzling for months over the perfect gift for him, but then it hit me: The Magic Trackpad or whatever it's called. I'm going out to a local Apple Dealer to get one for him in a couple days. Spending the last of my paycheck on it, but I know he will love it. Apple trackpads are just great. I only ever used mice with my MacBook Pro because you can't left and right click at the same time on an Apple trackpad, something necessary for GMod and a few other games. But I was able to beat Portal and Portal 2 using it with above average times. Seriously, why does nobody else have anything even close to Apple's trackpads? Just something that is nice to use so I don't have to get blisters on my finger from using those damned nubs.
1) most windows trackpads on laptops are very small and awkward to scroll/use.
2) most windows trackpads aren't just that smooth as mba/mbp trackpads.
I usually disregard the multi touch on windows laptops as they're horrible to use. It's like a last minute thought with Windows laptops whilst with Macbooks it's fundamental for controlling the OS
i've had so many problems with trackpads on Windows machines.
Sensitivity, drivers, accuracy, tactility. Macs have it down pretty well
Microsoft seems to have imposed some requirements with Windows 8. I really hope they improve the trackpad experience substatially. I have no problems with the trackpad I have now, and it's precise (and even then, if I had to do precision work I'd use a mouse) and responsive enough, but the little extra wouldn't be bad.
Well what I notice between Macbooks and Windows laptops is the difference in trackpad size. That alone leads to some better overall user experiences
Granted on the Windows side that's up to the manufacturer but sometimes the trackpads are so tiny!
