Actually not bullshit. It's called a cold boot attack (check Wikipedia). It's been done against most major disk-encryption systems: http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/02/21/1543234&tid=172

This is why you rewrite the RAM at shutdown... if you really are wearing a tinfoil hat. There is something wrong with your physical security if people can open up your case and rip the RAM out of it. Buy a deadbolt for your door...
Your friend is a moron. Pinging someone doesn't hack a persons computer. Pinging is a simple app on command prompt used to determine whether a host is online and available. All your doing is sending one or more (IMCP) echo messages to a specified host requesting a reply. The Target Host then responds by returning the echo message back to the sender. That's all it does. You can hack someones computer if you obtain their ip address though. That's called NetBIOS hacking. Now regarding RAM freezing,I've heard rumors about people doing it but i have never actually tried it. Question: If you took the RAM cartridge out, wouldn't that mess up the computer?

The RAM still has the files there for a while after the power is shut down, the cooling is used to make the files stay there longer uncorrupted.
