Anyone know a good ROM for the Captivate?
I'm currently using Serendipity
I would like something new.
MIUI?
MIUI?
I was thinking about that one
How is the battery life, and features compare to other ROMs
Samsung Galaxy S is easy to root and install custom roms, and thanks to Odin and Heimdall it's always possible to downgrade.
So you modded your Droid to look like an iPhone? :v:

I haven't tried it on the Captivate but it's pretty good on the Droid 1 so I'd say go for it, when it comes to actual features, it's just a few minor improvements and a nice UI along with it..
Nice thread, OP...
Damn, android needs a category of its own here...
PdaNet does this IIRC.
Except that's blocked too.
question: how dangerous is it to downgrade from Android 2.2 Version: 1.7* to 1.3* on a htc desire HD, is there a chance to brick it?
and is it possible to use a 512mb sdcard to make a goldcard?
Can android 2.2 phones be rooted, already?
Can android 2.2 phones be rooted, already?
Of course. Installing custom ROMs depends on the phone though.
Last week I traded in my trusty BlackBerry Bold 9000 for a Samsung Spica (i5700). I'm sitting on Samdroid 2.2.1 a9 right now and it's okay. The accelerometer is sometimes slow (Takes up to 3.5 seconds to rotate) and the audio feedback for Swype and the camera shutter sounds are too loud (The camera scares the shit out of me every time).
And I'm getting a Galaxy S II to replace my Spica. It was my first Android, but I'm getting sick of it's slowness even though it's already much faster than with stock firmware. (I'm running CM 6.1)
Of course. Installing custom ROMs depends on the phone though.
Well I got an HTC Wildfire... Do you know if I can install a ROM on it or should I check myself?
Both Universal Androot and SuperOneClick failed to root my phone.
Any ideas?
It's an ZTE Blade, came with 2.2.

I had to run Androot twice to get it to work. What gen is it?
Pretty sure it's Gen2, but not sure.
Any way to check?
[editline]3rd May 2011[/editline]
I just spammed Androot like 30 times. Didn't help.
Even tried unrooting but it failed to do that too.
When I try to root, it says it's already been rooted even though it didn't work.

VISIONary+ just rooted my device like a boss.
Now backing up the ROM.

Yeah, it's a bit annoying to have the interface being less smooth than my iPod Touch's, even though the CPU is faster... I'll probably end up getting a new phone at some point, though coming from a BlackBerry, even the Spica is one hell of an upgrade.
So you modded your Droid to look like an iPhone? :v:
It's not a Droid it's a Samsung Galaxy S.
It was mainly in protest of apple taking legal action against Samsung for being similar :v:

2.3.3 can be.
So PDANet now hides your data from your carrier, too bad you can only get it through the market, but not if you install it to a tablet! I'll get an APK up now.

Install that and the desktop app, and you should be able to USB tether for free. I don't think it does HTTPS as a limitation, but it's better than nothing, and it's masked.

It's the lack of hardware acceleration in the UI from what I've heard. 2.4 is supposed to have full UI hardware acceleration and Samsung is actually quite good with updates(people with custom SGS models argue otherwise) so expect the SGS2 and well, any phone getting 2.4 to be even faster than it is right now.
TBH roms like MIUI are much smoother than any apple devices.
Argh, this thread made me want to get the Captivate even more. Anything would be an upgrade from my fucking slow-ass iphone 3g. Unfortunately i'm stuck with AT&T and that seems to be the best phone they have beside the atrix which I won't/can't pay for.
Why can't you switch to a good carrier?
Well I got an HTC Wildfire... Do you know if I can install a ROM on it or should I check myself?
I think the 2.2 update for Wildfire locks the bootloader. You need some special hardware to downgrade it again to install ROMs.

Well that's what I thought myself... It came with 2.1 which could be rooted, but 2.2 can't, and I upgraded when I bought the phone as I didn't know that at the time...

Wait for the S2. It's leaps and bounds ahead of my SGS. I'm sure AT&T will get it at some point.
if i go through with cyanogen, can i completely back up my phone so that i dont lose music and contacts etc
if i go through with cyanogen, can i completely back up my phone so that i dont lose music and contacts etc
Cyanogen shouldn't wipe music. Your post is sort of hard to answer because contacts are system data while music isn't. When I installed CM7 I just backed up my apps/data with titanium backup and moved my contacts to the sim card. Then use titanium backup to restores apps and data and move your contacts back to the phone. Stuff like music, pictures, , video ect that's just stored on the SD/EXT SD shouldn't be deleted.

Because i'm on my parents plan (cheaper) and they are adamant in sticking with AT&T. They say that verizon (we had it for a while) gets bad service at our house which is true, but if I am correct it's because the phones they had were terrible, and had bad radios. Would this be a factor, or am I over-complicating things?

Sure, but my contract is up at the end of this month, and I have no idea how long I'd have to wait... :(

TBH even if there was perfect verizon reception at your house switching to CDMA is a huge downgrade. There's no way AT&T's HSPA is so bad that the speeds are lower than Verizon's CDMA network.
If it is then AT&T needs to do some modifications to their entire network infrastructure because that's really bad.
As for the S2. I know your upgrade is this month but you'll regret getting a phone like the atrix or LG 2X. The SGS2 is going to be the "want to have" device with the community support throughout 2011.

Contacts should sync with your google account, so you'll never lose them
After talking with PdaNet support, I managed to get my BlackBerry key exchanged for an Android key... Unfortunately, the phone isn't being detected at all (Windows doesn't play the "Hardware attached" sound when you connect it)... I might start from scratch again, I hopped between ROMs a lot over the past week, though Cyanogen mod 6.1.1-Spica-alpha8.4 plus some 3D drivers and whatnot seem to be a good combination.

I'm thinking about switching to Spicagenmod. How does it compare to CM6.1.1?
I'm thinking about switching to Spicagenmod. How does it compare to CM6.1.1?
I was on Spicagenmod for a bit, though I can't remember why I switched over to CM6.1.1. However, right now I'm using the YONIP Kernel V.12B and it's pretty snappy, even on the "Conservative" CPU governor. I also installed the LIBSQLITE update and a certain set of Intercept3D drivers (The LIBSQLITE update is on the YONIP page).
I feel like an idiot... I tried another MicroUSB cable I had laying around and my phone connects just fine!
Can anyone give me a step by step process of moving to cyanogen, or perhaps a link to one?
I have a motorola droid (the first one)
