There is the att using the test socket [editline]09:06PM[/editline]
At that speed, it points towards a line fault / ISP faggotry. How long have you been with Orange, and how long is the contract?
Around 2 years. Not sure how much longer the contract has.
Dr.Phil prank calls Comcast customer service: funniest shit EVER.
And this has to do with this thread how?
Anything else I can do to try and solve this problem?
Around 2 years. Not sure how much longer the contract has.
Call Orange and say you want your MAC code. They're legally required to give it to you within 5 days, and it's valid for a max of 30 days. Then, switch to someone like Be (http://bethere.co.uk) or an ISP that doesn't suck. That should help with the speed (and their support will actually do something about your line). Enjoy!
promised up to 16Mb/s That could be even 2Mb/s
So if you go over 16 mb/s you can sue them?
Anything else I can do to try and solve this problem?
If your line still sucks at the test socket, then it's really up to your ISP and if it's a line fault, BT. Firstly, I'd move from Orange because they're about as much use as a chocolate teapot. Go to someone like Be. You'll very likely see a huge improvement immediately.
This post makes no sence, it's the quality of the cable between you and the exchange that's the problem (BT won't replace it unless you can prove it's an inherant fault)
I thought that's what I said.

16 Mbit ≈ 2 Mb just saying
Related question: My modem states separate values for the attenuation and SNR, for both upload and download. The values are very different. Why is this, seems as they are both coming from the same exchange ? (I'd expect.) Download: -SNR: 11.6dB -Attenuation: 32dB Upload: -SNR: 13.5dB -Attenuation: 13.7dB
Sue.
I went on their website and entered my postcode and they say Be isn't available here just yet.
go here and punch your postcode in: http://www.samknows.com/broadband/search.php?page=availability-exchange-search - it'll tell you what's available, come back with what is ticked in LLU and we'll tell you what's best
Orange are limiting almost all of their customers to some extent during the evening hours as part of their latest cost cutting exercise. Email them and tell them you are reporting them to Offcom and you are seeking legal advice. My dad pulled that one and got us pretty much back to normal speeds.
Does the UK not have cable or fiber internet? Everyone on Facepunch bitches about how crappy their internet speeds are because their parents are cheapskates and won't switch to a decent provider. Comcast Cable for the win: I only pay for 16Mb down, and 3Mb up.
We pay for 2mb/s and get 6 or more :D
Please stop trolling, we have Virgin Media for 50mb fiber but it's only available in cities / certain areas.
Not trolling, just wondering why the UK doesn't have decent internet when it's almost 2010.
Not trolling, just wondering why the UK doesn't have decent internet when it's almost 2010.
We all still use ADSL because BT is lazy. They're gunna be rolling FTTS soon though, which should speed things up.
We all still use ADSL because BT is lazy. They're gunna be rolling FTTS soon though, which should speed things up.
Well that's finally some good news for you guys. It's pretty shitty that alot of the populated areas in the world still rely on dial-up, DSL, and ADSL to get online. Internet over phone line just isn't practical these days. :/

Umm take a look [editline]10:17PM[/editline] It says "O2 / Be Unlimited has enabled the Aberdeen Bieldside exchange for their service" So Be is avalable where I live?
Not trolling, just wondering why the UK doesn't have decent internet when it's almost 2010.
Only 13 states in the US have fiber. Idiot.
;18155392']Only 13 states in the US have fiber. Idiot.
Well mine is one of those 13. I live in Oregon, and we've had fiber for a few years now. I personally go with Cable because the price is right for the service I pay for.
This is to do with the fact that upload/download use different ranges of frequencies on the line. Here's a handy-dandy picture to illustrate my point: Firstly, lets define SNR: Signal/Noise Ratio is a measure of how clear a signal is. It compares the amount of signal to the amount of noise. More signal compared to noise you get, the better. If you look at the yellow graph in the middle, this shows the SNR for different "tones" on the line. Each tone is a range of frequencies on the line which can be used individually. The way ADSL works is, that it assigns bits to each tone. The better the SNR, the more bits you can get into a tone without it screwing up. Basically, the frequencies assingned to upload may not have as high a SNR as the ones assigned to download. Attenuation. Right, this is basically how much of the signal is lost between the exchange and your modem. The lower this value, the better. Again, without going into too much detail, this goes back round to the point that different frequencies on the line are used for upload and download, and so losses are different and different frequencies. Fun Fact: ADSL filters do two jobs. One of which is to filter out the low frequencies used for voice calls! (The other is to do with impedance which needs to be different for the ADSL and the voice circuits) Yes, I'm completely aware that was 100% waffle but hopefully at least one person, for example yngndrw, finds it interesting.
Yes, I'm completely aware that was 100% waffle but hopefully at least one person, for example yngndrw, finds it interesting.
I do, thank you for the explanation Hexxeh. :)
They probably said 16 MegaBITS/s 16 MegaBITS/s is 2 MegaBYTES/s
The speed test in the OP shows they are getting 2 mega bits. (Lower case 'b')
They probably said 16 MegaBITS/s 16 MegaBITS/s is 2 MegaBYTES/s
This is why my downloads cap at 2.1 Megabytes, because I pay for a 16 Megabit connection. :h:

Switch to a ISP like Virgin Media or Be.
Hahahahahahahahahaha-ha
I don't know how that's hard to believe. I used to have Orange and got 1 megabit whereas on BT I get 8. They are a terrible ISP and their customer service is the worst I have ever dealt with.
