I thought the panels were the same, I might be wrong though
There's a picture somewhere showing the way the pixels and backlighting are setup, I can't find it.

The only Apple monitor comparable to Dell's newest professonial U3011 is the Apple 27" Cinema Display and it's still considerably worse, but it is also $500 cheaper, oddly enough.

It looks like the U3011 is actually the single best LCD you can buy right now. It has the second widest gamut but is slightly more accurate than the legendary HP ZR30w.

I'd never buy an apple display (or dell) for graphic work, if I had the money i'd get an NEC LCD2490WUXi2. Great display. or http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-lacie-324i-24-inch-monitor-with-hood-and-software/p1522982
Alright but that would be a rather ignorant purchase.
Also,

Terrible.
That's why i'm saying i'd never buy a super-glossy display

All professional-grade Dell displays are matte.

Not all

The only glossy Dell display I know of is the SP2208WFP, which isn't a professional-grade monitor by any means.
2x23.6" 1920x1080 - the sweet spot for programming / mapping, modelling, and making textures
I was lucky enough to get a Hazro HZ30W which is pretty much just a 3007WFP panel in a aluminium case. Much more sturdy and doesn't suffer from noticeable input lag the 3008WFP did
Should have gotten this: http://accessories.dell.com/sna/products/Monitors_Flat_Panel_Widescreen/productdetail.aspx?c=ca&l=en&s=dhs&cs=cadhs1&sku=224-9949&~ck=baynoteSearch&baynote_bnrank=4&baynote_irrank=0

Programming, yes. Stretching a model or texture over two screens is pretty much the best way to fuck up your work flow ever, unless you're simply throwing applet windows onto another workspace.
I would much rather buy several 24" monitors.
As for modelling/texturing, as someone who does both I would normally simply put the modelling window on only one screen and disable the other screens until I need to use them. Power-saving, but also computer resource saving. I think.
I might buy a U2410 soon
I'd love a 30'' but can't really justify the asking price of over a grand :(
