Double Competition - Alternate Hardware - External Enclosure Mod

I might join in. Still processing ideas.
A lot of people are in school.
which is why people aren't participating as much.
I most likely won't, because of school.
I will be participating, just going to be planning and thinking until towards the end of the competition. Away at college, don't have anything here to make an enclosure with/don't have old computer parts. Except an external enclosure for a hard drive I'm about to put into my PC....
Not a proper entry yet. I need to get pictures of the build and the like :)
Also, I couldn't see anything on it being built during the competition, this is something I made over the summer using a psu. I'll be getting some proper shots of this in the coming weeks.
We essentially used a psu to power a car radiator fan from an old metro (both 12v, similar amperage) and used this to get a barbeque to the correct temperature faster (the fastest we clocked it using lumpwood charcoal was about 40 seconds from initially lighting it, as oppose to the usual 30 mins it would normally take).
About 20 seconds in, blowing the coal dust off and getting past the flaming stage

Just settling to temperature (Different time to the first. Not enough coals on this run :( )

Can I mod something for use with my own External hard drive (smaller dimensions, it's a laptop drive)?

I'd think so, but then you'd have no use for the priiiiiiiize.

I guess you could. If you won you'd have to accept the Steam prize.
Eh, I give up on this competition. The laser exploded in a brilliant shower of sparks(as in, my dad stepped on the diode by mistake because the bag it was in fell to the floor) and I don't feel like taking apart my Recon, and I have an even better project to do now. But best of luck to all the competitors!
Not sure if this counts - but with a bit of solder i managed to turn a front-panel speaker, a PSU and an old headphone jack into a working ipod charger/speaker.

i did a bit of cleaning/lubricating to make the fan more quiet, but a big downside is that the speakers are pretty tinny and the fan is still pretty loud, but it's 500% better than the radio i have in the garage (people froum Melbourne will know how bad fox.fm is)
i bet the PC that these parts came from couldnt even run Itunes.
if i applied a little effort i bet i could make this into an OK entry.

Maybe you could try to attach a bigger speaker to it? Other than that, nice work!

the speakers are built into the front panel thing, replacing them would be a pain in the ass.
Hooray for interest and participation!
Well the challenges are kinda cruddy. I'm considering entering for the external HDD challenge but I've yet to come up with a good idea.
The alternate hardware competition is user-submitted.
I'm trying to make the external competition easy for everyone but Facepuncher's general lack of motivation seems to overpower these things.
well as for the external HDD enclosure, we're all supposed to build it according to your conversion board, and since you haven't posted any concrete measurements for screw holes of the conversion board or the actual dimensions of the conversion board, with measurements for the locations of the contacts, it's not really that easy. Winging it from the pictures won't really do it.
If you have experience in CAD, or know anyone with experience in CAD, make/have them make a blueprint of the conversion board with precise measurements and how it links together with the drive + measurements when connected to the drive.
Short of that, nobody really can enter that competition unless they post it half done and finish it when they get the price, which would make judging a nightmare...

There are no screw holes and there are accurate measurements of the board.
This may be a bit of an over-reaction...
Holy fucking fishtits. Read the OP.
I mean, I appreciate the wall of text to try and justify yourself, but you just made yourself look like a total ass.
Gah, I had an idea for the hard drive enclosure, but it won't work with that board. I might try something with the Alternate Hardware uses, though.

Good job reading my post, both of you.
There aren't any comprehensive measurements for the locations of the connections.
And also, are the measurements to the edges of the screwholes or to the centers? it doesn't specify.

I see no reason why the connections need measured if they're going to be in the drive. They're standard SATA connections and that's that. You should be building an enclosure that encases the drive and board as a single entity. If they're separate, like someone mentioned earlier in this thread, either they match up or they don't.
And go ahead and take a guess on the screwhole measurements. I'll leave that to you.
Most proper enclosures don't have an exact spot for the screw hole anyway, it's usually like an oval... So do that instead of bitching.

I meant the USB and power connections that will need holes drilled in the enclosure I might be making.

Well then you should specify. If you haven't noticed, I'm more than happy to take measurements. But when you ask in a way that is disrespectful and douchey then I'm not going to do it.
I can see that you're new here. You should take some time to get used to the attitude in this forum before you start shitposting and get yourself banned. Disrespect is a one way ticket to the Refugee Camp.

I'm not new here, and it was never my intention to be disrespectful or douchey, you must have misinterpreted what I wrote.
You both misinterpreted what eachother said. /argument

You mean besides calling my competition cruddy and picking it apart? There are plenty of ways you could have kindly asked for new measurements.
And who are you? If you're not new then you must be an alt.
You both misinterpreted what eachother said. /argument
this, now i was considering entering too, could you supply the measurements or not?
Board dimensions can be found HERE and HERE.
Added to OP.
Could I please have y-axis measurements for the USB and power connectors?
Shit. I'll get those to you as soon as I can.
