Salvaged this drive cage from an old DL380 G6, turning it into a NAS. Just need one of these and a custom wiring harness for that 10-pin. Managed to snag some 300GB drives to go in there, should end up with about 1.5TB in RAID5 for <$200

When BOINC is life and shipping on cheap ram and another Xeon L5640 takes a month.
what do you guys think of proxmox vs esxi. ive been using esxi for a few years now and just now found proxmox.
hey dudes I just got a Sun Netra x4270 with 2 xeon 5518s, 16gb ddr3 and 4x 300gb 10k SAS drives.
Last server I played with was a power edge 2800 that heated my apartment on its own during the winter.
Currently trying to crash course on its raid controller to figure out how to get this shit rolling.
Anyone here got tips on noise reduction?

If you can't place it somewhere where you can't hear it you can always go Linus-way and make a custom top cover with bigger and quieter intake fans.
Finally got everything I needed. LSI 9211-8i in an old PC, and eight 300GB 10k SAS drives from an old ProLiant DL380 G6. Custom power cable to get the 10-pin from the array into a molex connector. Got eight more drives on standby for when the failures eventually roll around.

I've been using Proxmox at home for a long now and loved it. After you disable the crappy popups and get the update repository to go to the free version, it's good.
Recently been using ESX at work. ESX seems like it may be able to handle Windows resources better, but for a Linux environment it seems Proxmox is faster.

I bought this baby on ebay. I wanted to move away from using my pc for media storage. So I bought it for $35 and shipping was $40. I was suprised when it arrive a whole week ahead of time. I received it 2 days after buying it. So I'm super stoked.
Anyways stuck in some seagate drives and installed windows server 2012 r2.
Now I'm beginning to remove some heat spreaders from some various brands of old memory. Which I had left over from (2u) DL380 G5 I owned and sold. All the sticks are 1gb while the ones that came with the machine are 4gb. And some time in the coming days I plan to buy some better and quieter fans so I can stick it in my closet instead of sticking it in my basement.
Damn looks like my phone was a bit out of focus.

I thought with ZFS hardware raid was a bad idea. Are you using passthrough?

Older hardware RAID cards flashed with HBA firmware is usually the most cost effective option for adding dozens of S-ata ports.
This thread always keeps disappearing from my "Read" list...
I got my servers / home network all settled in a new house. Got a freebie fixed-wireless internet connection from work (ISP) that can hit about 80/80 with a /30 static IP and about 3-8ms of latency before it hits fiber. I ran CAT5e to the parts of the house that need it and terminated them into a nifty, large surface mount box I got from Amazon.

I'm still using the same custom built Windows Server 2012R2 box for my VM box.

My FreeNAS is working like a champ, it's also doing my Plex server in a jail and seems to be handling all of my local direct play stuff, with a bit of transcoding to a few friends that have remote access.

That's not really about the server hardware but I don't think there is a better thread for that...
I've got promoted to Lead Network/System Administrator position due to previous guy leaving to work for other company. I'm not sure if I'm excited or scared because now I am the one who makes a lot of critical decisions. :v:

This is what two simultaneous UCS Fabric Interconnect failures looks like. Always remember to take full-state backups, kids.
Ouch

Running new cable today. I'd put my desk in the datacenter if I could, then nobody would bother me.
Beautiful guys thanks for making my thread awesome
i fell like this is probably a great thread to post this in. For those interested in network/security certification, humble bundle has books right now. https://www.humblebundle.com/books/network-security-certification-books

This would be great if they had the MCSA to Server 2016 instead :disappoint:

FWIW out of our clients the vast majority are on Server 2012, we only have like two on 2016 and a few still on 2008 R2. Plus one on Small Business Server 2011 and one running NAS version of WS.

Sure, for now at least. 2012 is going to fall off the support cycle next January: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/search/1163
We're already using 2016 moving forward with all our systems and upgrading 2012 R2 to 2016 when possible. Getting 2016 certified now keeps you ahead of the curve.

Its currently too cold in my garage to keep my stuff on my rack so heres my FreeNAS box and my ESXi host snuggled up in the art studio.
I see that spare ProCurve. You should just throw it away because... ProCurve.
Finally got some money to make my (very) old PC usable as my new NAS. Mounting raid 1 array from my old qnap box was surprisingly easy. (thank god they use non-modifed mdadm)
Now it's time to buy some HDD's (I have filled 3TB quite a while ago :v:)and get sas cables for my hba board.

Oh and docker is the shit, it's my first time using it and I love it. I know it's not really how it supposed to be used but I really like the idea of not installing tons of software into the base os.

Any lightweight and simple to install yet relatively user friendly Docker management interfaces around?
Looking into re-purposing a mini-itx dualcore Intel Atom board + Chinesium Picu-PSU clone I have collecting dust as a sort of "stacks of Raspberry pi's/SoC board's" alternative.

I use portainer. Jut run following command and you can start using it by opening http://nas_ip:9000 in your browser.
docker run -d -p 9000:9000 --restart always -v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock -v /opt/portainer:/data portainer/portainer
I fought with my trash 1800 for a week before I just went and bought a pair of tp link switches that can actually handle dot1q.
I'm turning an old desktop into a NAS and I'm looking for a PCI RAID controller that supports RAID 5.
This is all I can find: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816124028&ignorebbr=1&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-PC&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-PC-_-pla-_-Hard+Drive+Controllers+%2F+RAID+Cards-_-N82E16816124028&gclid=Cj0KCQiA7dHSBRDEARIsAJhAHwjZp8p7gF86HGZXbpAgtZaFfss-cs1n5VopeblvHHaM-wX2QG5gD88aAgfWEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
Is anyone else aware of one that can support 4-6 drives and RAID 5? All I'm seeing on Amazon are sata controllers that only support RAID 1 and 0 through the motherboard. If not I'll probably just buy this one.
