For transfers between GNU systems, I use tar and netcat, which has basically zero overhead. But in this case I was downloading the big file onto a Windows system, where I don't have wget or netcat. (I'm not a fan of Cygwin — dumping a Unix-like environment in the middle of a Windows system is an ugly kluge.)
