that's about the only thing it does well, take up space.
proper file system my ass, I consider a "real OS" to be an operating that does what it is supposed to do and does it well, thus iOS is a "real OS" as it seeks to be different from other "complicated" and yet retains some power and provides a user-friendly tablet experience. I also consider Windows to be a "real OS" even though I don't like it but that's just me.
while I'm at it: Can someone please tell me why people feel the need to compare the specs of apple products compared to those of non apple products. take the Motorola Xoom for example; on paper a beast of a machine with a dual core 1ghz processor by nvidia, 1gb of ram and honeycomb. Compare that to the iPad 2 with it's A5 1ghz dual core system on a chip, and only 512Mb of ram, and iOS 4.3, yet the iPad maneges to do even the simplest of things with more than twice the speed of the Xoom. Take for example the orientation switching from landscape to portrait and back, the iPad is seemingly precognitive while the Xoom takes 2 seconds or more. the cameras on the iPad 2 suck when compared to the xoom's on paper, yet recorded video looks a lot better on the iPad with more vibrant colors and slightly more smooth playback. is it not possible that what apple skimps on in hardware, they make up for with software optimization and the end user experience?
Ever noticed how pictures made with the iPhone 4 looks so vivid and fantastic, while at the same time pictures from an N8 looks kinda boring, when the N8 has got a much better camera spec-wise?
It's called reality vs manipulation of reality. Ever noticed how you may not want your tablet to switch orientation all the fucking time you just barely tip it? I've tried that a billion times on every iOS devise, I've ever used, however it seems to be much less annoying on Android. That's a software decision, and a preference between users. And the twice as fast thing? What are you smoking, because I want to try it. Webpages are loading slightly faster on teh Xoom, on a nice 16:9 higher resolution screen than on the iPad. And do I even have to mention notifications? Widgets? Multitasking?
Why don't you guys let us buy our shittay ipads in peace, we don't need to know how tech-savvy and wise you guys are for buying android/window tablets. Maybe one day when we become smart as you guys, we'll join you okay.
also all the shittay inferior tablets were sold out at my local apple store today. EVERY FUCKING DAY.

Ok, let's dissect this:
Browsing: is a joke. No Flash means you're fucked out of experiencing the full web. Not to mention it's slow as shit compared to, say, Chrome or Firefox. [
Email: my folders won't show up properly for my Gmail account. Crashes all the time if you have like 3+ email accounts. Thunderbird on the other hand has never crashed for me.
Photos: the only thing it does right.
Video: on a 4:3 screen, is another joke. Not to mention the thing only supports like 3 different formats. VLC supports pretty much everything, on the other hand. AND you don't have to deal with iTunes.
Music: same as videos, you have to deal with iTunes and it doesn't support all the formats out there. You can't download music right onto your device having acquired the music from another site like Amazon without having to sync the thing with iTunes first. Its dependence on a full OS is what stops it from being an real OS itself.
Games: has its fair share of games. But it still doesn't have Flash, so kiss those hundreds of thousands of games spanning over a decade goodbye.
eBooks: who fucking cares
No, it's not a real OS. Multitasking isn't done properly either. Not even the Xoom does it right. On a screen that large, having a primitive app switcher is kind of pathetic. Having several windows open side by side, however...
Browsing: Oh no, it's missing a dying standard! Obviously Apple is fucking with my browsing experience! I *HATE* having fantastic battery life and constant speeds, goddammit. Apple's probably going to make you buy the iPhone FLASH™ or something! And why isn't it as fast as a browser on a desktop with an i7?!
Email: Your problems are only yours, then, because I've never experienced that or heard anyone complain about it.
Video: Download VLC for iPhone or jailbreak. Done. Viewing videos on my friend's iPad was a fantastic experience, I honestly couldn't give less of a shit about it being 4:3.
Music: There's music applications meant for that stuff. Grooveshark, etc.
Games: Kiss those hundreds of thousands of games goodbye and download the same game from the App Store, and if the game hasn't been directly remade I'm sure there's similar ones.
eBooks: People who read care.
It's a real OS. It's software that tells the hardware what to do, it's an OS.

I never said that. I was just surprised over how misinformed this person, so I thought of enlightening him, instead of making replies such as yours.

You're really a long way up Jobs' ass if you think Flash is a "dying standard". And you can *choose to turn it off, therefore amazing battery life AND full browser experience is a possibility.
And while you attack Spyder for talking of own experience, as that is the standard, you use yourself as an example. Great job. Ebooks.. Erhh, I can't imagine myself doing it, but sure, I have the choice to do so.
*I wasn't sure of whether you know what the word means, so here:
Choose
v. chose (chz), cho·sen (chzn), choos·ing, choos·es
v.tr.
1. To select from a number of possible alternatives; decide on and pick out.
2.
a. To prefer above others: chooses the supermarket over the neighborhood grocery store.
b. To determine or decide: chose to fly rather than drive.

Twice as fast as in overall quality and performance of simple things such as scrolling and orientation switching. Again with the multitasking? really? tell me please what the hell makes so inferior because it appears to be working fine to me. Also you're right, 16:9 is awesome for movies. On a goddamn tv, not a tablet that is going to feel like shit unless you hold it in landscape, no wonder it takes so long to flip orientation, no one wants to use it in landscape when its awkward as hell.

You scroll twice as fast? That doesn't sound good to me. I think you're trying to say responsive, which I can't really see it being. And you woudln't call browsing a simple task on a thing running a what you proclaimed a real OS
Not debating the fact that it certainly is an OS, but if browsing is suddenly hyper-advanced computing, then..
Browsing: Oh no, it's missing a dying standard! Dying standard?
Let me explain to you exactly what happened: Flash was never a selling point. The PSP had a version of it. Did you know that? Doubt it. It was only when Apple didn't want to include it that suddenly Flash got more and more popular. Today, Flash is on more devices than ever and it's getting better and better. Steve's little plan completely backfired because Flash is not going anywhere for a long time.
Browsing is still a joke. I can't do simple shit because of how limited it is. It's no i7, but it still performs horrible for a dual core 1GHz processor. I'd like to know why an age-old PC running XP on a <1GHz processor and <300mb of RAM runs circles around an iPad running iOS on a dual core 1GHz processor with 512MB RAM.
Email: Your problems are only yours, then, because I've never experienced that or heard anyone complain about it.
The folders still don't show up, and it's not 'only' my problem.
Video: Download VLC for iPhone or jailbreak. Done. Viewing videos on my friend's iPad was a fantastic experience, I honestly couldn't give less of a shit about it being 4:3.
VLC isn't on the App Store anymore. And with VLC, I can't just download videos and watch them on the iPad. I'd have to hook it up to iTunes, make sure App syncing is turned on (so a no-go if you like to manually manage apps) every single time I want to watch a video. Even then, the format support is shit compared to VLC on Windows. It's this dependence on iTunes that makes it still a phone OS and not a tablet one, let alone a real full-fledged one.
Music: There's music applications meant for that stuff. Grooveshark, etc.
Shoddy workarounds aren't going to impress any power user. I'd like to have a central application that will take my full library and let me use it efficiently. Having a dozen apps for a dozen different sources, none of which are allowed to touch the native music app, is not impressive.
Games: Kiss those hundreds of thousands of games goodbye and download the same game from the App Store, and if the game hasn't been directly remade I'm sure there's similar ones.
Meanwhile Windows has, what, millions of games?
It's a real OS. It's software that tells the hardware what to do, it's an OS.
It's an OS by definition. But it's fit for a phone, not a tablet. The dumb limitations make it a toy at best.

You can download movies from the iTunes app on the device. How do you get movies onto any other tablet? I completely forgot about it, you don't need any third party apps to get music onto your iDevice either.
You can download movies from the iTunes app on the device.
There are thousands of stores out there. iTunes doesn't exactly have the most competitive pricing. It's understandable if people want to buy movies from elsewhere.
How do you get movies onto any other tablet?
USB flash drive, internet (most sites offer a way to redownload for free), external DVD/Bluray, etc.
you don't need any third party apps to get music onto your iDevice either.
That's not what I mean, man. I'm saying, for example, if you want to download the music from Amazon, tough luck doing it without iTunes. With another tablet, like Windows for example, it's a full-fledged OS. I can just fucking DOWNLOAD it and import it into my iTunes/Zune/foobar/etc library right there without having to connect it to anything.
Difference is: when I travel with my iPad, I usually have to take a netbook or laptop along if I want to load more movies, music, etc. on it. When I travel with, say, my Eee Slate or HP Slate, I can just take it by itself because there are no such limitations. Not everybody gets their music from iTunes, movies from iTunes, and apps from App Store.
I honestly hope flash dies and burns in hell. Not cause apple hates it or wont allow it on their devices, but because I just genuinely hate it. You shouldn't have to have a program or a plugin to do something that should already just work. I know nothing of coding HTML or what the pros and cons are of Flash vs HTML 5, but it seems to me that something coded in HTML 5 so that it just works on everything makes more sense. I have my Macbook and a PS3 for games, I have my Macbook and my home theatre for movies, and i have and iPad that casually does it all in a fun, portable way.

Sorry, I'm fucked.
Still, you'll need support for HTML5 to, so his argument about that you shouldn't need additional plugins or whatever is invalid anyway.

I'd give HTML5 a proper chance if it actually ran well on the iPad. Right now it's a laggy mess and Frash sure as hell ran a lot better.
But naturally Apple can't risk changing their minds, they'd have to reconvert their fanbase.

Not like that'll be a problem, they seem to adore Apple more for every day. "You don't need an 11.6"-Steve Jobs 2 years ago. "This revolutionary new product will be available with both a 13.6", and a new magical 11.6" screen". -Steve Jobs not too long ago.
The problem Steve Jobs has with Flash is that he tries to convert the whole internet with his 5% marketshare, and needless to say, it isn't going very well. That's like Denmark trying to attack the U.S.

It's your choice whether you heed advice from people with greater knowledge than you on a subject or not, but you may benefit from doing so. Feel free to follow the trend but perhaps you should consider the pros and cons before you dish out your hard earned cash for something.
Flash isnt going anywhere any time soon. HTML 5 can do amazing things yes, but it cannot do half of what Flash is capable of. It doesnt help that quite a lot of HTML 5 based applications are so god damned slow on iDevices.

It is fun though to browse MacRumors and see how many people actually think that Flash is dying. Like you said, the percentage of the web that makes up all iOS devices is something like 5%-6%. It's more like Chernobyl attacking the U.S.
enlighten me, please, what makes flash a necessary part of the "full-web" apart from shitty games, distracting ads, and increased strain on the cpu?
enlighten me, please, what makes flash a necessary part of the "full-web" apart from shitty games, distracting ads, and increased strain on the cpu?
- interactive menus on a lot of sites. Want to order Pizza? Schedule an appointment? Get an interactive map for a building? Many sites use Flash for delivering this kind of content, so get your laptop because the iPad can't do it.
- uncrippled YouTube. The YouTube app on the iPad is a joke, and 720p videos take minutes to fully buffer. Putting it side by side with an HP Slate or Eee Slate, they both buffer an entire 1080p video in 10-15 seconds flat. The iPad playback on the other hand freezes every 5 seconds and it takes a good 10 minutes (!) to fully load the video, a 2 minute trailer.
- games. No, Flash games aren't all shitty. You can't possibly say that with the influx of crapware on the App Store.
- you think ads are Flash-exclusive? Not to mention, most ads out there are .gif images, not Flash.
- streaming video from a ton of sites out there. I don't want to wait for some shitty counterpart app to come out that does a half-assed job. I want the full site with the video embedded properly.
Bravo my good man. I don't understand why you bring up HP and Eee slates though, make a Hackintosh slate and then compare them to that, considering they run windows 7 and not windows phone 7. Back to the flash: until adobe manages to optimize it 100% for the mobile, touch world, and Apple stops being smug then I will fail to care about whether or not it is supported on what devices.

But flash works perfectly on just about all Android phones.
And he brought HP and Eee into it because he wanted to compare to someone who was actualy doing it right.

I don't, but the Android do offer more options than an iPad, and they're usually cheaper (Archos).

Well, this is a public forum, right? We're allowed to discuss whatever we want, as long as it's linked with the subject, of course. If you don't like us discussing that, go to macrumours or whatever.
I got the Camera Connection Kit in the mail today, it comes in a small little box. I'll test it out next month when the iPad comes in.
