Again, no idea if there's cheap ones, but there's definitely also Xeon-D boards with that many SAS/SATA connections. (Avoton and Xeon-D both only support 6 on-chip, but there's boards with additional controllers)
People really overvalue items on Craigslist in south PA. $900 for an unbranded rack cage covered in scuffs. Poweredge 2900 with dual 5355 4gb ram for $450.

So what's the go-to second-hand S-ata RAID card to reflash as a HBA nowadays? I know it used to be HP or Dell branded LSI cards a few years back. But I both can't remember the specific models, and time's probably changed so there's a new card on the block for those of us who prefer software RAID on the cheap. Got a spare full-size PCI-express x16 slot, so bandwidth nor physical size of the card isn't the problem. I can JUST live with the card providing 4 S-ata ports, but would prefer one that can provide 8. I don't care if it requires backplane adapter cables as they can be acquired fairly cheaply, as long as all the ports are internal.

Although Dell H310 can also be given the same treatment, along with IBM M1015 cards. They're supposedly all Sata/SAS 6Gb/s cards and should not be "limited" to 2TB harddrives.
What's this about
Just a box I thought this thread might be interested in. It's an IBM S812LC (aka Tyan TN71-BP012). 1 socket, 10 core POWER8 box with 512GB DDR3 (Which I now realise did not get into the screenshot, dammit), and more memory bandwidth than you can shake a stick at.
why is there 80 numbers then
Note the POWER8 part. It's 8 threads per core.
POWER8 is designed to be a massively multithreaded chip, with each of its cores capable of handling eight hardware threads simultaneously

why is there 80 numbers then
Power8 is SMT8. 8 threads per core, configurable. I actually run it at SMT4 but that's less impressive for the screenshot.
Home media server, NAS + light transcoding for media streaming + whatever else I can use it for in the future Boots off of a 120gb SSD and has 2x4TB drives in RAID1 using mdadm with plans to expand (Possibly a move over to ZFS? RAID10? Undecided as of yet) Accessed either via Kodi using the samba share or Plex for Android/other devices
[t]https://helifreak.duckdns.org/image/20160806050645739.png[/t] Comes to $16 / month.

[editline]6th August 2016[/editline] Yeah it's Open VZ but... Even the premium is Open VZ.
It says it's KVM, not OVZ. I'd say the catch is they're just overloaded and that the 10G is a technicality. I've seen hosts offer 10G. The host machine is 10G, but the VM only gets 1G. But it's tehnically 10G. So watch out for that one too, I hate that one.
All I want is 60-100GB of disk, 4GB of ram and 2 cores and at least 100mbit and it to not be over provisioned. How hard can it be to find a VPS or even a matter of fact a dedicated server(I'm still eyeing up that Phenom whenever it comes back in stock.) for under $20?
That's kinda one thing I hate with VPS hosts lately. Everyone's gone SSD, which is great. But sometimes you just want a fuckton of drive space. It's getting harder and harder to find. Vultr and DigitalOcean both offer decent storage instances but neither operate them in a region that I want them in (Or are fucking expensive, see: DigitalOcean volumes). It's why I've just said fuck it and resorted to just getting my own servers.
SSDs is great but I really don't need that I/O performance and it gets steep if you need any real storage. I should of also mentioned. US. Not EU.
Yeah, like that Power8 box I posted earlier. Has 6TB of storage, it's not super fast but it does all it needs to. And It has 256GB of SSD in it too, anyway. I could never even get close to that on any VPS host without paying a metric fuckton.
But the Power8 box is for special things that go beyond hosting a web server, FTP and a game server or two every now and then. Like you're using that for some serious things.
Well yeah, absolutely but the thing is I can actually get storage on it. It doesn't need to be a super expensive box (Not that it is. It's spectacular value for what you get) for that. I'd rather pay $400 once for a 6TB drive than pay $600 monthly on DigitalOcean.

Also, look for DDoS, Online.net will cancel your server as soon as you get TWO significant (for them) hits. Happened to me a few years ago.
No, they'll sell to anyone. Never gotten DDoS'd, so I wouldn't know about that. They offer various kinds of DDoS protection now (lowest level included by default).

Admiral on Deck So after some renovating here and there, Kuznetsov is back in action. [IMG_thumb]https://i.imgur.com/n4o1sjG.jpg[/IMG_thumb] Although the renovating isn't done and the Admiral has seen better living quarters it's back for now. Gonna have to keep an eye on it and if things get too hot it's back to the box. [IMG_thumb]https://i.imgur.com/CNyIXCA.jpg[/IMG_thumb] Once I get some dosh going I'm gonna buy a rack with a power backup and a switch to give it a good home. At least I got my VM lab back now.
Is there any somewhat affordable 48~ volt DC input power supplies with standard ATX connectors on the market beyond the SuperMicro PWS-0061 ? Would be great to skip a inverter output stage for efficiency, although I'd have to come up with a UPS-like charger for four 12volt lead-acids in series.
This thread needs more content. Bumping with a picture of the final revision for my CCNA lab... added WIC-2T's for WAN stuff and a switched PDU so I can power everything up/down from anywhere. The 1841 at the top and the 2950 at the bottom are not part of the lab, but are used for the management vlan that's configured on the gear. I'll add a topology map later for those interested. [t]http://i.imgur.com/8GiaMnv.jpg[/t] Topology: [t]http://i.imgur.com/Jsfbs2e.png[/t]
Passed the CCNA, finally. Anyone want to buy a lab?
If I wasn't just about to move to a small room rented in a house I would.
Passed the CCNA, finally. Anyone want to buy a lab?
I bid 2 snickers and a milky way bar. I'll throw in a king size Twix for shipping.
