Ok, I'll settle with 2 of the 460's that thf posted. I'm also changing from the 800D to the 700D. No reason to drop that much for a few drive bays and other things.
Hmm? The 800D is actually cheaper than the 700D on newegg right now.
Ok so I decided with the 2x460's. Tiger Direct has them for $150, and the SuperClocked edition for $200. Is it worth the extra $50 for SC?
You can just overclock it yourself, you don't need to waste the extra money for factory overclocked.
Sell the GTX 285, get a HAF X and a GTX 580.
Got the Corsair 700D for $180, then I got an 800D window mod that is priced at $30, but it came free. So I basically got an 800D (minus a few features) for $180. Now It's time to order the 460's. I plan on going with the ones thf posted.

No idea why the 700D is listed more than the 800D...

I'm also starting to re-look things, and I'm curious about SLI 470's...
What's the GTX 460's performance like compared to the 285? I'd assumed it'd be better, but for some reason that fact that the 460 is $200 cheaper tells me otherwise. Unless I slapped two of those baddies in SLI.
[editline]4th December 2010[/editline]
After doing some browsing, it doesn't look like anything will really benefit me until I get to about the 480. And at that price it would make sense to spend a few extra bucks and get the 580. So where I'm at I might just stay with a 285, maybe SLI. Sadly no DX11 though... not that it's really necessary
2 460s are faster than 1 480
don't let price be an indication because it rarely is

What about SLI 470's, is that worth the extra money from SLI 460's?
as far as I know they are similar, since I heard the 460s scale better
but I still say get either a 570 or a 69**
Crossfire 6870: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150506&cm_re=6870-_-14-150-506-_-Product
Cheaper than GTX 470's and takes alot less power. Almost the same as the GTX 460 and similar/better performance.
So I guess for my budget I'll probably stick with 2x460's. My other question is can I use my 285 as a physX card? I've seen people use like 260's for physX, but I heard it can stunt performance. I have a 1000w PSU, so I don't think power consumption will be a problem.

I haven't done that before so I really can't talk on that matter, but I'm pretty sure you'll be able to.
Ok thanks. As much as I want to push a little more then the 460's, I feel like that will be more than enough for what I'll really be doing. With a budget of about $400 it gets the job done.
What about SLI 470's, is that worth the extra money from SLI 460's?
it does perform better individually, but in SLI it's really not staggeringly better, not enough to warrant how much more they cost than the 460 per unit.
either get 2 460s, a 580, or wait and get 2 560s/570s. a lot of people on here will tell you to wait before getting a second card - if you have the money and are willing to spend it, don't.
[editline]5th December 2010[/editline]
i think you can use the 285 as a PhysX card, but i'm not totally sure because the 460s, and again make sure you get 1GB cards, are standard SLI, not tri/quad. so i don't know how that would work

"It can sit on it's own. Just dedicate that card in the nVidia control panel for the Physx."
there you go
Thanks for the PhysX help. So I've decided with SLI 460's. Now I just have to find the right ones.
Thanks for the PhysX help. So I've decided with SLI 460's. Now I just have to find the right ones.
The cheapest one, is the right one, unless you find one for a little more with a better cooler or more VRAM.
Like this card?

avoid the SEs
if possible go for the MSI Cyclone 1GB, it's a great cooler for SLi because it's open so you can get more cooling from general airflow than relying on the fan on the card
it's also one of the best coolers for the 460, very cool and very quiet
Well, I was in hopes of staying with EVGA, no real reason. I've just always been satisfied.

that any good?
Why won't you buy from NewEgg?
Why won't you buy from NewEgg?
No reason. I bought all my parts from there last time and loved the service. I'm just looking for wherever I can get the parts the cheapest. There was also a Tiger Direct in Chicago that is about 2 hours from me, so everything ships really fast.

the external exhast is horrible, louder and hotter than even the stock, all to lower case temps by maybe 5C if you're lucky
and it's more expensive than the cyclone before rebate

As long as its 1gb and not SE (iirc the only 2gb models are SE) you're fine
As long as its 1gb and not SE (iirc the only 2gb models are SE) you're fine
Thanks, plan on ordering 2 today. I'll just make sure they are 1gb, and not SE (almost made that mistake)
If you aren't on a huge resolution, this is a really good deal: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130562
And this is 7$ more with a (presumeably) better cooler: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127519
1GB cards still perform better than their lower memory counterparts, regardless of resolution.
if he wasn't using a high resolution he wouldn't be getting 2 460s
OP you can get 460 hawks for 190, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127518
[editline]5th December 2010[/editline]
$30 MIR too
Is external exhaust that bad? just curious.

I really don't see why he should pay 60$ more for 256MB.
I really don't why he should pay 60$ more for 256MB.
because there's a bigger difference than the amount of VRAM
Is external exhaust that bad? just curious.
it's pretty much worse than even the stock cooler in every way
460s just don't need to have the heat exhausted straight out the case
