• Why Do You Use Linux

I fix computers as a side-job and a hobby, and I run portable applications from my USB stick while the PC I'm fixing is booted into ERD Commander 2008 (Windows LiveCD) and most of my apps work for scanning. I am curious if there are any Linux LiveCDs that have WINE built-in, to help me along. I'd prefer a light-weight distro if possible, and I just need a name, not links.

SLAX, I think.
Install your distro of choice to a USB drive? Then put wine on it?
Most of the computers I fix aren't USB bootable, so I'd like an ISO if possible.
People saying that kind of shallow, trite, and elitist crap tells me to steer clear of insular communities. Anyone who isn't interested in computers is likely to be more interested in what they want to do on a computer than the computer itself. It's perfectly understandable that some may not to want to get bogged down with the details because they've spent a lifetime working in a profession or similarly learning and find the prospect of plumbing a computer a similarly daunting task. You'll find people have interests and follow them to the same extent we do. Obviously if something is never mentioned then it won't be considered. Saying "type in firefox to open firefox" may be enough for some, even if it wooshes over what "firefox" actually means in a shell because that's something different from what they want to do. But when something is able to fit in concept in a mind - like a Start menu of program folders - then the details start to fit in.
I disagree to a extent. A computer is not an hobby, a computer is a tool. Yes it can be used to extend hobbies but the computer itself is a means to an end. It IS retarded to expect people to be able to compile their kernel from scratch and write some BASH scripts etc. BUT I even computer illiterates can gain enough to get by. And get by I mean something as simple as know what a program, what makes up your operating system, what a browser is. Simple Stuff. I couldn't take apart my food processor, but I still know how to change the fuse in the plug if it goes. And I would lol at anyone who had to call in a $120 electrician because they hadn't taken the time to figure it out.
I use it because it gives me the possibility to do *almost* anything with my PC

That type of information doesn't necessarily pop up, say, in Windows on first boot. For the user the start menu and the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop it is; regardless of underlying implementation that is it. Knowing what the fuse does isn't necessarily basic if you intend to learn about electricity but basic as it is practical. There is a difference. But I have to make this argument independent of what I expect someone to know, and you're making it based on the fact that the simple stuff is general, applicable anywhere, and counts as basic. But IMO it's information needed should anyone want to take up the computer as an intellectual pursuit as opposed to a user who wants to use the Word and view the YouTube.
Free as in free beer and because defraggler decided to defrag system32
Free as in free beer and because defraggler decided to defrag system32
What's wrong with defragging system32?
It decided to delete some nessacery drivers while it was defragging it
Defragging doesn't delete files like that.
Defragging doesn't delete files at all

Usually if someone is given a tool and they do not know how to use it, it is considered the persons fault. Whereas if a person does not know how to use a piece of software it is considered the software's fault. Yes, there is such a thing as thoroughly obscure programming but there has to be a line where you have to turn round to people and tell them to read a fucking book. A computer is a complex piece of kit and I think there's nothing wrong with requiring people to learn something about it. I own a car, I don't want to be a mechanic, but I still need a license to drive it.
God damn, I'm glad I'm not a Windows user anymore. I got tired of fixing this shit on my own computers.
That's more of a ID10T error, than a windows error. You're the type of person that's giving Linux & similar a bad name :colbert:

I'm simply saying there is a reason why we shouldn't call people idiots simply because XYZ happened, in turn, because they know nothing.

Free beer. I use it to take care of viruses, and keep old computers running without needing to upgrade them to meet the minimum requirements of windows.
makefile override. [editline]09:45PM[/editline] even though I have no idea how it works yet
You're the type of person that has to put others down to feel superior, and that's just sad.
Holy shit, like you don't do the same to windows users.
Holy shit, like you don't do the same to windows users.
I bash Windows and Microsoft, but not it's users. Now stop this trolling nonsense. We are here to drink beer and be merry.
