Yeah I'm just gonna reformat and install a fresh copy of Windows 7 x64.
My system as it is is plagued with remnants of old drivers from the plethora of shitty hand-me-downs I've been making do with.
I'm sure that's the problem, and I'm sure it will all be better after I've reformatted.
Is the graphics card inside the PC?

Win 7 x64 requires that you install both x86 and x64 versions of vcredist.
If this doesn't work try the microsoft hotfix for this problem.

Buggy drivers. I have an HD5870 also and Source games get less than decent frame rates compared to my old GTS250.
post pc specs.maybe the card is too powerful for you're pc !
Why do people get a Mac? It's worthless, you could nearly compare one with my really old Sony Vaio Laptop that I only use for work and chatting on Skype.
If I had the choice of getting a really brand new Mac between my really old Sony I wouldn't take a Mac because there's no freedom on it at all(I would trade it though if those guys would have given me extra money so that the trade wasn't an utter downgrade).
