Due to the fact that any blower-style fan has to work harder than one which is directly over the main heatsink (as in the one on the reference GTX 460) there are two things which distinguish this card: it has higher noise levels and temperatures than the stock card.
Haha my dad thinks I should buy a GTX 580, and never really have to upgrade. I'm concerned I can do better for the money. He has a point though, I am an FPS nazi and try to run all my games maxed. I'm sure since the 460 is pretty much the lowest end card that can run DX11, it will need to be upgraded sooner. Call me crazy but I'm almost thinking about taking his advice. I don't really know much about the card, is it even worth the money?
regardless of whether you decide to buy them or not you have to realize that once the 570 and the 69** cards come out in like a week prices are going to drop
Exactly, and I do understand. I have to send in my motherboard to EVGA for RMA, so I have pretty much all month to wait. Maybe I can find holiday sales somewhere too. I'm in no rush until I get all my parts back.

a single 580 would and will outperform 2 460s, and later on down the line you can throw in another. if your dad is actually for that, go for it.
460 isn't the lowest end card that will do DX11 though
460 isn't the lowest end card that will do DX11 though
I meant compared to say the 470, 480, and even the 580.
And I'm really starting to consider just going all out on it. I don't want people to be like "w4ste of m0ney u fag, better cardz out there". Would the money be worth it in the long run?
the 580 isn't a waste of money, it's a good deal if you have the money.
the 580 isn't a waste of money, it's a good deal if you have the money.
The money isn't that bad of an issue because I know that in the future it will pay off.

If I were to get the 580, I'd want to sell my 285. They are listed for around $450 new. I was considering selling for about $200.
When it comes down to practical use, I just think "am I ever going to need a 580?" even though It'd be amazing. I just can't decide.
Just get one. You won't regret it.
A 285? I would buy one for $120, max

I'm gonna go against your advice and point out that one GTX 580 will in most cases be outperfomed by two GTX 460's. But I'm agreeing on the matter of future SLI.
no, it won't. and that's not "i don't think it'll be outperformed", that's "it will not be outperformed"
not to mention there are still games that release without SLI support like Lost Planet 2 or Amnesia

Well, consistently throughout all the becnhmars I've found, they're either very close or the GTX 580 outperformed. If you could give me the link to the benchmark you've found where this is not consistent, please, don't let me wait.
I did read a long article about the 580 being close to or outperformed by 2x460's. But, what I did read is that "where it counts" the 580 crushed the 2x460's (the 580 made games run much smoother in situations with many particles). I've never used SLI before and I feel like it'd be more of a hassle than spending the extra money and just running a single GPU. The other thing is in the long run, I feel like I'm better off with the 580, because 2x460's in SLI is the limit, you can't go 3 SLI. When it comes down to it i'm just concerned "will I ever need so much power for the games I play?". Another note, I'm gaming at 1920x1080 on a 22" monitor.
[editline]6th December 2010[/editline]
I already went and ordered (4) 4pin single braid cords along with my case with the idea I'd get 460's in SLI. So I would have to return them (not a big deal, just have to pay return shipping) but that was fault on my part, I should have made sure I was sold on the 460's at the time.

Well, I would say you did the right thing.
I don't feel like I should have a problem with the 460's running the games I want. But in the future, there isn't much upgrading from there, it's just getting a new gpu. Whereas the 580 there won't be much upgrading for a very long time, and I don't have to worry about any problems with SLI.
like i said earlier, if cost isn't an issue, get a 580
Cost shouldn't set me back a whole lot. And I'm really leaning towards the 580, that way I'll be set with not having to deal with SLI or upgrading for a long long time.
ok, then what's stopping you

Just buy it already holy fuck.
Why the hell not haha. You all have been extreme help. I appreciate everything. Thanks
Many reviews seem to say the 580 is pretty much an overpriced 480 though?
and only has like a 5 fps improvement or something

no not even please don't ever post again if you aren't going to bother to look up actual benchmarks
no not even please don't ever post again if you aren't going to bother to look up actual benchmarks
uh, I looked up a few and its literally a 10 fps difference in most cases...

The 580 also has better cooling, and much quieter too. It's basically the 480 done right. With more power of course.

A 5970 is better than a 580? I think these benchmarks are a bit off.
The 570 is released tomorrow correct? I can't order anything soon anyways because of the motherboard, maybe I'll check into that, benchmarks and see the price.
A 5970 is better than a 580? I think these benchmarks are a bit off.
that entirely depends on how a game handles SLI or Crossfire.
[editline]wefwe[/editline]
the 570 will cost $400, with a performance of somewhere between the 480 and the 580
