Last time I used linux it wouldn't run .EXE files so how do you propose that the average IT guy install the drivers to an HP6v000, without using wine or the like?
That's why I said Linux is more user-friendly. You have no driver to install. It's probably already part of a module in your distro. Upon detecting the devices, it should load the module automagically. Same for other devices.
hahahaha. more user friendly my ass. having to make your own programs and use the command line is much less user friendly than clicking a simple .exe. there is also a huge lack of support. what if something does not work? call the linux help line?
The eighties called, they want their bullshit back. You don't have to make your own programs. You also do not have to use the command-line. If something doesn't work, yes, you call the Linux help line. Schools can go for a commercial distro or buy external support contracts. That's part of what you get for instance when you buy Red Hat.
Is it the same with wireless cards now?
It depends on the manufacturer. I hear Broadcom cards are awful when it comes down to Linux support, but my Intel 3945 worked out of the box on Ubuntu, as well as my ATI graphics card.
Our school used macs :saddowns: They crashed every five minutes (I'm not shitting you)
If they're these or anything older: [img_thumb]http://harryallen.info/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/imac-medres.jpg[/img_thumb] Then yeah, they're shit.
The only good macs that won't fuck up and crash are intel Macs. The PPC macs are shit. [editline]09:37AM[/editline]
It depends on the manufacturer. I hear Broadcom cards are awful when it comes down to Linux support, but my Intel 3945 worked out of the box on Ubuntu, as well as my ATI graphics card.
Ralink cards also have decent Linux support. (My desktop has a Ralink card built into the mobo and it works fine in Linux.)
OpenOffice can read and write to .doc just fine.
Not when I tried it. Something always messed up until I gave up and when back to MS Office.

could you imagine an old mac with the new PPC chip that's in the ps3?
could you imagine an old mac with the new PPC chip that's in the ps3?
You can run Linux on the "fat"* PS3s. I don't know what performance is like though; probably pretty fast. :v: *Fat as in the non-slim version that was just announced.
We have a few Macs, they have Citrix though so we can use Windows on them.
Linux is impractile because it is not user friendly, When someone needs to install a printer it is so much easier to just pop in the disk and run it than 7 steps for adding things. Most people use Windows, and schools get Windows linesences for about 10bux a OS so it really makes more sense to use it. And wine isn't compatible with everything. [editline]07:32PM[/editline] If you think that is all there is to school computers you are very wrong
dyslexic much
Plus, if they'res something they must have for windows that they don't have for linux, theres Wine.
Have fun trying to get a uncompatible program to start
.exe files are compiled binaries for Windows. They'll never natively work on Linux. :raise: Compiled binaries for Linux generally don't have a file extension. .rpm and .deb aren't what I'm talking about either, those are like .tar packages. Too lazy to quote your next post, but most printers do work with the Gutenprint driver package. http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_driver.cgi?driver=gutenprint See if your printer is on that site. Wifi is still kind of hit or miss, but getting better. Certain Broadcom chips work, and Atheros, Ralink, and Intel chips work. [editline]02:05AM[/editline] Back to printers. You still need to use Cups as far as I know, which I have no experience with.
and windows can do this all fine that is why school use it

Quad-core for the win. Plus, it's awesome to browse the internet in 1080p, especially with wireless keyboards and mice.
My entire city's school network got shut down for months because somebody planted a virus on it.
Because school computers are supposed to ready you for the real world, and unless you work as an open source dev, you're probably gonna be working with Windows.
Truuuuuuuuuuuuuth.

When I first downloaded it ran like crap, you just have to optimize it.
There's some form of linux you can use to get passwords from the administrator of the windows machines. use that, delete everything/put porn everywhere/get the password for someone you hate and put furry porn on it/DELETE EVERYONES USER ACCOUTNTS
This thread reminds me, I remember on my first day of Freshman year, we were in computer class. The teacher was teaching us about the basics of Windows. "Okie students, you know how to move that cool looking arrow on your monitor-" "TEeCHER WUTS A MONITUR?" "Oh a monitor is what displays everythin-" "TEECHR WUT DUS DISPLAI MEEN?" :ughh:
Because no one knows how to use it. I totally agree with you by the way.
That. So I guess you could try Fedora. :v: Or if you want to be really adventurous, you could try Gentoo. It supports PPC and PPC64, but I'm not sure if Cell is PPC64 or not...
my school uses linux
use that, delete everything/put porn everywhere/get the password for someone you hate and put furry porn on it/DELETE EVERYONES USER ACCOUTNTS
Doesn't work like that.
actually i lied. the slim clients we have use linux. but they're only used for email and library stuff.
They do that with Windows too. No competent tech leaves the OS that came with the machine on it.
Over here in england at least, schools buy "out of the box" network setups from companies like RM who come in and set everything up for them. The techs are utterly useless and I nearly got expelled for "hacking" (which involved making a shortcut to the teacher E:\ network drive which apparently is high level knowledge and I was told not to tell anyone how to do it).

Because you'll find that schools like my old one modify the fuck out of it until it's barely recognisable, crashes, deletes work and then they put you in detention for asking 'Why don't we get Windows?'. Also I believe schools recieve better support from Microsoft as it is being used in an educational or working enviroment.
Probably because people are much more familiar with windows. [editline]12:05PM[/editline]
Plus linux has a stigma around it anyway. People are reluctant to try it even if they don't know a single thing about it. Its very easy to use and I'm sure just about everyone here agrees with that. But if you asked the people that most of these schools have as their computer class teachers and such they'd probably tell you how impossible it is to use because they generally don't know shit.
It's easy depending on which one you get. Sabayon, for example, is piss easy as fuck.
In our school they had Windows 98 computers until 2007 because... 1:They were so slow and shit 2:They had 1000's of viruses and outdated AVG which was eating away at the Hard drive!! 3:Some didn't even log in!! 4:If you clicked shut down it would fuck up
