so I ended up getting a DAS (sa120) for my server a month ago (instead of going for a dedicated NAS)
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/QQaFch6.jpg[/img_thumb]
right now it just has 2 x 2tb (and one old 250GB drive so I could mess with pooling), gonna probably start using 5tb drives when I need more capacity
running omv, using snapraid for parity (two data, one parity) and mergerfs for pooling
also working on a grafana dashboard, I'm probably going to be tweaking and adding to it indefinitely
Define 'cloud cluster'. AWS has a ton of services, which one(s) do you want to replicate?
(The closest thing to the full package would be OpenStack. But you really don't want to use that unless you're managing pretty huge infrastructure.)
any reason not to use OpenStack in a pretty tiny infrastructure? too much overhead usage?

Dunno about resource consumption, but do you really want that much complexity for just a handful of boxes?

Please tell me those are all Delta's cranked to 100%
They're Deltas, but they're much quieter. I rigged it so that I can run them normally at 12v or burst at 20v which doubles the CFM.
Sun Enterprise 3000 (without wheels) is 25.5" tall
Free rack space is 24".
;_;
I'm pretty sure I posted my box in here before, not sure though

Sitting bottom left, it's screen is 2nd from the left.

It runs a lot of bots, my shitty website, and a few game servers.
It runs other shit that I honestly don't remember what, since it's automated and I don't even use it.
Have you done a test run with that helmet yet?
Have you done a test run with that helmet yet?
Oh shit someone remembered lol
Nah, I only got one, don't wanna fuck it up. If I had a second one I'd do it.
Just gotta have enough faith in it for a live run
I'm not sure if this is the right thread to ask it in, but I can't seem to find anything on this issue. So I'm at work, monitering our customers servers, so we got this customer's APP server with does backups every day 3:00 AM, well the thing is that: The next scheduled backup is a date that's already pasted, and making "on-the-spot" backups works just fine.
We "fixed" this issue by restarting the server but it eventually comes back, and right now there hasn't been a schedueled backup in a couple of days (we've made manual ones incase). Here's a screenshot of it, it's in swedish but it should still get across what I mean.

So basically all backups that have been done, manually or not has succeded, but it's still lagging behind. We don't get any errors or anything, and I'm personally more experienced with UNIX-based servers so I'm drawing a blank.
Fat chance at this but a friend gave me a Dell powerconnect 2716 because the power doesn't work. Apparently the caps and fuse going bad is pretty common with the psu. The model is a delta apd-40vp. Any chance someone has someone might have one of these things I could buy from? I have zero experience in soldering and I can't find a whole replacement online.

Soldering is super easy, practice by taking out the bad caps. Once you get it out, it's literally the same putting them in. Just add a little bit of new solder.
helmetMaster will always be remembered as the box that got me interested in dedicated servers.

However I now have a new toy.

:excited:
How the hell do you folks where the back of the rack is inaccessible manage to deal with things like cable organization and routing? This setup I've been working on for several months now is a bitch to get everything routed in such a way I can pull devices out and things won't unplug or be yanked form sockets.
Free heresy!

The fan runs at 9v and surprisingly does a good job to get rid of all the excessive heat. I'm actually turning the fan down a bit more once it gets colder outside so I have warm clothes in the morning.

Taking the side off can be an option.
Taking the side off can be an option.
It's like a row of 3 iirc so you're kinda fucked in the middle or one side of each end one.
It's like a row of 3 iirc so you're kinda fucked in the middle or one side of each end one.
Yeah I only have access from one side. Stuff at the other end is pretty much inaccessible unless you completely remove devices.

You see that Sun Enterprise 3000 way the fuck down at the end? That thing is NOT FUN to reach the main power switch.
So apparently you can't use "System X" hdd's in IBM Storwize. You need to buy "System Storage" hdd's. The only difference is different hot swap tray and different metadata in hdd firmware. So we have 20 replacement 1.2tb drives which we can't use because of a fucking model-lock. :suicide:
Time for firmware flashing!
i found a bunch of shitty switches from 2004

now if only they were worth more than $20 a piece
I wouldn't advise using those Netgear hubs. Every now and then the firmware bugs out and floods your network with broadcasts.
I'm looking into getting a "beginner" server, meaning relatively low cost, easy to find parts, etc. Any of the more experienced people have suggestions? I'll most likely be running a couple of websites and maybe a game server or two.

Dell R710 is what I started out with, it's pretty good

look at dells rX10(310,510,610,710) servers or the dl360/dl380 g6/g7
I personally have an r710
r/homelab has a good wiki if you want to read up on how to get started

Completed installation of all electrical hookups and load testing.

The load is unbalanced. I need to move a few devices over to the other half of the phase. I'll rewire Rack 3 and 4 when I begin installing the network cabling.

It's a bit late, but if you don't mind paying for shipping, parts and an hour of my time, I can recap the unit for you. You'd probably want to disassemble the unit and just send the power board and main PCB to reduce shipping costs.
I can replace them with quality electrolytic caps or more expensive polymer types if you expect to have it in service for an extended period of time.
My 'server' is just a cheap ass vps ($1usd a month), works well enough for my needs (hosting my site and irc bot). A few people have 'accounts' on it where they host some content as well.

40GB of storage, and 2TB bandwidth per month
I picked up a precision with 64gb RAM and an 8 core 2.6ghz xeon for $700
