It's kind of a difficult competition for the hard drive one since you made us need that gigantic converter board, and the alternate uses thing, I guess people sell their old computers more than use their parts.

i sometimes use my old standard intel HSF to cool a can of coke... but i dont have any money for coke cans.

also planning on making an 80mm fan run off USB, but i dont have any broken usb sticks for tearing apart

It's inherently difficult to design something for a component you don't have in your possession or don't have proper measurements on (by proper I mean propper fucking by the books style [i]professional[/i] blueprints or autoCAD drawing/model). And the alternative uses thing is so broad it doesn't spark the imagination. Alternate uses for your DVD drive would have been a better contest for example, people would find all sorts of things to use it for besides the obvious cup holder what with the actuating function of it opening.
