I've seen Java used in online banking (to provide crypto functions etc.), at least Nordea uses some Java applet thing they've made. I'm not a customer of theirs, but I've seen a guy log in to the service. And we all know how bloody slow large corporations, especially banks, are when it comes to transitioning to new technologies.
Using Java to increase security? Hahahaha
Using Java to increase security? Hahahaha
It's widely deployed, it's cross-platform, and it does its job. Choo choo, here comes the clue train, hop on.
There's more to life than "it does the job."
Explain why Java would be a bad choice for this task.
That sounds about right. Just go with whatever Google is pushing for and call it a day :v:
I say, since everyone's pushing for different formats and websites are torn between them, the W3C should require ALL of the formats to be supported.
Explain why Java would be a bad choice for this task.
I was merely pointing out the irony in using a notoriously insecure platform to create a security system, that's all. I could set up an open WiFi AP in a populous area to offer free connectivity and it'd "do the job" too - so long as I'm not watching the traffic for unencrypted credentials to pass through. Edit: the point your head
I was merely pointing out the irony in using a notoriously insecure platform to create a security system, that's all.
Yeah, sure, everything is unsecure when you just run everything you see. If you're browsing the net, and allowing your browser to load every Java applet in existence, that's your fault. If your browser doesn't support denying that, either install an addon that does that, or upgrade to a better browser (Chrome). Running every applet you see is exactly the same as downloading a virus and then running it, the only difference is that the first one can be used to get the whole anti-Java circlejerk going with no good justification.

And I'm not just joining the circlejerk, I have my own reasons for hating Java.. I had to waste almost 3 hours at work on Friday troubleshooting botched installations and getting the correct (old) versions running properly in modern browsers (except Firefox because FX simply refuses to run really old Java runtimes no matter what you do) just so some employees could use our horribly ancient Oracle software. I'm not sure what these guys did to screw things up, but I finally managed to get it working in Chrome on one person's computer and IE on the other, with the help of countless pages of Google and some third party tools developed specifically for clearing up Java installs gone to hell. My time would've been much better spent finishing up a new, updated .wim for deployment.
Yeah, the big problem I've noticed with Java is that it's unbelievable easy to fuck up when it comes to version compatibility, not sure why, hell, it's supposed to be the same thing on the VM side no matter what version you have, all the updates should technically just be minor tweaks that boost performance or help in some other way, but no, let's just randomly break. I have no idea how large Java projects get around that, I don't know if you can like package Java with your program during install and just run your program in your own installation of Java.
So I need an IDE to SATA adapter. Building a computer with a friend and somehow we got an IDE optical drive. The motherboard doesn't have an IDE port... help. I can't find anything decent. Also vote in the poll, damnit.

Might be cheaper to just get a SATA DVD drive, rather than try to find a converter. Failing that, I don't think actual adapters exist - the conversion is too involved for just a passive adapter or cable. See how much a small PCI or PCIe IDE card is - that might be a workable option. [editline]2nd September 2012[/editline] Anyways, I did some work on Project Horizon this weekend. Got it mostly caught up on CPUs and video cards (still need some mobile GPUs), and did a bit of sprite work. On the downside, I realized that I'm massively behind on hard drives. Seriously, I don't think I've updated those since terabyte drives first started coming out. I think I kept putting it off because trying to get product lists out of hard drive manufacturers is nearly impossible.
a SATA DVD drive is about $20 tops, don't bother with ide anymore, it's 2012
Does anyone here actually own a Bitfenix Prodigy? The height they have listed on their website is 404mm, which is only 21mm (0.82 inches for you amercians) less than my current Cooler Master Elite 330, which fits a full-atx motherboard. It's also 61mm (2.4 inches) wider than my current case, which would be understandable if it weren't as tall. It's a beautiful case, though I just don't see the point if it's barely any smaller than a regular mid-tower.
The height comes from the huge ass handles
I was really close to buying a Bitfenix Prodigy, though I looked up the height and pulled out a measuring tape. It's almost as tall as my current mid-tower case... No thanks.
Try a CoolerMaster Elite 120, I think they're like half the height, and they're targeted at the same market. Reportedly they're quite good. Might try and revive that old Loungeroom PC Gaming Thread when the Steam Big Picture beta begins this month... [editline]3rd September 2012[/editline] Yeah, 207~mm~ compared to 404~mm~, definitely way smaller and it still fits long graphics cards and all your typical gaming shit.

[t]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/5636656/jklhjkl.png[/t] I feel ghetto, I don't really care what it looks like anyway, it's minimised 99% of the time until I want a specific song on since I can can skip tracks from my keyboard.
