There are commands to stop that from happening but it's best to have a 1-2GB VRAM card anyway.
But the only time you need >1GB is when you're running at 1920x1080 or above. Any lower and 1GB (should) give you enough to max it.

Well if its your first computer it should take about half an hour to build it. Maybe longer if youre nevous.
