The cutoff of Adam's laptop and Wii are because they sit close to each other. :sigh: :bang:
Dare I even photograph my mess of networking skills.
Precisely why I'm not getting a Cisco certification. They probably wouldn't let me.
Maybe I'll draw something up, but it's a mess.
but he used so many hubs and switches for so few devices, seems like a waste of hardware and electricity...
It's mainly been done by my dad and brother and the computers are strewn across the house, so instead of running several ~15m cables through the roof, there's just 1 cable going to each room that connects to the 16 port switch.
I don't think my brother actually uses his 24 port switch anymore (which he got for LANs, but 100Mbit is too slow for leeching, plus we have a family friend who has several gigabit switches we could borrow if needed), but it's real handy being able to connect a friends laptop into the network and have it in the same room as us.
My bro bought the 24 port switch, my dad and I each bought an 8 port hub and my dad got the 16 port switch from work and we have solar panels on the roof (and live in a mediterranean climate) so it's not really a problem :v:

Can't you just get a Wireless N router and keep it all wireless?
Can't you just get a Wireless N router and keep it all wireless?
Fuck wireless.
Slow, expensive and insecure.
Edit:
Not to mention, if you wanna get anal about it all, there's a lot more wasted energy unless you have directional antennas
Plus, none of the computers in the house move so there's really nothing to gain by using wireless.

I prefer Ethernet as well when I'm close enough, but my router is mounted to my wall, so the PS3 is the only one suffering without Ethernet.
as of right now:

Yeah, if I had a console, it would be networked with ethernet.
My dad got 100m+ of cat5e from the electrician's in the building next to his at work years ago, then some time last year he got ~150m of cat6 from them. They threw out the cat5e because the box was ruined and the cat6 because it was a tangled mess :v:
Once we get the standalone games/utility shed out the back finished, that's going to be networked in and we'll probably have computers buzzing out there, hopefully.
Also, a revised/more in-depth map:

We horde too much shit :buddy:
Something like this:

Where the heck did you get those icons or the program to make that network map?

You could try the not so shit Visio '07

Microsoft Office Visio 2007
I must say Visio 2007 is quite nice...

OOPS.... the internet goes through the modem before the router... sorry.
Behold the most confusing networking diagram ever.

Explanation:
The ZyXEL router connects to the internet.
- ZyXEL NSA-220 is a Media Server via Ethernet
- MacBook Pro & MSI Wind via Wireless LAN
- DMA-100 (streams content from my PC and the NSA-220 to the LCDTV) & Centurion (my desktop) via Home Plug (AKA LAN over power line)
- Omnia & 5700 via Bluetooth
- Scanner & Printer (only the printer is shared)
No idea what the fuck is going on there.

I notice now that I forgot the PSP...

The Tesla aint no server son.
wpa2
Slow and expensive, then.
And uses more power ;)
It'll never be as secure as a hard line though, but then again, not everyone knows how to 'hack' into a wireless network.
And there's also the convenience of portability for laptops 'n' such.
