Old photo back from the day when it was acting as a ESXi host but you get the idea
Inspiron 530, Q6600, 4GB DDR2, and a 1TB WD Caviar Green. All running Debian Lenny x64. Used for backups (SAMBA and RSYNC), emergency PXE boot (requires some router reconfiguration to do, but it's there), streaming shit to my PS3 using Mediatomb, acting as a CUPS server, as a folding@home machine, and also used as a gameserver host.
I occasionally rip out the Caviar Green and shove in a Seagate 80gb with Windows Server 2008 installed for event colocation (LAN parties)

Sure, let me just go find a 3rd power-supply.

How does that program work? Are those VM's run on that computer, or on other computers?

I can run crysis with less power supplies and fans than that. What's going on here.

This may or may not be a thin client running as a fileserver, printer server and pornget. Fun fact: the mobo and CPU eat only like 4W of power.

Oracle can suck my sweaty balls.
They're also the reason the OpenSolaris project is dead.
Not if oracle has anything to say about it
It's GPL. It's free forever. If you feel uncertain about the project's future in Oracle's hands (like most of us do), just fork it.

They run on that computer you're taking the screenshot from? Is that not your main? Or is that a dedicated server box running Windows 7?

Nice post count :v:
And why would you need a VM running FreeNAS when you could just access the drives from windows (or share them with windows).
When i'm getting my EVGA SR2 build i'm gonna use a Rampage II Extreme for my server with 6x 3TB HDD's.
Anyway, my server consists of a P4@3.2 GHz, 1GB ram and a 40GB IDE HDD, running Arch. Just for hosting my own images and stuff.
My server will mainly be a game server(s) and a fileserver when I am at LAN.

you know, I've never seen a transmeta processor in anything more than an ultra-low power notebook.

Old Gateway machine. 2.8 Ghz Celeron and 1GB DDR 333Mhz.
6x 500GB SATA drives:
4 are on one controller in a RAID 0+1 array (1TB total)
2 are on a separate controller in a RAID 0 array (1TB total) -- I removed the drives for now since they just take up space in the case (and waste power) and I'm nowhere near filling up the other array.
Right now it's running Windows XP Pro since I can't find Linux drivers for the RAID controllers.
I hardly use this thing since I now have 2 1TB drives in my main rig (RAID 0) and I'm only using about 350GB of that. I have way too much excess storage at my disposal. I guess I'd better get to downloading.
[editline]18th November 2010[/editline]
all of the 500GB drives were free.
all of the 500GB drives were free.
Free storage is always good.
These have been around for quite a while now but for those looking for an affordable RAID controller with an 8 SATA disk capacity and hardware XOR check out the Dell PERC 5/i and PERC 6/i. http://www.overclock.net/raid-controllers-software/359025-perc-5-i-raid-card-tips.html
You can get these off ebay for a steal, usually between $100-$250 USD.Got my 5/i a couple years ago and my only regret is not getting one sooner, once you try something with hardware XOR you'll never want to go back.

Because they don't exsist, I can make virtual 2gb hard drives that take up like 5megs on disk(assuming drives are empty) this is mostly for testing purposes
Going to setup my old E6600 machine with iRedOS today (It's CentOS 5.5 + iRedMail).
If I can't get mail working with that, I'll give up on the idea of @nikomo.eu

My uncle works in the IT dept. of some company and they were getting rid of some old servers and they were about to pay a company to destroy all the data. He offered to do it for free if he could keep the drives. He gave me 8 but two didn't work. The drives are Hitachi Deskstars from about 4 years ago. They're louder than normal and take a little while to spin up to full speed, but hey, they were free.

Fuck me I was in the server room in the new wing at my college yesterday I should have taken a picture. Except their wasn't any servers in it yet just a big fiber to the main server and a shitton of cat 5 lines running to the other rooms. Maybe I can sneak in with my teacher again (he's an admin).

My sister may be moving out soon and she may leave her desktop, defiantly going to make it a backup/download box. And add her monitor to my collection on my main rig.
