I use one as a secondary laptop, runs great. Even runs Minecraft at ~40 FPS.
i had an acer monitor once and it broke, and besides picture quality it was awful when it worked
I have an Acer monitor (had it for over 2 years) and it's been great. I guess I got lucky.
I have an Aspire 5734z-4512 (I think), and it's great. For 400$, it can run source games relatively well. It has 2.3ghz processor, decent GPU, 4gb of RAM, and a 15.6 inch screen. I haven't been disappointed yet, except for the battery life.
My Acer Aspire w/ an i5, 4gg ddr3, and a 5650 has been great to me so far. Bought it back in June and have had zero problems with it. I recommend installing an OEM version of windows on your laptop as soon as you get it, so you don't have to deal with all of the crap that the manufacturer loads onto it. Haven't had any heat problems as of yet, but only time will tell. I was having some issues running some games (some freezing, etc.) and I thought the GPU was overheating but it turns out ATI just had some shitty drivers. Everything was much better after I updated.
That's the same I'm looking at. But she's saying she doesn't want an Acer, cause her current ( also an Acer ) has gone beyond batshit insanity. ( you have to run the repair shit when you start it etc. )
Reinstalling Windows will solve that problem. Just back everything up that you want to keep as you will lose all of your data otherwise. Be sure to download all of the drivers you need and burn them to a disk (or put them on a flash drive) beforehand.
I have an Acer Aspire 8942G , and personally it works really good, had it for 6 months now. The max temp it ever went was 63C under full load by playing BFBC2 in 1920x1080 nearly at high for 3 hrs. It ain't that bad IMO. It's also the computer I use everyday. Like, my main one, never failed on me. Plus paid it 630$ with shipping.
Acer are pretty average laptops but are generally cheaper, Dell laptops are pretty bad. Heard good things about Asus but otherwise it depends on what type of gaming/other reason you want.
My friends HP with a low-end integrated card can hit 125(C) from 15 minutes of BF2. They're still shitty.
Mines gets no more than 65C [editline]4th January 2011[/editline]
What about HPs? They're still shitty ?
I have an Acer, and I love it. Only things I don't like about it is the meh battery life, and the fact that it has a 32-bit OS on a 64-bit processor. Hate it when companies do that.
Get yourself a free Windows 7 x64 copy from microsoft. You can download it for free. Your key of x32 will also work on x64. The only difference is, you only get the Professional from MS (actually, every Win7 DVD contains ALL versions), so you need to modify the iso in order to have a "version selection" popup in the installation-wizard later so you can select the right version. And battery life depends on the model. If it's an Acer Aspire, it will be not as good as on a Travelmate TimelineX. I got 5.5 to 6 hours which is great compared to my previous laptop (1-2 hours) [editline]4th January 2011[/editline]
Acer are pretty average laptops but are generally cheaper, Dell laptops are pretty bad. If you just want to spend $400-$500, you will get an average to upper laptop. I spent 800 € (~ $900) on my TimelineX and it's great.
Personally,IMO Asus are a better choice. Their G series(Gaming) and A series(Performance) are really great. But I think the A series are more than enough for your GF to run all source games at MAX.
Go for ASUS. Get the A series or the K series. The G series are quite heavy, as I have one, but perform fantastically.
I have an Acer laptop, and for the first year, it worked fine. Then it started to go downhill. It slowed down a lot (causing us to get the data copied onto another hard drive and then get that one put in the laptop to fix it), we have had numerous problems with it not charging properly, and recently, the left mouse button and most of the keyboard keys stopped working.

My current laptop is a Dell studio 1555, It is best laptop I have ever owned, and I have had many laptops (One being an acer). Getting spares for Dell computers is very easy too. In the past I would have agreed with you but times have changed. I will never buy a Asus till they change their policy on not giving service manuals. (This isn't a problem for most, but I don't like the idea of buying a product that will be a self-destructing puzzle if I ever need to get into it)

I've never heard good things about Acer, but then again, I can't say I've really heard complaints. I guess there was the one complaint about them using cheap speakers, but you really should be using headphones on a laptop anyway. At least, I hope it doesn't buzz in your headphones like Dell does.
Get an Asus if it is for gaming primarily
I have had an Acer Aspire One for a week now, it seems to be pretty well made...But I guess it all depends on the model, and how lucky you are...
