CIPWTTKT&GC v0x14 (v20): Turning it off and on all day every day

Verizon makes no fucking sense sometimes.
I'm moving to a new apartment, mainly to reduce my commute from 60 miles/day to 6. (That's roughly 100km/day for you godless America-hating terrorists).
The apartment I'm moving to will be adding free internet. Starting about two months after I move in. They do phones and TV, so all I need is internet.
First, they literally do not offer "just internet". Fortunately you can do any two of "TV, Internet, Phone", and phones are only like $10 a month.
Second, they do not list on their site the no-contract costs. All the prices they have are for a two-year contract. I had to "chat" with their "sales" "representative" to find out what it would be month-to-month (and it's actually only $5 or so more than the monthly fee with a contract, which is actually fairly good).
Third, bandwidth. Their "High Speed Internet" is "up to" a whopping... three megabits. Their "High Speed Internet Enhanced" goes all the way up to seven.
Which is odd, I think, for a fiber connection right in the city, especially when way out here in the country (fifteen minutes from civilization (aka the nearest Wal-Mart)) I get 25mbps (supposed to be 20, but it tends to go *above* what they claim), which would be soon be increasing to 40.
And annoyingly, "their" "sales" "representative" kept going on about it as though it was actually a pretty fast connection. But that's just what they do, I guess.

Ah yes, "decent business practices", a way of running a business that treats your customer like a human being instead of a money printer.
We have dismissed that claim.
ISPs are the biggest assholes
Maybe when google fiber goes widespread they'll actually start caring about the quality of their service, when it actually means a risk of losing customers.
How can I stop my brother from torrenting? I have threatened to block his internet access because I own the modem/router, problem is when I do block him he annoys the hell out of me till I give it back.
Too bad you can't just block any torrent related traffic.
[editline]23rd August 2012[/editline]
Suppose I could just write something to autoclose uTorrent whenever he opens it, sneak it on when he isn't looking.
[editline]23rd August 2012[/editline]
Would anyone mind getting me the process name for uTorrent? Just through task manager.
I don't have it installed and I'm not going to download it onto my work laptop.
Figure out where he goes to get his torrents.
Then on the router, change the DNS settings so that all those domains point to 107.21.243.42
If you're curious, 107.21.243.42 points to the server running the domain "megaupload.com", so when he goes to those sites, he's greeted with this friendly anti-piracy notice
You are a genius, thank you.
But if that fails his computer is going to blue screen whenever he opens uTorrent.
that is fantastic

Win/Win!

The process name for utorrent is usually utorrent.exe
All he has to do in order to bypass a script is rename it though.
If you have a router that supports DD-WRT, there's an option to catch and block all P2P protocols (don't know if encryption by utorrent could bypass this or not).
You can also block URLs and keywords:

Turns out I don't have a router that supports DNS redirection or DD-WRT unfortunately, has a thousand other features that no one needs though.

He won't figure that out and he will never figure out which process to end.

You could just install some nannyproxy thing and maybe add some redirects in hosts
Yeah, I'll redirect sites in the hosts file.

Set deny permissions for his user account in case he figures that out.

$10 says microsoft hotfixes it eventually

Better fucking not.
Would someone mind uploading that zip archive to a site that I don't have to register for?

This isn't something MS cares about. People has been modifying Windows system files since the dawn of time. The worst thing that might happen when using mods like this would be certain updates won't install in the future if they updates these files. This shouldn't be that big of a issue if you backed up the original files.

Normally I'd agree with you but Microsoft have been real asscunts about this shit with Windows 8. I'm not sure I'd trust them with this.
I don't mind the start menu all that much, I'm used to it now. It's the ugly transition between the metro crap on the right of the screen and aero.
Wish they would just remove that whole side bar thing unless you were in a metro app or the start menu.

Have they? I remember that there were talk about them removing files that were required for removing the new start screen, but as far I know, that was simply just bad journalism and they did nothing of the sort.

I hate this computer.
Enjoying the feel of pagefile swapping?
My pagefile is 512MB. I hate having a pagefile.
Well, I just bought a new modem/router. Before I was getting 2-3mbps download, now I get 11.43mbps.
Not bad at all.
Where do i get the latest Windows 8? Planning to slam it on my new workshop PC.

Technet or MSDN.
Ask Geel9, he probably has an account.
(I'm so sorry I couldn't help myself)
Yeah let's all only read the first post and jump on the bandwagon and the people who oppose euthanasia (who I am not) are retards anyway.
I'm slightly annoyed by the size of the title, but meh, at least it gets the attention it needs now.
Yes, especially considering it leaves out all the parts where I actually explained my position, but apparently anyone that in some way opposes euthanasia on FP is immediately lobbied against.
But yeah, the size is annoying.
Seems to me like someone is trying to win an absurd debate by trying to ridicule their opponent outside the thread.
Sorry, you need to Log In to post a reply to this thread.
